With their recent transition to Free to Play complete, Star Wars: The Old Republic is now focusing on their first expansion to the game, one that will involve certain corpulant worms that run underground crime rings, the notorious Hutts!
The first official expansion to The Old Republic, titled Rise of the Hutt Cartel, has been revealed by the developers and is already available for pre-order. It will be a digital expansion to The Old Republic, with key features already outlined for players. The biggest of which is likely the level cap, being raised to level 55 and the feature of a new planet to explore, the world of Mekeb. The Old Republic team is also touting Rise of the Hutt Cartel as their first major story-driven expansion, with hundreds of hours of dialogue added to the experience for in-game questlines. The promise of new gear, weapons, and abilities is already a given of course, but more specific details will be revealed soon regarding the expansion.
What we do know for sure is price. Unsubscribed players will be able to pick up Rise of the Hutt Cartel for $19.99, while subscribed players can net it for only $9.99, plus have access to it five days earlier if they pre-order by January 7th. The official release date is only marked as Spring of 2013, but chances are BioWare and EA will reveal more in the coming weeks.

At the Star Wars Guild Summit there was a video shown to the attendees that detailed the upcoming 1.2 Mega-Patch. Finally, after much waiting, comes the actual clear and HD version of that video…

Man, has it really been a year since SWTOR was released? Crazy how time flies. I may get back into it… at some point.
*Slow clap* Well done EAware, welldone. I’m honestly shocked that they’re letting it go for such a low price, even lower for subscribers. Given who we’re dealing with, I would have expected them to charge at least $40 even for something with as little content as this.
Charging $20 for one planet and five levels, given how TOR worked, that’ll keep you busy for a few days at best if you play at an average rate. And let’s not forget you paid $50 for the core game which featured well over ten planets and 50 levels.
Bioware Austin, I know you’re in dire straits but that’s still no justification to try and rip off your customers.
If I may play devil’s advocate here, $20 for a few days worth of game is a pretty good deal. And now that it’s F2P, you don’t have that initial $50 wall. Compare it to WoW which still has you paying at least $60 to get yourself from zero to the current expansion then a non-optional $15 a month.
Now, with that said, a WoW expansion entitles you to basically the near 12-18 months worth of new content and I expect SWTOR to be releasing these little expansions fairly frequently in lieu of what would normally be an update patch.
Yea, that initial 50 being gone doesn’t very well count for people that did buy it like me. I really did like this game, I really did, but I have to say I just can’t play the game now The game treats people that bought the game but don’t subscribe barely any different from non-subscribers. on a long term basis I would say that buying all the features through cash shop would directly cost less than just paying a fee every month though. However, I could deal with many of the limited features if it weren’t for 2 things :
1.You are limited to to the world chat if you are a none subscriber. a MMORPG is about socializing and one thing I enjoyed was randomly getting into conversations across the planet as well most people did… it was a major deciding factor in what makes any MMO fun… at least to me. you rely on other people to sell your game… you don’t limit the chat options its stupid.
2. The limited characters. You know another game I like? DC Universe Online. Why do I like it? because you purchase just one expansion pack and the game treats you like a freaking king. SWTOR Gives you 1 more slot as a boost for being a previous subscriber, what does DCU? 4, freaking “4″ more slots. You can play all the classes in the game with the amount of free slots they give you with one expansion. Different games, different themes, different management but oh so much to learn from.
Swotor is not a bad game, however, when I look at their cash shop I don’t see anything inventive as a solution I see a generic cash shop that was made in haste and fear. I know that they had to go through a troubling turn around but this cash shop system will not save them without some major changes… I am sure of it.
I feel for the early adopters. I really do. I’ve been on that side of the fence more than once. Hopefully SWTOR will be example to developers to either go F2P from the get-go or do the GW2/ New TSW approach to things. Though, SWTOR is an example of how to do F2P completely wrong.
You gotta figure though that if they’re raising the level cap that means there will be new end game content as well and for subscribers the expansion is only $10. I’m sorry I just can’t agree with complaints when I remember expansions always costing $40. Even Everquest 2′s “adventure packs” cost $10 and they had less content then this does.
Ah yes, paying $15 a month + $10 for the expansion (even though Bioware was originally hinting the expansion pack was going to be free for subscribers), I get the feeling the F2Ps are actually getting the best deal here since they didn’t buy the game, aren’t paying $15/month, and just get the extra content for a straight up $20. Yet another kick to the teeth for those who bought into the game early.
Well it is likely that the current plans are going to reflect low-costs across the board because of the F2P Model. Because of that early adopters are lost in the shuffle for paying more.
Reminds me of Everquest, the original one at least. But then again that is still going on after 15 years so they must be doing something right.
Oi those stupid packs. I think I bought all of them and I cant recall once even going to them. EQ2′s still pumping out $40+ expansion, admittedly their expansions have massive amounts of content.
Sounds interesting
