Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance Slashes Its Way Onto PC
Because Hideo Kojima heard that Johnny M. played a Metal Gear game.

Platinum makes the best action titles in the industry, but their narratives occasionally leave something to be desired. Meanwhile, Kojima Productions found themselves unable to complete a hack ‘n’ slash Metal Gear spin-off, despite the talents of gaming’s bravest storyteller. But this isn’t a tale of one company saving the other’s failed project. This is a serendipitous fusion of two complementary halves that fit together so well that it’s hard to imagine this wasn’t the plan all along.
Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance isn’t just good–it’s inspired.
| PROS | Style, Substance, Boss fights, Music, Visuals, Humor, Social commentary |
| CONS | Camera |
| WTF?! | Sombrero Raiden. That is all. |
Set after the events of Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots, Revengeance sees the cyborg ninja Raiden in the employ of Maverick Security Consulting, a private military contractor meant to maintain stability and balance through deterrence. All of this changes with the emergence of Desperado Enforcement, a PMC that forces our anti-hero into a quest for both revenge and vengeance (apparently). The plot makes numerous references to Metal Gear lore, but it doesn’t demand prior knowledge. The economical pacing and engaging expository dialogue are perhaps the smoothest yet seen in a Hideo Kojima joint–the gameplay to cutscene ratio has been miraculously restored to a sane level from the bloated excess of the Raiden’s last outing.
As usual, Kojima-san takes the opportunity to tackle heady subjects far beyond the normal boundaries of his chosen genre. Revengeance touches on transhumanism, cultural memetics, American foreign policy, child soldiers, personal freedom, the economics of war, and much more. Of particular note is the way the game handles violence. On one hand, it revels in the blood and gore caused by the player character, also known Jack the Ripper. On the other hand, the software seems keenly aware of its apparent hypocrisy and takes time to address the issue. The experience doesn’t lose its sense of fun as a result, but it does throw a thought-provoking spanner in the works of your expectations.
What makes the social commentary of Metal Gear work is that it doesn’t feel preachy. The characters launch into philosophical monologues on a regular basis, but they are often met with scorn and derision. The ideas are throw onto the screen for the player’s consideration, before being roundly ridiculed by an opposing viewpoint or a clever observation. Unlike more heavy-handed approaches in recent action titles, Revengeance lets players in on its jokes and treats them with a respect for their intelligence.
It also doesn’t hurt that the game is outright hilarious. With a name like “Revengeance,” you have to come into the adventure with certain expectations of ridiculous camp value, and that bar is cleared with flying colors. I won’t spoil any of the glorious highlights for you, but let it be said that I haven’t yelled at my television in elated disbelief this much since I kicked God into the sun in Bayonetta (coincidentally, also a Platinum Games product). The game also continues the Metal Gear Solid legacy of clever sight gags and wordplay, whether it be the ubiquitous cardboard box making a triumphant return or the naming scheme for the villains.
We’ve come to expect this level of excellence from our Metal Gear, but what about the other half of the equation? Revengeance plays much more like a Hideki Kamiya title than anything starring Solid Snake, so don’t waltz into Raiden’s story expecting “tactical espionage action.” Stealth is an option for many encounters, but it’s far from the meat of the experience. You can scout ahead with infrared augmented reality (a.k.a. Predator Vision) and stab foes in the back for an instant incapacitation, but there are far more mandatory combat sequences. With that said, you haven’t lived until you silently stealth-kill three Gekko mechs.
When sword fights do break out, that old Platinum Games brilliance shines through. Raiden is fast and maneuverable, but also an absolutely deadly force of nature. Light and heavy attacks soften up infantry in only a matter of seconds, so that you can dice them up into cubes and extract the electrolytes from their bodies. Yes, the “free slicing” mechanic and Zandatsu technique are the signature gimmicks of the title, as they allow unparallelled freedom in hacking your enemies to bits. The system works exactly as intended, providing a visceral and satisfying climax to nearly every fight. The game rarely requires the player to perform precision cuts, although it does reward you with health, energy, and BP for executing specific dismemberment.
BP is the currency of the game, and can be exchanged for new techniques, sub-weapons, and augmentations to health and damage output. This provides an incentive for efficient swordplay, while allowing for some freedom in play-style. This is made exponentially more gratifying by the addition of secondary weapons which are actually useful, unlike the majority of “stylish action” titles, wherein your default, signature death dealer is more than enough to get you to the credits.
However, it is essential to note that Revengeance is neither an exercise in combo memorization nor a tech demo for the impressive “free slicing” system. In fact, you will quickly learn that Platinum has crafted the entire fighting system to revolve around timing, reflexes, and observation. The key to almost every battle is the parry maneuver. By anticipating your enemy’s next blow, you must deflect and counter-attack to inflict any real damage. If you fail to master this technique you will be murdered quickly, brutally, and often.

REVIEW
GAMEPLAY SHOWCASE
“What’s this?” you might ask. This is basically a 20-30 minute video of straight unedited gameplay with commentary showcasing a small segment of the game and it’s various other aspects. Hopefully this will give you a better sense of what the experience is like as it can be hard to tell sometimes in edited reviews. I hope you enjoy!

Anything Platinum Games touches turns into greatness.
There’s not much else I can add that has not already been said other than good job PG and Konami.
That TMNT reference, What.The.Fuck? o_0
The game might very well be 60fps but this video ain’t. I would have loved this game on the Vita. It would have probably sold extremely well considering it has no friggin’ competition. On consoles/PC though I think I’m gonna skip it. I was a huge fan of MGS1 you see, and I loved every second of MGS2′s tanker chapter and then…
I loathe Raiden.
Taylor, Raiden’s voice actor is none other than Quinton Flynn. Not only has he provided Raiden’s voice for every Metal Gear Solid game the character is in, he’s also well-known for:
Reno in Final Fantasy: Advent Children & Crisis Core
Henry from the No More Heroes games
Axel and then Lea for the Kingdom Hearts games
Dr. Riddles from Zatch Bell! (both the anime and subsequent video games)
Kolyat Krios from Mass Effect 2 & 3
Just to name a few. Quinton Flynn is an amazing voice actor!
I really want to play this game
They should call the sequel “Revengeavenganence: The Revengening”.
Played through the Story once and now giving at a rest for a while before going back to play it on Hard.
Had a blast, since I actually really liked Raiden in MGS 2 and 4.
Platinum already announced a bunch of DLC, like the Solid Snake Wooden Sword (imbued with the Spirit of the Legendary Soldier), several VR misssions and two new Story DLC’s focusing on Jetstream Sam and Blade Wolf. Both will most likely be playable, too.
Whatever may come, I’m looking forward to it.

Raiden returns… next year.
There were fewer games at E3 that had as many questions surrounding them as Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance. There also wasn’t any game I had more fun playing.
Birdman comes out swinging against the last son of Krypton and wants to know if there has been a good Superman game? Oh yeah, happy 3 year anniversary for RAD as well!
I’m pleased to hear that this crazy ass experiment managed to work out well in the end. I also have to congratulate Platinum Games for handling the controversy much better than Cas$hcom by far.
For those that don’t know, there was a 20 minute video on Youtube explaining everything about this game from why Koami reached out to Platinum Games and much more.
That is how you get people to be a bit more open to accepting and praising your product.
I would be lying in saying that as a Metal Gear Solid fan since when MGS first came out for the original Playstation,I wasn’t concerned about how would PG handle such a massive and important series such as this.
Since Ninja Gaiden 3 dropped the soap and a certain reboot shot itself in the head, the need of a stylish but combo intensive hack and slash was most dire.
Maybe now Raiden can finally get some degree of respect and admiration instead of constantly being the butt of immature jokes.
The fact that a certain reboot was outclassed by this title in every category and people are making various Xnalara inspired 3D bashing the hell out of it makes me smile brightly.
This game is AMAZING. Camera Control issues aside, everything about it is just SO GOD DAMN FUN!
I’ll wait till the game hits the bargain bin. I’m in no rush to get this one, no matter how much praise it gets.
Sadly i cant afford it this month :/ Got to wait for that paycheck
But for now im making it my mission to see as little game play from it as possible ^^ Want to get it myself and play the crap out of it
I just can’t believe my horrible luck, this comes out the same day as Crysis 3 here in the UK and I want them both soooooooo badly. I guess I should start with this as it is already receiving really high praise but dammit my bank balance is gonna be deep in the red by the end of next month >.<
Man this year is off to a strong start.
So.. I just watched the first level playthrough done by Two Best Friends Play… my hype boner is so big it’s scraping the clouds.
I bet mine hype boner is bigger
i have to listen MGR soundtrack just to get peace. Oh friday why it cant come faster…
SPOILER ALERT!!!!
This game gets a 15/10 score from me just because of THIS reference. It’s AWESOME!

What? are you telling me MGR has reference to vanilla ice? well better cancel pre-order then. It was promising
God damnit, why do all the good games have to come out so close together? My budget is tight enough as is with Monster Hunter, Luigi’s Mansion and Bioshock Infinite, and now you’re telling me that this one DOESN’T suck?! And is, in fact, awesome?!?!?!
Alas, my poor wallet.
l may try it out but l was disappointed with the demo. l don’t know if it’s fixed in the final product but the parry mechanic was way too easy to abuse in combat. l expected it to be precise like NG but instead l could just attack in the general direction of the enemy and l parried every time they tried to attack and attacked when they didn’t. It made the game piss easy.
Is it as over-the-top as Asura’s Wrath? Because if that could be combined with satisfying gameplay, I will buy this one. Twice.
Just like I thought, they didn’t add a block button and they didn’t fix the camera, for shame.
not sure if it’s worth picking up brand new. :/
The camera I can agree with, but isn’t the whole point of the parry system that you don’t need a dedicated block button.
Don’t care about any of its flaws.
IT’S FUCKIN’ METAL GEAR!!! And I crave for MOAR!!!
Pre-ordered it and if I get lucky, I can pick it up tomorrow afternoon.
And remember, fellow EU residents:
You get the Gray Fox Skin for free! Just download it on release day.
How? where did you get this info?

You’ll have to find out for yourself
. Austin is right, the game has plenty of hilarious moments and this one takes the cake for me so far. I was in stitches when I saw it. It happens on the mission in Mexico.
sigh…. 3days to go. I hate these region specific release dates. So this game is short, well that is letdown. But most H&S games last about 6hrs(yes, even your beloved DmC lasted about 5-6hrs on HARD so dont even try). Im with birdman about soundtrack, when it gets worldwide release i get it right away! too bad metacritics overrall critics score is going down and people’s overrall score is 5.5
As long as Raiden doesn’t mosey down a hall looking like an armless Humphrey Bogart, this game might have a chance.
Oh my God… so many good games have come out this year so far… AND IT’S STILL ONLY FEBRUARY!!!
Good review but I’ll wait to buy the game used or new for cheap. I just can’t seem to justify paying $67.80 for about 6 hours of playtime. I know I’m mostly alone on this but I’m cool with that.
Your first playthru should take you 6-7 hours and then the tons of other stuff will take you much longer then that.
Trust me, easily worth the 60 bucks
Eh, I dunno. I picked up Peace Walker for $40 new when it came out and it packed loads more content and replay value than what I saw in the Revengeance demo. I might rent it, but ultimately I too am going to pass on it until the price cut. It just doesn’t fit in with what I consider Metal Gear. If I wanted Devil May Cry, I’d play the ones on PS2, otherwise… =/ I’m more eager to get my hands on Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid V. Real stealth action games that don’t involve Metal Gear’s biggest Gary Stu. One must wonder though, with Metal Gear Solid’s numbering system, never once have they used Roman Numerals… 2, 3 and 4 all used standard numbers. Why would they suddenly use V for five?
Fox blade DLC is the most broken thing ever! (Thanks Gamestop)
3 1/2 playthrus later and I am still loving this game
Damned fun
Just curious, what do you mean by the Fox blade being broken? I just started out and have been really curious what the upgrades are for it and how good it really is.
Fox blade has a chance to instant dismember with each slash. upgrading increases that chance I think. basically Jack the Ripper mode without using the mode itself. but you will get less points because of not getting arms and zandetsu
Not necessarily
I still get my zandetsu’s every time with my fox blade
It has an ability to ignore armor and go the kill every time
If you have it maxed out with the right infinite fuel cell wig, you can WALK thru this game is no time outside of boss fights and even then..
