Take on the role of a skinless boy who must save his girlfriend Band-Aid Girl from the evil Dr. Fetus!

While it may seem strange to highlight Super Meat Boy on a list of Xbox games, given the rather big fallout between Team Meat and Microsoft, it is still very much a must-have game for your Xbox 360. Not only is the Xbox 360 the only video game console that has the ridiculously fun, bloody platformer (as well as the best controller for the experience), but it is one of the games that helped make the XBLA service become a force to be reckoned with. While games like Castle Crashers helped give XBLA some early games for everyone to play, Super Meat Boy was a game-changer when it came out and still holds up as an excellent platformer to this day.

The reason for this is three-fold. First, the game’s smooth controls, solid design, and ease to learn makes the game easy to pick up and puts any of the blame for your deaths on your abilities. Second, the game has a crude sense of humor that will have you feeling a mix of shame and morbid delight as you watch Dr. Fetus lay a smackdown on Bandage Girl or watch Meatboy engage in some implied infanticide (that is actually just some amateur plastic surgery). Third, the game is an awesome celebration of gaming, whether it’s blatant references during cutscenes, the shoryukens and scorpion spears Dr. Fetus uses on Bandage girl, or even the creatively themed warp zone levels which pay tribute to older games and gaming systems, as well as a whole host of indie games.

The indie aspect is one of the biggest pulls for me when it comes to Super Meat Boy. While the original Meat Boy game on Newgrounds had a few cameos by characters from other indie games, Super Meat Boy went insane with cameos from popular and lesser-known indie games that were complete with bombastic cutscenes. This game has characters from Jumper, Bit.Trip Saga, Mighty Jill Off, Alien Hominid, Gish, Spelunky, I Wanna Be the Guy, Aquaria, Runman, and a host of other awesome games that many players who played Super Meat Boy would have never even known of (Tofu Boy, the game PETA made to attack Meat Boy, has its titular character make an appearance). Super Meat Boy is not only an awesome game with some very memorable levels and bosses, but it is also a celebration of the more colorful titles of the indie scene.

Not to mention, regardless of which version you pick up, there’s plenty to do and enjoy. In addition to the two worlds you have to go through (which can be flipped between at any time), you can also unlock “Teh Internets” on the 360 version, which unlocks a bevy of additional levels, or play player created levels on the PC, Mac, and Linux. Then there’s the awesome soundtrack by Danny Baranowsky, which is a wonderful score that is both reminiscent of older platforming games while also creating its own amazingly catchy sound. Needless to say, if you haven’t played Super Meat Boy yet, you need to get this game right now.

Soooooo.. the games on these lists don’t actually have to be be an exclusive title but can just be played on the system o.O? I thought the point of these 25-in-25 lists were to highlight games that were really made for the system in question. Taking Journey for example, that was a game made specifically for the PS3 with only that platform in mind (so far as I’m aware) and Super Meat Boy was, well, not. If fact if I remember correctly Team Meat had talked to Sony about putting the game on the PS3 but in a boneheaded move on Sony’s part, they said no (Sony, I love ya, but you guys reeeeaaaally dropped the ball on that one >_> ).
But do you see my point here? When the “PS5″ comes around and you guys make a 25-in-25 of the PS4 will you guys be including The Binding of Isaac Rebirth? Or on the Vita’s 25-in-25? Even though Isaac is a FANTASTIC game, I wouldn’t include it on a PS4/Vita 25-in-25 because, despite being a great game on the plat form in question, it wasn’t really made with a single platform in mind.

Microsoft paid for the development of Super Meat Boy. It would not exist (at least in the form we know and love) without Microsoft Studios and their indie publishing program. The same is true of Mark of the Ninja, Fez, and other games that we will be including over the coming days.

They may not be exclusive anymore, but they were made possible by the Xbox 360.

Oh really? I wasn’t aware MS had put money behind these projects, makes more sense to include them now.
