Awwww yeah!

Interesting news for fans of the Legacy of Kain series. Today, Superannuation discovered that Square Enix’s domain registrar registered the domain warfornosgoth.com. Nosgoth, for those not in the know, is the world in which the Legacy of Kain series takes place in.

The Legacy of Kain series possessed one of the more celebrated narratives in gaming history, with a story that was told through two separate series, Blood Omen and Soul Reaver, that were intertwined with the characters Kain and Raziel and their epic adventures across time and space. The story tackled themes of fatalism and the struggle for free will while building these two characters up for their final encounter in Legacy of Kain: Defiance.

So, yeah, we here at Blistered Thumbs are pretty excited. While we don’t know what this domain is being used for, whether it’s a new project or a re-release of the series, it would be noted that Crystal Dynamics worked on a majority of the franchise and they have just finished up work on the newest Tomb Raider game. As a side note, if you want to experience the Legacy of Kain for yourself, there is a sale on many of Square’s properties, including the Legacy of Kain (with the exception of the first Blood Omen) series, going on at GOG this weekend.

So, what are your thoughts? Do you think the world of Nosgoth should be revisited? Share your thoughts in the comments below and keep following blistered thumbs for all the latest gaming news.

I never thought another game would be coming. The last we saw of Kain and Raziel was a joke mode in Lara Croft and the Gaurdian of Light (hilarious by the way). As some have pointed out, everyone involved with the original project is gone. I would be happy with a finale in graphic novel form. A new game would be nice though. If that’s the case I’m hoping NOT for a reboot.

This could be wonderful or terrible.

Everyone who was responsible for the greatness of the LOK narrative has left the company a long time ago. Most notably, Amy Hennig has gone on to craft Uncharted for Naughty Dog.

Also, one of the most recognizable characters of the franchise, Raziel, was in a position at the end of the last game where it would hurt the integrity of the story to bring him back. Another pivotal character, The Elder God, was voiced by incomparable Tony Jay, who has since passed away.

That said, there is a lot of life left in the IP without even touching the main narrative. The storyline literally spans several millenia, with quite a few gaps in which the usual protagonists don’t do anything of import. One could easily weave a grandiose story around a random vampire or vampire hunter.

Something entirely different I could easily see working under this particular title would be a some kind of RTS game set in one of several periods of war and upheaval in the universe. For instance, the Vampire/Hylden war is entirely unexplored.

Please don’t fuck it up, please don’t fuck it up, please don’t fuck it up…

Oh, and bring the old VAs back in. They were the best part of the games.

It’s going to be difficult to bring back the old VA of the Elder God, since Tony Jay has sadly passed away a few years ago.

I struggle to get excited about this. I remember the Legacy of Kain series being a lot of tedious block pushing and lever flipping puzzles with clumsy combat and dodgy platforming. Though I say that having only played Soul Reaver and Blood Omen 1 so perhaps it improved once it made the jump to the PS2. I didn’t find my experiences with the first two entries in the series enjoyable and chose not to follow it any further.

Anyway, this is Square Enix we’re talking about so this is probably going to be an iOS game.

Either that, or it will be in production hell for the next five years, while they crank out more sequels to FFXIII.

Oh no, who’d expect old games to have bad controls.

Considering it was bad even by mid 90s standards and I played then when they launched that’s a pathetic argument to make.

        Your fanboyism is showing Cubey.

If you played those games at launch, perhaps it’s time to replay because you got many facts wrong.

First of all, your complaints (except for combat, which is a YMMV) can be aimed only at Soul Reaver. Blood Omen didn’t even HAVE platforming, it was a top-down view 2d game.

Also, Soul Reaver’s combat, puzzle design and controls may have aged badly but they were PRAISED at the time. Compare with other games that came out around the same time, such as Tomb Raider 2 or 3.

I’d love a new Legacy of Kain game that is the same style as Soul Reaver 1 and 2.
