GView : Sonic “Fan Movie” Thoughts,
A Sonic fan movie made on a budget trying to mix in real actors with Sonic the hedgehog? I don’t know how I feel about this…

At the very most, I liked a lot of the ideas. I liked the idea of Robotnik killing off most South Islanders cause it fit with the fact that there seemed to be more humans in the Sonic world than Mobians. Unlike the comics where the opposite seems to be true and we’re never really given an explenation as to why some mobians have powers and others don’t. No one even… mentions it.
Buuut I’ve never really been a fan of making the Sonic series “darker”.
At the end of the day these are brightly colored animals with super powers and you’d have to do a lot of work to make me take a lot of what they do as serious as, say, the comics ask me to a majority of the times. I’m not saying the series can’t dig into darker themes, but it should really be a bright cartoony world that get dark when nessesary. Not a dark world that centers around this snarky blue hedgehog that spouts 1 liners like nobodies’ buissness and doesn’t really take much seriously himself.
I actually liked Sonic’s banter with the female GUN agent, as it was funny and he IS a teenage boy and it’s honestly not that off to assume he’d flirt with anything belonging to an opposite gender, as long as it speaks english and has a pretty face. Not saying he’d make out with it but come on guys. Sonic 06 is 7 years old now. Let it go.
Overall I agree with Richard over there. I expected a lot more from the 2 years this thing has been in the works but while there’s a lot pf spotyness in the execution, I like some of the ideas and it might even warm me up to the idea of a darker Sonic world.
I agree that Sonic should remain as a cartoon, but for what it is they did a pretty good job. The GUN uniforms are accurate to the video games without looking silly (which is surprisingly rare to see in video game adaptations) and I really like Jaleel White’s reprisal of Sonic. The CGI could stand to be better, but it IS a marked improvement on the Megaman fan film they made before. I would give the movie itself a C+, but they definitely get an A for effort, especially considering once the later chapters flesh out the story and build the universe more. Taken as a whole, the entire series just might raise its own grade.
I couldn’t do any better
That was pretty good for having virtually no budget. Shame that MegaG didn’t at least like the SatAM TV version.
Here’s what I liked:
Decent CGI despite no budget.
Setting it on par with Sonic Adventure.
Various internet cameos who’re also Sonic fans (Doug Walker’s a fan?)
Knuckles.
The guy playing Robotnik looks the part.
What I didn’t like:
Iffy in Jaleel White. He’s always sounded nasally when he does Sonic.
Guy playing Robotnik should play him like the SatAM verion.
Sonic needs a little more work, because he looks ‘hairy’ rather than spikey.
Sonic should be portrayed more with an attitude rather than a generic anime free spirit that borders on the weekday TV version. (I was afraid he was gonna say ‘Gotta speed, keed!’ at some point)
Include Tails, keep Knuckles, and keep all the rest out of this.
Show a better portrayal of speed by utilizing more CGI or going full on CGI.
Get the director of the Portal short film to help with direction so it doesn’t feel so cheesy.
CGI gunfire rather than firing blanks.
Maybe it’s me, but I’ve always felt that if Sonic were ever made for TV/film, they should just keep him graphically rendered. Whenever he’s animated, he loses all sense of depth and speed. They should just take the Sonic Generations engine, render it on a powerful PC or custom console and do episodes that way. That way you keep the tremendous depth, motion and sense of speed at 60 FPS rather than dumbing it down to 2D animation at maximum 24 FPS in short bursts.
I guess this need to be said. LET SONIC DIE! No one is ever fucking happy! The Sonic “Fans” are never satisfied with anything anymore. No matter how the newer games have actually been good. Bitch and fucking moan that’s all I ever see; it pisses me off that the “Loyal fans” of this franchise is the equivalent raving pack of wolf ready to rip apart anything that is released. Accept that not everything is perfect! I know it’s no Spielberg, but shit it’s a two year project made by a true fan that they want to make a movie trying to put Sonic in the best light they can. So let Sonic die, will people be happy then? You can’t bitch about him anymore is that what people want? Sonic had bad games everyone knows the horrors of ’06 and Free Rider, but Christ I’m not even a very big Sonic fan and I feel like I have to defend him, but the fan base won’t most the time. I know the true fans exist; they are just the vocal minority.
oh yeah… the “true fan” argument, haven’t seen THAT one before -.- Yes the new games are good, but that has absolutely NOTHING to do with this fan film so… what’s your point? You’re upset about people complaining? Well welcome to the smegging internet, get used to it.
I can’t BELIEVE Doug Walker agreed to star in what he should have seen would be a piece of crap!
I for one Really like it. The way I see it, this is very close to how I’d imagined a live action Sonic The Hedgehog movie would appropriately work.
I’m impressed with the way Sonic looks like considering even with a low budget, it appears that they put alot of effort into making Sonic look good. I would’ve preferred maybe a lighter shade of blue fur, but that’s really my only one complaint I have to say, because this film is Great.
Getting J’aleel White back again to voice him was also a bonus.
It’s just how Sonic looks kind of… Ewwww
Kool! Now I don’t have to watch it myself
Fan film or not, no budget or not, I honestly feel that they should have had a lot more to show for the two years of work that supposedly went into the movie. There were some good concepts, and some good moments, such as the man playing Dr. Robotnik (though I admit to writing him off when I first saw him due to a lack of an awesome stache) but on the whole, the spec film could have been much better with all the time they sunk into it.
The cameos were distracting, and while I thought that the CG models of the robots were well done (certainly better than the CG robot masters from the Megaman film) they still looked rather awkward when moving, and Sonic and Knuckles’ models looked more robotic than the robots at points.
But I think that the biggest fault against the movie, at least from a writing standpoint, was that it wasn’t sure what story it wanted to tell. In all of 18 minutes, the film goes out of its way to reference the classic games, the modern games, and even the Archie and Fleetway comic plots, with no clear indication on which direction it’s going. Even if it is a spec film, there should have been a much more focused in terms of the story it wanted to tell.
I agree with the final statement. It was definitely awkward watching this movie. Some things are pretty cool about it, but overall it just felt weird to me. The animation – and I know that people are gonna hate me for saying it – just wasn’t good to me. I know that it’s a fan film with no budget, but I mean come on. The rest of the film looks great, but the animation just doesn’t look good to me. Sonic looks, as was said before, very stiff. The animation in the videogames are just much more fluid and polished.
Not terrible in the grand scheme of things, it was cute and a good nostalgia trip with Jaleel White as Sonic, but I don’t think I’d watch it again.
I’m with you here. It’s not a horrible fan film but it’s also not a good one. It just feels like a wanna be Nolan film. It’s just lame and shallow. What is worse is that there are so many better fan films that are low budgeted than this. Heck even some fan videos that don’t have story have better plot than this.
Never mind this having little to no budget, hence fan movie. The Magaman fan film was great though. The only major complaint I have is the they never actually say the words “Sonic” and “the Hedgehog” in the same sentence.
