Always saddened when I hear of more Disgaea games being released.

Don’t get me wrong, I absolutely love them, and they introduced me to some of their other games (Phantom Brave and La Pucelle <3), but they they started re-releasing the same titles with poor as gimmicks, and tried to really constantly focus on the trio, or include them in some way, shape or form.

Kinda hoping the next time I was to hear anything Disgaea related may be another sequel :(

Granted 3 was a let down, but 4 was heading in a good direction… this news just feels like a step backwards, but that's just my opinion @_@

I’m kinda.. confused.. by your disappointment. Are you talking about the PSP ports of 1 and 2? If so I don’t really know what gimmicks you’re talking about and, well, they’re ports, of course they’re going to focus on the original casts, they’re the original games.

Disgaea 3 was the one that introduced most of the awful gimmicks that dogged the series through it’s latest installments and in 3 and 4 the original trio were relegated to post-game content only and had basically no presence.

You’re also sad about more games getting released.. but you’re hoping for a sequel, which DD2 is a sequel, yet you don’t want something that focuses on the original cast, which a sequel would obviously focus on the original cast that the game was sequelizing. Or do you mean you want a Disgaea 5? And if you do, I’m curious how you think Disgaea 4 was as step forward from 2 or 3 since it’s the most gimmick ridden of the series.

Unless you have some real malice toward team LEF, DD2 seems to be the biggest step forward and exactly what you want, taking the good bits from D4 and cutting out some of the gimmicks that weren’t working out.

When I refer to gimmicks for the ports, or re-releases of the game it is more to the fact that very little was added or changed, it kinda felt irrelevant.

Yes, Disgaea 3 did, and while the original trio had been pushed to post-game content, I think they probably didn’t even need that much.

When I think of a sequel, I do think it should continue from the last major release, but maybe thats a nitpick.

I thought Disgaea 4 was a step up from 3, not 2, especially not 1. I hated 3, not really for the story, or the extras (though there were a tonne of additional characters that sometimes become a bit bothersome), but it was the main characters, their actions and nearly everything about them which made them well… unlikable, which was just a big step back from the first and second games. So yeah, I think 4 was much better than 3, but in no way the best.

I think that they needed to shy away from the trio, because personally I thought Disgaea HOD ended great on that note, with (depending on the ending of course) the three having grown a lot in terms of how they acted etc.

With D2, a lot of that just went out the door (in terms of the first game characters) which was a shame, but I still enjoyed D2 for the most part.

D3 kind of left a bad taste after playing through, and it also made the game wayyyyy to easy to level and then pandered to the DLC too much.

D4, while not as great as the first two (and still suffered the DLC curse), was in my opinion better than the third installment, and I thought it showed that they were getting on the right track to revitalising the series.

So yeah, I am not hating so much on the new game, I just think D1 did plenty for that story, and a sequel to it kinda seemed pointless (based on the story that has been released so far for this particular game)

I disagree. Plot-wise, the first game has always felt the strongest to me, and I’ve always found the original characters to be the most interesting. That and D2 turned me off from the series for a while. Adell is as generic as you can get.

As much as I liked D4, DD2 feels like we’re finally going home. The real question is, can they recapture the magic of the first game?

Oh, and when you say “gimmicks,” if you’re including monster fusion and monsters as weapons in that, I rather like how the system turned out in D4. Monsters were a fairly useless classes in the first two games (Thursday aside) and arguably in D3 (where an expired monster weapon still counted against your deployment limit). In D4, you have a reason to train up some spare monsters. Or just wreck everything with DESCO and Gig in the post-game.

Oh by all means, the first did have the best plot, but thats what I was trying to illustrate.

For me, Disgaea 1 ended on a good note, and answered most of the questions it delivered. I just always thought of the Disgaea series as one that would benefit from the whole ‘different stories intertwining’ kind of feel it was trying to do, I just felt they dropped the ball for a bit and that for me, Disgaea 4 felt like they were getting some mojo back in terms of development.

For me, the new release does continue off from a good story, but did it really need to? I suppose if it can restore the characters from the damage they took from the other games they appeared in, then it could be good, but then again, it could also be a complete bomb, and then well, they may not be able to really be what they were again if that’s the case.

Anyways, I guess all I can do is wait and see!

Oh, sweet. Seeing news about the BRS game was probably the last thing I would’ve expected from this. That’s awesome. Everything else looks really good too. NIS is definitely going to be getting a LOT of my money this year. Thanks for the heads up Taylor.

Ah my girlfriend really wanted to get Black rock shooter, and I would have by far preferred a physical release… Well, I guess chalk another one up to SCEA being assholes.

Well nice to hear something about BRS. I just bought the game from someone who had imported it since enough of the UI is in english that you can atleast muddle your way through the battles. If they do put it out on PSN, especially if its for the Vita, I’ll probably grab it since I will have something to sit on my shelf regardless.

Guided Fate Paradox looks.. interesting. I didn’t really dig ZHP either but I’m curious to see how they can expand the idea on consoles.

If it’s not on the Vita store, those of us with a PS3 will likely be able to download it to the PS3 and transfer it to the Vita from there.

This isn’t a guarantee, but that’s what happened when Growlanser Generations came out, and it works for a slew of other PSP and PS1 classics that aren’t on the Vita store for whatever reason.

I think you can chalk that up to Game Stop more than Sony. Gotta sell what people want.
