RAD Episode 274: Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, 6.1 out of 10 based on 9 ratings

Birdman is back for the first of five TMNT themed shows for RAD!

In 2013, we’re taking things back to basics and we’re talking about one of the first games Birdman ever rented as a kid. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles on the NES is a game that has driven many kids insane and frustrated others but we loved it just the same. In this first show of 2013 we believe it time to take on a challenging game and do it with a grin on our collective faces and see if we can indeed keep up with our heroes in a half shell.

Take ourselves back to the summer of 1989 and fight with turtle power!

Birdman

Mike Dodd is the guy who always said video games could be turned into a profession and eventually it turned out he was right. Mike is a passionate nerd about all facets of nerd culture from the love of the BBC’s Doctor Who to the very latest in the fight game scene, he’s on to it and likely turned into his new obsession. Dodd was raised to love all things that were pop culture from viewing his first horror movie at five years old to owning one of the first Nintendos in North America, it’s been a childhood dominated by the controller and movie screens and he couldn’t be happier. Roleplaying games such as Dungeons and Dragons dominated the high school years and unhealthy doses of Japanese anime were frequent as he completed his education and took sometime off to explore Canada and the US. However as all good times must come to an end, a decision was made to get some experience and do something fun and learn something and meant getting involved in the media. Mike volunteered with Rogers Television and became the audio/technical director for several successful programs and decided that he should further that experience by going to college. 4 years and several massive headaches later, Mike became known as “The Birdman” of This week in Geek but that is a story for another website….

Great review, Mike. This game doesn’t get enough love, in my opinion. Regardless of the difficulty, it was fun and certainly a different style game then what the series has ultimately become.

Was I the only one who got sucked into this game by the box art alone, way back when? I miss the old days when box art alone could pull you into a game you’d otherwise not even play.

    Tips for beating it:
    Master jumping: hard jumps

Know where to go: there’s a lot of alternate harder paths, dead-ends or places you only need to go if you lose a turtle or need pizza.

FILL UP THE SCROLL WEAPON BEFORE GOING TO THE TECHNODROME: It’s the best weapon in the game and that last corridor before Shredder will be the end of you if you don’t.

I’ve beaten it twice! once with my dad’s help when I was 5, and once a few years ago.

Iv’e been playing games since the 80′s and your pretty brave beating that game lol..I usually get halfway through a game and my mind starts to wander and I move on to another one. Although I did finish most of the old Sierra games and Monkey Island..Checkout Ron Gilberts new game called ‘The Cave’ it’s another classic..

Simply MUST play Persona 4 Golden on the Vita. The original is still very excellent but the extra content on the Vita version is substantial enough to warrant favoring it. Also, it’s the version that can more easily be picked up as a new copy and hence support the publisher.
