The Xbox Live Indie Game service has mostly been overlooked on this list and that’s a real shame. True, it’s full of stolen games, “sexy” games that are no more titillating than a trip through the underwear aisle at Walmart, and tons upon metric tons of Minecraft clones, but it was also the home to a number of excellent titles like the Decay series, Paper Knight RPG, Zeboyd games’ early works (including Breath of Death VII and the previously covered Cthulu Saves the World), Epic Quest, Evil Quest, Protect Me Knight, Rainbow Runner, Shoot 1-Up, and the works of James Silva. Now James Silva has worked on a number of excellent games, including the Dishwasher series, but today we’re talking about his most popular work: I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MBIES 1N IT!!!1.
I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MBIES 1N IT!!!1 is a very fun twin-stick shooter that up to four people can play. The game has a wide variety of weapons and enemies for you to take on….
Oh, who am I kidding? While the gameplay is excellent, what really takes this game up to 11 is the song, which is sung and performed by none other than Silva himself:
Did you hear that? Silva just introduced you to the game and welcomed you to play it (“Welcome to my game”), explained the concept (“They come shambling out from the sides / you better shoot them, or you’re gonna die), and even took time to tell you how he made the game and his policy towards DRM (“I made this game using XNA, it cost a dollar and I hoped you paid”). And he did it with all of the enthusiasm of a crowd of NASCAR fans who just got to watch a twelve-car crash while finding out that their Ghostbuster Scratchers tickets were all winners. Mr. Silva sounds desperate to tell you about the game he made and all of the zombies he put in it. It’s as though the man is in some kind of fight to the death with an intangible enemy and the only way to banish it is to rock it to death with a song about the game he made. The only good comparison I can even think of is a memory of my childhood where a man, who was completely ripped on several chemicals the police are still trying to identify, stole away the grocery’s PA microphone and went on a rant about Lizard People and cubes for five minutes.
This intense and completely ridiculous song is supplemented by the visuals. While the game starts on a plain field with zombies shambling towards you, it slowly turns into a checkerboard, a cloudy environment, and then into a complete rave as the game’s code falls apart and every enemy appears at once while every strobe and laser effect goes off and the background starts flashing with messages about how the game is pissed off at you succeeding against waves of enemies, all while Silva breaks in with a second verse that sounds like he is getting over a hangover caused by ingesting fifteen energy shots and is still desperate to get you pumped up. The entire experience is an amazing trip and it is impossible to replicate it.
This is a game you need to play.
Before we go, here’s the funny thing about I MAED A GAM3 W1TH Z0MBIES 1N IT!!!1: Silva made it as a joke. He did it completely by himself with the simple thought that he wanted to make a $1 game that was worth the price. He loaded it up with tongue-cheek references to leetspeak and common typos. He wasn’t expecting it to be a success at all and it became one of the best selling games on XBLIG, selling over 350,000 copies and winning multiple awards. Life’s funny sometimes, huh?
