Big (if expected) Kingdom Hearts news was revealed earlier tonight at the Japanese D23 Expo and its all I can do to restrain my squees. And if you are even a remote Kingdom Hearts fan chances are before the end of this story you will be doing the same. That is because Square Enix has officially announced that Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX is indeed happening and set to be release sometime next year. Again not a surprise (especially if you ever viewed the credits for Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 ReMIX) but still official confirmation of the title is welcome all the same.
Especially since it was also confirmed exactly which games would be included in the 2.5 ReMIX, namely Kingdom Hearts II and Kingdom Hearts: Birth By Sleep. Not only are these the two best titles in the entire series to date, but as with Kingdom Hearts in 1.5 ReMIXthe versions of these games being included in the collection are the FINAL MIX editions. Among other things this means for Kingdom Hearts II a new difficulty setting, a new dive form dubbed Limit Form and a new mini-game which charges players with collecting jigsaw pieces and solving these puzzles in exchange for rare items. Also included is a variety of new cutscenes and a good number of new boss battles including the previously cutscene-only Sora/Roxas fight and the Cavern of Remembrance where charged-up versions of defeated members of Organization XIII (including those from Chain of Memories) can be battled.
Meanwhile the FINAL MIXversion of Birth also includes a new difficulty mode and new cutscenes but that is just the beginning. Also added to this version of what was already in my opinion the best KH title to date are a wide variety of new Keyblades, several new attack commands and command styles, a new command board, a new dimension link and four new boss battles. Most exciting of all is a new playable epilogue titled “A fragmentary passage” set in the series infamous Realm of Darkness. Just to reiterate all of this is content has never been officially available outside of Japan before and comes on top of the expected sharpened and enhanced visuals as well.
Also to be included in 2.5 ReMIX are the cutscenes from the Kingdom Hearts: Re:coded which we will simply have to agree not to hold against the collection. I am kidding, I am kidding. Except I am totally not kidding. Also this would appear to officially put the kibosh on the hopes of some that 2.5 ReMIX might include the cutscenes from Kingdom Hearts: Dream Drop Distance as well. So if you want to get caught on some major developments and reveals in the ongoing KH saga before the release of Kingdom Hearts III it seems you will simply have to buy a 3DS after all. Check out the debut trailer for 2.5 ReMIX below.
Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 ReMIX has been officially confirmed for release in North America and Europe sometime in 2014 and will be a PS3 exclusive.
