Warner Bros. Interactive just released the launch trailer for Batman: Arkham Origins. For most of you, that’s all you need to know. Watch it and get excited. For anyone interesting in the inner workings of the game industry, there is a bit more news to talk about.
Specifically, there is a minor press SNAFU going on with the game. Game journalists from Polygon’s Justin McElroy to Destructoid’s Jim Sterling are reporting that early review copies were withheld from their outlets, with WB PR representatives even going so far as to lie about the availability of press units. Some sites (like IGN and Game Informer) will certainly have reviews on launch day, but it appears that large swaths of the game review community will not.
I often say that you can tell how good a game is going to be by how early publishers are willing to let us get our hands on them. Nintendo sent over Fire Emblem: Awakening a month early, while SEGA didn’t ship Aliens: Colonial Marines until the day before launch. Completely cutting out high profile media from your AAA release is probably a very bad sign, but feel free to draw your own conclusions. Maybe the first non-Rocksteady Arkham title is fine and this is entirely a publishing mix-up. We will let you know our opinion of the game as soon as possible.
Batman: Arkham Origins arrives for Xbox 360, PS3, Wii U, and PC on October 25th.
