RetroActive: Atari Flashback 3, 9.2 out of 10 based on 9 ratings

I recently found an Atari Flashback 3 released by At Games sitting on a shelf at Wal-Mart. So I grabbed it and now I’ll let you know if the system is worth your money as well.

Does it emulate the old VCS 2600 entirely? I think not. :\

Shame, really. I never knew find to a Flashback 2 back when they were still sold in stores, because they were almost totally compatible with most VCS games in terms of hardware minus a cartridge port you had to add.

Still, I own the 2600 Jr. That’s close enough, and I can always clean it up.

I’m not exactly sure how VCS emulation works though I’m fairly sure it is on the low end of having compatibility issues. I would assume that if the system was hacked it could run a massive chunk of the VCS library.

If it had River Raid and Pitfall, I would so grab it.

It has Pitfall, can’t remember if it has River Raid off the top of my head.

Not according to the game list on the box. I checked, both in the store and online. Was it included but left off the list for some reason?

I actually just got the Flashback 4. The big differences is that it comes the the paddle wheel controllers also and the regular controllers are now wireless. But it still has ports on the console for the old Atari controllers.

I may not be remembering this correctly, but I think you can exit out of games and return to the main menu without having to turn off the console.

I have a Flashback 1 at home. Found it at a Flea market for just 10 €.

And I can confirm, that the Sega Genesis controller actually works on it! Even with my cable extension.
Should work with other peripherals, too.

The original Atari and Genesis systems allowed for switching controllers so that isn’t surprising. I was playing 2600 games the other day using a Sega Master System controller actually.
