New Main Character YES! Kratos is so boring. “I want revenge, revenge, revenge, REVENGE.” Thats all there is to his character. I acualy end up cheering for the things fighting against him, because I want to see him get his emo ass kicked.

Now what I want to see, is a new story with somone taking revenge against Kratos! Because Kratos is an ass who destroyes so may lives in his blind rampage for revenge. I want somone to rise up and kick his sorry, pathetic, self centered and drama queen ass.

Now that is a game Id pay money for.

I don’t get why God of War needed any sequels/prequels at all. God of War 1 was a very complete story, covering Kratos’ past and ending with him watching over all warfare through to modern times. The sequels had to blatantly contradict that last part just to continue the series.

I’ve played the first two games and Chains of Olympus. Lame to hear Kratos’ last outing for the PS3 is coming off as a disappointment. But I admittedly kind of thought this game was unnecessary. Turns out I was right; the camera just looks abysmal at times and it sounds like not much of anything helped move this series forward, even the multiplayer didn’t do all that much and it was a new feature.

I’ll just spend my cash on the third game at some point, thank you very much.

I say reboot the series for the PS4. Maybe with different angles and stories while keeping the quest for vengeance still an integral part of the story. If done right it could be the breathe of fresh air this franchise needs.

That’s a terrible idea. If the Devil May Cry reboot is anything to go by in terms of fan reception. A GoW reboot would be a terrible move. There is no need to “reinvent” the GoW story and show different angles. There is nothing else to the story that really needs to shown. Or rather nothing people would care about or wouldn’t detract from what made GoW popular in the first place. And even if the gameplay was good people still wouldn’t like for being a reboot.

Personally I say let GoW die. Its had its run, but its over even with the stupid cliff hanger of 3. Even if they were to make an entry after 3. What would be the plot? The games Universe is basically Ancient Greece is the world so other deities for Kratos to fight is out of the question. And any deities left from Kratos campaign are not worth his time. So its time the series hung up its blades and Santa Monica start working on a new IP for the PS4.

You have a very valid point, Xikar. The problem with having a definitive story – one in which you have a definite ending – is that you really can’t add more to the story without contradicting it. But you can’t just reboot and start another one, not while the original is still fresh in people’s minds. It’s something Marvel should have learned with Spider-Man.

If anything, they should just let the series lie fallow for a few years, let people settle into the new console generation, and wait for interest in the character and setting start to rise again. Either rebooting or forcing a continuation of Kratos’ story is going to hurt the fandom.

“New main character. New pantheon :)

That’s what I’ve been hoping for. The draw of God of War has never, ever been Kratos or his story, at least from where I’m sitting, only the gameplay and the fact that you get to fight mythological creatures and gods. After God of War 3 very definitively ended Kratos and his story, I figured the next game would be the perfect time for it to move on from him, and preferably to a new mythology as well. The fact that Ascension is instead a prequel is honestly the main reason I haven’t picked it up.

And at this point, I don’t think I will. To get me to buy this one they’d have to offer some improvements to combat that make it worth playing over the previous entries, and it looks like they’ve done the opposite – especially seeing the example Sage showed of the awful camera zoom-out in combat. I haven’t seen camera problems that bad since Devil May Cry 1, and honestly I’d prefer the sort camera problems DMC1 had to that.

Kinda too late for that. If the idea (at least what you’re possibly presenting) is a new character and a new God of War from a different mythos, its a little late for that. We have 7 games in the series with Kratos and the Greek Pantheon. For them to jump to a set of new characters in the same series would probably be a turn off for a lot of people.

Also there aren’t many other mythos pantheons as well known as the Greek one.

I don’t really think it’s too late for that. Now that the Greek pantheon has been obliterated it would make sense to move on to another one without making a reboot. Hell, they don’t even have to throw Kratos away. It’s very easy to come up with a valid reason to keep the focus on him.

As for what to move on to, the Norse and Egyptian Pantheons are considerably well known too. There’s a reason those were the ones chosen for the Age of Mythology games.

Just another comment on your previous post mentioning DMC, if they did make a reboot, I think they would be smart enough not to completely reinvent the main character, throw away every recognisable part of him and then proceed to openly mock everyone who doesn’t like it.

Agreed on every other count though, a reboot would be a terrible idea. If for no other reason than because the previous one ended in a sorta kinda “sequel hook” if I recall correctly. Have the unidentified figure be from another Pantheon, problem solved.

“For them to jump to a set of new characters in the same series would probably be a turn off for a lot of people.”

Maybe, maybe not. Depends on just what the draw of the series is for everyone. As I said above, for me, it’s definitely not the characters or story, it’s the whole “fighting mythological creatures and gods” part. If that’s the case for many other fans, then jumping to a new main character and pantheon would work quite well, and would allow the series to expand its horizons while staying true to what people like about it.

“Also there aren’t many other mythos pantheons as well known as the Greek one.”

Which would be part of the appeal. Think of all the weird things you could do battle with in a mythology that people are less familiar with. If the Shin Megami Tensei series is any indication, there’s some crazy stuff out there.

“New main character. New pantheon ”

This is EXACTLY what I was hoping for too. I’ve already played two prequels on the PSP. They’re… okay, but they are nothing special, but I’m not interested in shelling out 60 bucks for what amounts to a PSP title inflated up for the PS3. If I were to play the series again, I’ll just go through I, II, III and that’s it. This game, at best, is like that extra bit of fat on the side of a tender steak. It might add a little bit of flavor to things, maybe, but in the end you just cut it off and try to ignore the waste sitting there on your plate.

They had the talent to create God of War, and it’s had its run. But it is done. The developers need to put that talent they had to use in making something new.

Give me a new character involved with the Norse or Egyptian Pantheons… or maybe a more obscure mythology like Celtic or Slavic.

God of War: Ascension Review

Sage Reviews – God of War: Ascension, 8.5 out of 10 based on 28 ratings

I think of Devil May Cry and MGR: Revengeance as the wire fu, over the top martial art action we expect from Asian cinema in gaming form. By the same standard, God of War is the Jean Claude Van Dam 90′s Hollywood blockbuster. Sure, asses still get kicked in roughly the same manner, but the refinement and technicality of Asian flicks are replaced with gore and explosions.

PROS Visual astounding at times, The soundtrack is decent when it works
CONS Combat, Platforming, Story, Full of bugs
WTF?! The Last of Us demo doesn’t unlock until May 30th!

God of War: Ascension is the latest installment to one of Sony’s biggest in-house franchises. With the series well and truly wrapped up with the epic climax that was GOW3, the only way was back. Ascension takes place just after Kratos has slaughtered his own family and come to resent Ares. With his oath to the god of war broken, he finds himself hunted by the 3 furies, which is infinitely better than being hunted by 3 furries.

However, at least being hunted by sexually deviant cosplayers would result in some interesting dialogue and narrative. God of War: Ascension has one of the most lackluster stories ever to grace the PS3 and fails to give the player any reason to get excited at all. It’s hard to feel sorry for a more sympathetic Kratos when he’s still as bloodthirsty as ever. This prelude to future events adds nothing to the GoW mythos and simply serve to link together a series of battles and puzzles in a thinly veiled excuse for a new full price title with the GoW name on it.

Nipple piercing was intense in ancient greece.

This is hardly up to the standard of the previous titles, either. It was going to be a hard enough task to top the splendid master piece that was the intro to GoW3, but Ascension can’t even get the 1080p display of the previous entry, let alone the quality of gameplay.

Battles feel devoid of drama and I am not referring to the many times that the soundtrack will drop out unexpectedly. Your weapons feel ineffectual, with very little recoil effect on enemies, who will respond in kind with severe inescapable combos. Not only can enemies chain off each other before players gain a recovery period, but several enemies in the game have a reach beyond Kratos’ dodge, meaning even if you do get a moment’s reprieve, damage is going to be taken regardless.

Players will often find themselves unable to do anything in battle due to the amount of enemies cluttering the screen on top of the constant harassment. God of War: Ascension feels like a lost battle in which you merely scrape by–very rarely giving you the satisfaction of knowing it was your skill that pulled you through. I found the most effective way of winning battles was to exploit invincibility frames from throws and finishers, which made me feel almost cowardly, but got the job very much done.

Everyone in this series is overcompensating for something.

Aside from the overpowered enemy attacks and combos, problems arise in combat from Kratos’ new array of power-ups. Rather than gaining new weapons, this time out the lovable blood-soaked Spartan can change his blades to use one of 4 elements that can be changed on the fly with the D-pad. These include Fire, Ice, Lightning, and Soul. Each has its own distinct advantage, be it extra damage, stun, or block-breaking abilities. Combine this with a new rage bar that opens up new combos when filled, but loses power when hit, and you have a recipe for disaster.

Take the ice power, for example. I found myself relying on it more than any other ability, as it seemed to cause knockback more often. Every 4 hits with the standard light attack would stagger an opponent, often keeping them locked in a perpetual stumble. However, if I hit them enough to build the rage bar until the combo extended, it lost its kick after 4 hits and left me open to attack. By succeeding, the game rewarded me with less effective weaponry.

I could go on about the combat. I could point out the ridiculous new enemy designs that rehash the 4 elemental powers previously mentioned, or the fact that only half of the creatures in the game seem to be recognizable mythological creatures, but I won’t. Perhaps I could get into the topic of the underwhelming new circle attack that allows you to utilize a series of weapons scattered throughout the game to such little effect that the button becomes superfluous. But we have to move on, because there is so much more to complain about.

It’s like the single-player, except… multiplayer.

You see, if God of War: Ascension has a redeeming feature, it’s the visuals. At times, it is the best looking game on PS3. From particle effects to the architectural design, the developers have honestly outdone themselves in crafting one of the richest worlds to have been created in the medium. This is all fine, but Ascension suffers from vanity.

GoW: Ascension will sacrifice gameplay in order to show you the beauty of your surroundings. I recently purchased a 47″ HDTV with all the trimmings and several times in this game I found myself unable to see my character. I’m not talking about sequences in which you walk up some steps to a panning shot; I’m talking about the middle of fights. Be it the middle of a battle or the crucial moment in a platforming section, the camera will draw itself out to show you the full glory that is ancient Greece. More than once I was treated to the game over screen due to these perspective changes, and I would see that screen many more times for a multitude of reasons–next to none of them my due to my own error.

Level design and interactivity in God of War: Ascension is almost criminal. Don’t misunderstand me; the levels in and of themselves are more than suitable, if a little called in–it’s the way they work. Often I found myself double jumping at ledges only to find Kratos has lost the ability to grab them. Several times I would swing on an interactive point only to fall to my death as the next point hadn’t activated yet. Even when led on a linear path, I often found myself falling to my death without any options available to me. On most of these, a second play-through would reveal that the platform I was meant to land on simply had not appeared the first time. The term frustrating simply didn’t sum up my feelings.

3/10

Sigh… it’s sad to need to explain how critics work: You find one that has a similar or opposite taste as you based on previous reviews and use that opinion to decide if you’re going to buy the game or not.

And if you think that one reviewer on BT has the power to damage triple-A games i think you need to get a new perspective on gaming journalism in general.

But according to this, I should instead just forget this game existed and just enjoy the first one. So I guess I can think this game for existing to give me the first game in the series for free?

When I heard that they replaced Kratos’s long time German dubbing artist Tilo Schmitz (who voiced him in all 5 previous GoW games) for this, I knew something had to be wrong about it.

Still…isn’t it a bit too harsh?

I haven’t played it yet, but even the weakest GoW game (Chains of Olympus) stayed true to the formula.

Honestly, I’ve dwelled on my decision, wondering if it was too harsh. Ultimately though, I found playing the game a chore regardless of the errors and bugs I found.

As I’ve previously stated, perhaps the game could have worked its way up to a 5, but with constant unfair deaths caused from combat and platforming sections, I couldn’t give it the benefit of the doubt, especially when the save breaking error occurred. I can only judge my own experience.

If you do get round to playing the game, I hope you have more fun with it, but the mountain snake section alone gives me cold shivers when I think back on those gloriously beautiful vista’s that tormented me so..

Even from that 30minute gameplay trailer they had a few weeks ago I knew this was gonna be awful. GoW has always been the lowest tier of character action to begin with they did nothing to refine it. Instead they pulled the camera WAY back to show off the scenery so it looked like ants fighting. Though I never would have guessed it would have gamebreaker bugs.

Is this franchise fatigue? Cause the game is still damn good. Not to GOW3 levels, sure, but a 3/10?
Playing it and it’s as good as a game in the series should be.

If it has glitches that prevent the game’s save from even loading then they’re damn lucky that they had a relatively lenient reviewer. I would have given it a 1/10.

        Well that’s unusual…
Must’ve been in the review copy.
But like I said, it’s still a good game

So not very good at all then?

I liked the first God of War in certain ways but I really couldn’t find it in me to even pick up 2 or 3. The games are not that great, even as simple hack and slashers the God of War games are pretty boring.

A lot of people would disagree with you on that, especially on 3.
        But hey, everybody has preferences.

I’m not totally against them, I think it was when I saw some of 2 and how they just repeat everything from 1 that I knew it wasn’t for me.

I will play them one day. One day when I get them really super cheap. XP

Glad to see I’m not the only one who hates this game. As I was playing I was sitting there completely shocked and almost at a loss for word at how terrible this game is. You didn’t even touch on half the problems of the combat, as you said we would be here forever if you did but I want get these off my chest. You said the filled Ragemeter gives you more moves, that is not entirely true, it gives you an expanded moveset yes but all of them are moves that you were able to do in the previous games with no restriction, the Ragemeter doesn’t add anything it takes things away and only gives them to you when you fill it. Also this new mechanic was basically there to force the player to play more defensively and with a bit more skill rather than the little buttonmashy predecessors, in theory that is not a bad idea at all but they didn’t change the controls to make it work properly, dodging is still done with the right analog stick and now that you have to use all the time, or else your Ragemeter depletes, it shows how incredibely unintuitive this is. And it’s not that this is hard to change, hold L1 to block and when you move the left analog stick instead of normaly moving you dodge, not that hard. And lastly the elemental powers, I can see what they were doing here but my biggest problem here is the point where you unlock the magic spell for them, that is when you upgrade it to maximum, the only time you have any kind of variety in this game is when you completely maximize your powers, anything below makes you feel like a clumsy little idiot, good thing you don’t have to see that because the camera is pulled so far back most of the time so that you have no idea what you’re doing. Bottom line, this game sucks.

After seeing this review I just had to keep out what was being said about this game in other sites and I can say I’m ratter unsurprised in what I saw on youtube there are alot of fans that can’t comprehend the possibility of a bad God of War game.

I guess I saw this coming at some point just not as fast as it did, not the fans, the game, I only played the console titles and after GoW2 I can see a drop in quality between 2 and 3.

You know, I use to be a total fan boy of the series it was with the first two games, the more I saw Kratos face everywhere the less enthusiastic I was about the third game I can’t put my finger on but I guess I’d say I could tell after 2 the games didn’t have the same… passion?

I knew this would be crap after playing the “enhanced” demo filled with retarded video’s and ads for Vikings. The combat in the demo was terrible. I’ll stick with GoW 1-3. $60 saved.

What was it Frasier said at the start of his VGA Let’s Play? He was surprised it came out so soon? Now I see why.

Now that is a fall from grace if I ever saw one. Though, that’s only this review.

    *Checks other reviews*

… Or it could just be the Halo 4 review all over again. Perfectly acceptable reviews, mind, just far from the norm.

I was originally aiming at a 4 with the hopes of seeing it rise to a 5, but with the glitch that required me to restart the game, it could only sink lower.

Let’s hope this isn’t the Halo 4 review, I’m not sure I could take the legions of N4G questioning my standards, abilities and sexuality again! :)

I’m now kinda worried about Sony (in terms of the playstation brand anyway). I have my doubts about Second Son (stupid hipster hero) and Killzone (Face it, it was never that great. I remember when the first game, the “Halo killer” came out to middling reviews). Insomniac and Fumito Ueda has moved on… What do they have left? Soul Sacrifice? Parappa the Rapper?

Sly Cooper tracked as the ninth best selling game of the month in America, granted that’s less than Aliens Colonial Marines (UGH) and Just Dance 4 (DOUBLE UGH) But, it’s not bad for being a Sony Exclusive, every other game in the top 10 is on multiple formats.

Also, Naughty Dog still seems to be working with just Sony, and that’s a major point for them.

That said though, everything is going to get shaked up this Fall in the games community, supposably 2 new consoles launching, moving into a new generation. Going to be a little insane.

I have almost no doubt the GOW team are more than capable of making a great game, even if they do choose not to start a new IP. They have produced 3 superb titles in a fantastic trilogy. It seems they simply tried some new things with this instalment and failed to refine the game to the same quality standard we have come to expect.

I would worry little over Sony’s in house development. Remember, Sucker Punch, Insomniac and Naught Dog have all come on leaps and bounds this generation.

While you may ultimately be proven correct, Infamous Second Son’s character design doesn’t exclude the possibility the the game will be good.

My concern is really for Microsoft who really only have Forza and Halo to rely upon as definite sales. Lion Head have lost Peter Molyneux and Epic have lost Cliff Bleszinski, leaving both Fable and Gears of War in new hands. This could either be very very good or disastrous. I wouldn’t be surprised to see Gears handed off to a new dev in the same manner as Halo, with Epic games wanting to focus on a multi format title in this harsh economic climate. We rarely see 3rd party exclusives these days and MS simply don’t have the in house studios that Sony have right now.

I hope that MS bring their A game this E3 and destroy all my fears, as ultimately I’m a gamer and every company competing means better games for all.
