After months of rumors and more, Disney has finally officially unveiled Disney Infinity and it turns out the game will indeed be a Skylanders-like title with an equal focus on action/exploration and user-generated content. In point of fact, Disney is referring to Infinity as not a game but a platform for the entirety of its intellectual properties and its clear they have got big plans. Already everything from Pirates of the Caribbean to classic Disney animated films like Tangled and Dumbo to the works of Pixar to TV shows like Phineas and Ferb have been confirmed for inclusion and the possibilities (did someone say Marvel and Star Wars) seem staggering.
As previously alleged, the heart of the Infinity will be an open world setting ala The Toy Box mode from developer Avalanche Software’s previous title Toy Story 3 the Game. Players will be able to explore, fight baddies, race, and more across a sprawling world that will respond differently depending on which character they are currently playing as. Bolstering this mode will be sets of figures that will in addition to adding content to the open world will also each come with their own set of distinct story-driven levels officially refereed to as Playsets.
The first three sets of figures announced by Disney will revolve around Pirates of the Caribbean, Monsters Inc, and The Incredibles and will include a total of seventeen figurines and more. The Monster’s University Playset for example will focus on Sully and Mike battling with a rival monster university called Fear Tech while the Pirates Playset allow players to build and manage their own pirate ship. The opening wave of Disney Infinity products will include the following:
Disney Infinity Interactive Pieces – Initially a line of 40 collectible interactive pieces will be introduced that allow players to expand and customize their play experiences.
Disney Infinity Interactive Character Figures – Seventeen character figures will allow players to experience a variety of their favorite characters in true to property experiences and in “Toy Box” mode.
Disney Infinity Base – When figures are placed on the Infinity base, they unlock the world and play experiences of Disney Infinity.
Disney Infinity Power Discs – Interactive discs can be placed on the Infinity base to power up characters and “Toy Box” with unique powers, customizations and gadgets.
Among the examples given for Power Discs and Interactive Pieces include Buzz Lightyear’s famous jet pack, the flamingo croquet mallets from Alice in Wonderland, and a rideable recreation of the famous Dumbo ride from Disneyland. Additionally there will be hundreds of unlockable new toys (including characters, vehicles, and characters who are vehicles) awaiting in the open world of Infinity‘s incarnation of The Toy Box. And it seems that user-generated content will also play a big role in Infinity if the above descriptions and the reveal trailer are anything to judge by.
Speaking of the reveal trailer… Well you can find it below along with a bunch of screenshots and more but I want to warn hardcore Disney maniacs to hold onto there hats and maybe not watch it in public. I will not be held responsible for anyone who loses their cool and completely embarrasses themselves in frotn of co-workers and/or strangers as a result. You have been warned. Also just how many Disney references can you spot in the below video? Go.
Gaaaaaaaaaaaah. *Ahem* Sorry about that I am afraid my own inner Disney fanboy got the better of me for a second there. Will not happen again. Disney Infinity is currently being aimed for release of June this year on Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, Wii U and 3DS. Stay tuned to Blistered Thumbs for continuing coverage of the game and be sure to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

Hey! Look! A Skylanders-like game that doesn’t have to use the the Spyro license and ruin the franchise forever, and therefore, I just might actually like this one!
*gasps*
period…
A skylanders-like disney game? And its on the Wii as well as the WiiU? *throws money at the screen* take it…take all my money! T-take it! Just take it!
But in all seriousness everyone in my family loves disney even my parents who aren’t very much gamers. This would be the ultimate game we will ever see, good or bad!
This sounds like it could be awesome, but also VERY, VERY expensive.
Funny, I just finished playing Toy Story 3 on PS3. Toy Box mode alone makes it a very decent movie-licensed game.
And now they’re making a whole game out of it? Where can I sign up?
Imagine the possibilities…
Well, I am impressed. I’ll certainly be looking into this as it gets closer to launch date, but I don’t think this is quite the ‘shut up and take my money’situation that others are going to herald it as. I might change my tune if I see some of the older Disney properties getting some love as well. Perhaps a level based off of The Jungle Book or Snow White’s Castle. And of course, I’d want character representations too. Basil from Great Mouse Detective? Robin Hood? These things exist and it would be nice for Disney to really reach far into their backlog and see what they can really do with this concept.
Damn, that looks brilliant. However i was thinking, this is a perfect opportunity for Disney to use the Marvel, Lucasfilm and Muppet Studio Universes. Indiana Jones, Captain America and Kermit the frog, all simultaneously kicking ass, it would be brilliant.
OH DEAR GOD WANT. I may just get this for both the Wii U and the 3DS, assuming there are enough differences between the two modes to make it worthwhile. If not, then definitely the Wii U version.
