I think as a kid I first got Tyrian from my dad’s workplace sneaker-net (aah, piracy in the days of floppies)… for a long time I lived and breathed this game. And, yes – the dame’s Data Cubes do explain what’s going on – mostly. Things start getting weird(er) after the first act.

“And so far I have not seen a shmup that has used a similar system…” If you haven’t already – I highly recommend “Jets ‘n’ Guns”(gold), the developers were heavily inspired by Tyrian. Personally, I do not find it /quite/ as fun – but that may be the nostalgia goggles talking, I grew up with Tyrian and remember it fondly. (If you couldn’t already tell from my screen name/avatar… :D )

Hell Yeah! I had a similar experience with Tyrian 2000, myself, and I definitely still love the game today! It’s really the upgrade system that does it for me. So much variety!

And Tilly’s mention of Raptor: Call of the Shadows also needs a second! I got that game in the exact same way you got Tyrian: a demo disc, which I picked up at a swap meet back in like, ’96. I remember that they gave it to my Dad as part of a promotion for a brand new technology: 2x CD-ROM drives! Twice as fast as regular CD-ROM drives!

God that game was awesome! And it looks like GOG.com has a version I’ve never played… I know what I’ll be doing this weekend!

Dude, if you love Tyrian THAT much, then you MUST (and I repeat, you MUST!) try a little known title, called JETS’N'GUNS.

JETS’N'GUNS is basically a modern version of TYRIAN on illegal STEROIDS.

    Awesome artwork? Check
    Awesome soundtrack? SO FUCKING CHECK’d
Shop upgrade system? Check (with some items that WILL make you lose your shit)
    Wacky humor? Check
Hectic levels, with bullets covering 3/4rds of the screen? Here you go, enjoy your pain

Seriously man, your nostalgia levels will cause you diabetes

P.S: You want the GOLD version, it’s extended in features, and lenght (just like tyrian 2k)

I knew the name of the game sounded familiar but I did not know why until you mention GOG.com… I have that game siting there on that shelve for years now… time to correct that, Thanks GWolf!

Nice review. There is another Shoot ‘Em Up that features the upgrade system you detailed. It’s called Raptor: Call of the Shadows. It’s incredibly fun, IMO. I also wondered why no other Shoot ‘Em Ups never featured that kind of upgrade system as well.
