MMO Grinder: SMITE, 7.9 out of 10 based on 15 ratings While MOBAs might not be MMOs, the burgeoning genre has had quite a few carbon copy clones of DotA, with very few looking to do their own thing… until now. Enter SMITE, the Battleground of the Gods, where deities of various pantheons head into the field of battle to use their unique powers against each other, in a fully 3D perspective. Does this new take on the DotA formula change all the rules, or are we looking at yet another rehash? Come witness this clash of the titans, and decide for yourself.

ChaosD1

An avid MMO player (not expert. There's a difference) Jon "ChaosD1" Burkhardt is best known for MMO Grinder... Unless you're from TGWTG in which he's that guy who drinks Mountain Dew, collects Jigglypuff items and shows up to scream how things don't work that way in Phelous's videos.

I hope the LoL and DoTA hardcores have their nerd rage fully stocked, because there are a lot more MOBAs coming.

I actually played an even older game using the same moba formula and the same things that you mentioned in smite. LOCO (Land of Chaos Online). While I can’t recall exactly when I played it, it was definitely during my 1st year of university (4 years ago). The game is quite obscure and it does not refer itself as a moba but rather some tactical rts with 3rd person elements or something. Anyways just like smite it had those strong defensive creeps instead of tower near the main building (and sometimes near towers, depending on the map. It had other unique elements at the time that made it different but the game was unpolished, unbalanced and lacked a certain charm. Got really boring after a few days. Glad to see that smite is better.

I love how even the layouts of the maps on the minimaps for each game when you showed screens of three MOBAs were EXACTLY THE SAME. I’m honestly not a big MOBA fan. I don’t like competitve games generally and prefer a game more focused on teamwork. The MOBA community just seems very elitist and full of themselves. They all think they’re superpro MLG gamers for playing what is basically Warcraft 3′s Heroes System.

Another big issue I have with MOBAs is there’s very little replay value to a guy like me. The gameplay is so tightly defined that it basically allows for zero variation in gameplay or map structure or goals in-game. It’s pretty much just run down one of three paths, destroy towers and minions and finally, take out the enemy HQ. It NEVER changes.

Maybe I’ve just played Singleplayer games and RPGs too much, but that feels too restrictive for me to ever consider jumping back in. LoL taught me I hate this genre, and I doubt I’ll ever stop.

Dota like games (MOBA…? Seriously, even Guinsoo admits they made up a term to classify it…) don’t require teamwork or variation…?

      No replay value also…?

      I don’t even know where to begin…

Technically, Super Monday Night Combat did the third-person MOBA first, so the video description isn’t 100% accurate.

That being said, I would say SMITE is the first MOBA to do it in a polished manner.

“You dance like a goddess” “You mean like Neith? F*** you *slap*”

I don’t play MMOs anymore (6 years of FFXI have left me shattered on the ground) but like to stay informed, and you’re doing a great job on that.
