Holy crap, thanks for this. I totally forgot i have this game and never got to playing it. I should bump it up my to play list. Forgot that Ghibli worked on it.
Im still on the fence about playing Ni no Kuni right now. I got the Wizard edition that they didn’t ship out enough of. Its really rare now so i dont know if i want to open it, or just open a regular retail copy.. i REALLY want the stupid book!
Looking at this game, by comparison to Ni No Kuni, Jade Cocoon looks like an experiment for Ghibli to get into gaming and press enough elements into it: story, characters, premise, etc.
Good digging there Shinkara, you’re getting TOO happy as of late
Its a shame they took out the combine two monsters mechanic in JC 2, and instead made it more fixed… It was a really innovative concept that more games should implement.
I remember this RPG.I borrowed it from a college buddy and beat it in like 3 or 4 hours. I do remember that the setting -largely inspired in East Indies mythos- was pretty well done. All the ruins you explore resemble Nan Madol or Ta Keo.
Honestly, I’ve prefered to see an animated feature from Studio Ghibli set in that world than play a based around the whole monster capture game fad.
While I wouldn’t put Jade Cocoon 2 on my top 10 JRPGs of all time, I did enjoy it. Disappointingly the monster combining mechanic from Jade Cocoon 1 has been replaced. The battle system is quite interesting, and I liked quite a few of the characters in the game(though there still are several annoying ones). I can only think of two real problems I had with the game, and both are fairly minor. I would recommend checking it out if possible.
I played and beat the sequel, and I enjoyed it from what I remembered. It wasn’t the best RPG, but it’s battle system was quite unique. Managing a team of eight monsters in a 3×3 grid (with the player as the heart) was pretty cool, and required some strategy.
It wasn’t the best Jrpg out there at the time but I still enjoyed it. I still have the demo around somewhere. I remember that the game was pretty short compared to some of the other Jrpgs out there at the time.
As for the PSN, we still do not have Suikoden II yet. It is a true shame.
I agree, why not Suikoden 2
I made a Top 10 M.I.A. PSOne classics. That game was #1.
And for a good reason. One of my favorite games of all time. At least we got Suikoden I which i love too, but damnit gimme 2 as well! I have the actual PS1 discs, but i like to play these on my PSP
Thank You!!!!! I’m so glad you mention this video. You are the few I met that have actually played this game. It is great for not just early jrpg on the ps1 but a bit of Studio Ghibli art work. This was a great idea from both company, I understand it was not well known but it had some good ideas.
I have commented before about the sequel on your Ni No Kuni review but it did suck.
Thank you again for reviewing this, it makes many fans feel that our comments are being known.
Absolutely! I make the show for you guys
Otherwise it would just be a 37 Part retrospective on Persona 4
Gotta say, I’d watch that.
You’re a good man, sir.
