It is difficult to say if the upcoming Keanu Reeves film 47 Ronin is going to be any good or not. On the one hand it is based off one of the most popular Japanese tales of all time which itself is based upon real life events. That being said this version of the story is going for a decidedly fantastical approach with monsters and magic being in the forefront and Reeves role of a half-Japanese/half-British warrior being invented specifically for the film.
The trailers show some promise but also hints at a film that could decidedly collapse in on the weight of itself if handled incorrectly. If the CGI is used well and if the fight scenes were filmed in a way that is actually possible to tell what is going on then we might have a fun action romp on our hands. The fact that the film has been slated for the prime Christmas slot instead of say February or even worse January is also a potentially hopeful sign but less so is the fact that 47 Ronin was originally suppose to come out in November 2012.
All in all it makes for a film I am completely up on the air about and will have to reserve judgement on until I see it. However the same is not true for the upcoming Infinity Blade III tie-in to the film that will go live this Friday. That is because Infinity Blade III is a true masterpiece of a title that stands as one of the best mobile games ever released and frankly anything the developers at ChAIR have up their sleeves for it should be excellent.
The fact that it is a ClashMob (which are events where players game-wide fight against a giant monstrous foe with each victory draining a bit of its overall life bar) featuring a monster from the film sounds especially inspired. Whether the film is terrific or a bomb it at least has some fun creature designs and the one picked for the event looks to be a good fit within the overall IB3 aesthetic. If players can defeat the Samurai Brute they will win for themselves a copy of the mystic sword old Ted Theodore Logan himself wields in the film. Check out a trailer for the event below.
Infinity Blade III is out now for iOS and the 47 Ronin tie-in event begins on December 13. 47 Ronin will arrive in theaters on December 25.
