I retooled a clever thread title over on NeoGaf for this.
Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed Goldeneye 007. While it could have turned out to be just a cheap cash in
on nostalgia factor for a 13 year old game based on a 15 year old James Bond movie it wasn't. Instead it was instead a truly AAA game on a system that while giving shooter fans a controller much closer to mouselook, didn't have many
shooters. It controlled well, supported Gamecube, and classic controller gamepads for those who prefered analog sticks over pointer look. It had a very entertaining single player campaign, borrowing some CoD conventions, as well as classic RARE N64 conventions. Four player splitscreen was, and is fun. Online play was a fun meshing of old school arena shooting with CoD weapon grinding. It isn't perfect (Split screen blocks off some of the maps, Online spawn points sometimes suck), but it still remains a lot of fun, it reviewed well, and sold pretty well.
It came out around the same time as the Wii version of Black Ops, and Red Steel 2, and managed to outdo RS2 by a landslide, and not doing too bad against BO.
Which brings us to Goldeneye Reloaded. If you haven't heard by now (Admittedly it was pretty low key even on mainstream gaming sites) Activision decided the game would get some sales on the other two systems. It doesn't surprise me they would do this as even their previous Bond games (With the exception of Blood Stone) have been on everything.
What does surprise me is that they want to release it up against not only their own Call of Duty title (MW3) but against Battlefield 3, RAGE, Crysis (another port), Resistance 3 (Still plenty that may get it for Xmas), Payday, and while not an FPS per se, Uncharted 3.
It just seems suicidal to release it now on the other two consoles, instead of holding on until a lull like say February. This worked better for Sega when they put out Conduit 2 on Wii, in a month where there wasn't much else to go up against, and that game sold pretty well considering.
As for the game itself, like I said it's an awesome game so those who haven't played it who do now will be pleasantly surprised. Graphically, it's pretty similar just with higher resolutions, and better effects. When you really analyze the screens you'll see the geometry isn't amped up much. What DOES look to be much better is the online play (Netcode looks improved, it looks like there may be private games), and the local multiplayer options. They also promise a couple of exclusive levels. The only bad thing I've heard perusing through the Gaf forums is that the PS3 Move wand isn't as accurate as the Wiimote at all. They've said the same thing about the HOTDOK rerelease, and the No More Heroes rerelease. So PS3 owners will probably want to go with a gamepad if this is true.
Anyway those are my thoughts. Anybody else been eyeing this port?
