Good review, if a little rushed at times.
But why the heck didn’t you mention the boring combat system, which is the only real flaw in the game, apart from Consular’s not getting a hot female companion anyway.
It was the crappy and repetitive combat system that made me stop playing and I am sure its the same for many others.

Could have been such a great game if they had given us the force powers from Jedi Academy, or possibly Unleashed, would have been pretty good even with the KNOTR system.
But no, we get stupidly underpowered lightsabers; no force powers for knights and advanced attacks have to be charged; no force push, pull, jump, speed (2 second dash doesn’t count), combat lift (take one player out of fight doesn’t count) or any of the expected force powers with consular. And for someone who has spent most of their childhood learning how to use a lightsaber, the pathetic consular saber abilities are really just stupid.
Blaster bolt deflection is shoddy, the advanced powers which take several seconds to charge do less than half the damage of just throwing rocks at the enemy.
Granted the upper tier skills are handy for clearing rooms, but its just not good enough.

The trouble with SWTOR is that the developers seem to have been very focussed on making things balanced for the gunslingers, mus’n't offend the precious first person shooter crowd. Which is nice for those who want to be soldiers, but I think I am one of the vast majority who come to Star Wars games wanting to play Jedi (or Sith). Its the key drawcard, lightsabers and force powers, and to completely water them down in order to provide a better experience for the shooters is just wrong.
The boring and force unfriendly combat system has to be the reason it went to free-to-play so quickly.

The combat system is pretty much identical to WoW’s. If you like WoW, you will like this. If you don’t like WoW, you won’t.

The consular, like the inquisitor, is meant to play a certain way: You’re either a healer, a ranged dps, a melee dps, or a melee tank, depending on which advanced class and talents you choose. If you spec yourself to be a ranged dps or healer, yes your lightsaber attacks will be weak, because you’re not supposed to be hitting things with your lightsaber much anyway. That would be like hunters or mages complaining about their melee dps.
That doesn’t mean Bioware forgot about iconic force powers, though. It’s just that most of the ones you mentioned are Knight and Sith Warrior abilities: Leaping to the enemy, pushing them off platforms, choking them with the force, etc. It sounds like you just picked the wrong class at the character creation screen.
And… gunslingers? First person shooter crowd? All classes in the game play in the MMO format, you don’t feel like you’re playing a FPS, ever, so I’m not sure where you thought you were going with that comparison.

Hi there. Some who watch this site regularly might remember a while back when this game came out that Spoony and Angry Joe decided to set up rival guilds, with fans choosing to be either a Republic side Spoony Expendable, or a Sith side Disciple of Hate. Needless to say, as “Evil is Cool”, the disciples outnumbered the expendables by a fair margin come launch day.

    I was an Expendable.

Anyone who took part in those days on either side might remember me as Elenee, sage consular and guildmaster of the Expendables. I don’t play any more, and haven’t for some time. I’d like to throw my two cents in as to why the game ended up in the free to play bin.

Some folks would argue that in this day and age paid subscription in an MMORPG is unfeasible. I disagree. Certainly the alternative can seem more attractive once the player base starts to dwindle, but the ugly truth is, the players leave for a reason. Personally I’ve never had a problem paying a subscription. I’m not made of money, but I look at it like a hobby or club. A little outlay for a lot of time spent doing things I enjoy with people who share my interests. Honestly the truth is that people will go right ahead and pay through the nose for something they want, we’re a society of ravenous consumers. So why did people stop wanting SWTOR?

Sages. The answer is sages. Well, some other stuff too, but mostly sages. And also evil is cool.

The developers of this game spent a great deal of time adding personal story elements, which is great. What is not great is that by far the weakest and, honestly, boring and disjointed story is that of the consular. Why is this such a problem? Because when the game launched EVERYONE WAS A CONSULAR. Republic side, that is. It’s not hard to see why, the class type is the most typically “jedi-ish” in the game. You want to swing a lightsaber and leap around around the room like a champion? Be a consular. You want to pick pieces of the scenery up and hurl them at your enemies? Be a consular. You want to hold life and death in your hands and kill your enemies with the power of your freakin’ MIND? Be a consular. So yeah, consulars were popular, and then they were frustrating, and then the real problems started to show. Namely sorcerers. That would be your Sith side counterpart of the sage consular. Except cool. Force lightning, need I say more? Well yes, I also have to say that they didn’t dress like they thought the height of fashion was a pair of snazzy novelty oven mitts. My god, I thought WoW paladin outfits were bad. There you’d be, feeling pretty righteous about being on the “good” side, when some nasty Sith type would walk past you flaunting his bling and making fun of your oven mitts. Killjoys. Thus arose the saying popular on our server “fashion designers work for the dark side”. There was also the much belabored issue that pretty much everyone in the game agreed that the animation for sorcerer abilities was fractionally faster than that of consulars, giving them an edge in battle. Whether this was true or an optical illusion, I couldn’t say. But I will say this, the complaints that sages may have had against sorcerers was nothing compared to the entirely legitimate complaints that smugglers had against sages. Namely, smuggler healers SUCKED. I knew one or two who managed to play their class decently despite how severely underpowered they were, but this put even the best smuggler player roughly on par with your average half-hearted button masher of a sage healer. A lot of smugglers simply gave up or re-rolled, putting them behind the curve again, needing to re-gear themselves and wasting a lot of time on characters they didn’t actually want to play. So why was this so truly awful if, as has been stated, everyone was a consular anyway? I mean, sure you’d be alienating a few poor schmucks, but the majority would still be solid, right? Well no, because then the game developers decided to “fix” the issue. Oh yeah, smugglers (of which no one was one anymore) could now heal efficiently… but the price. Oh the price. The trade off was that sage consulars got nerfed up the wazoo. And like I said, everyone was one. In addition to this, a new raid instance was released, which was… you know, alright I guess. Some bounty hunter or mercenary jackass that we all had to go kill for some reason. Not very clear why. He wasn’t Soa, or the Hutt guy. They were fun, bombastic Star Wars-ey badguys. Mercenary guy was.. there, I guess? Had loot? We kill things for loot, right? Not to, you know, defend whatever or save things. It’s for the loot. Who needs any of that story crap. The real problem with this guy was that he was hard. I mean hard as balls. You had to have your A team good to go for every match, forget trying to gear up any newbies. Oh wait, whats that? ALL your healers are either newbies or freshly nerfed? Well, sucks to be you then. Go do some daily quests. Enjoy your oven mitts, you’ll be wearing them a while. Oh, but don’t worry, turns out the gear this guy drops actually isn’t much of an upgrade anyway. In fact, in some cases you’ll actually LOSE stats. But you are the only three healers left in the entire world so you’d better damn well show up!

It was around this point players started leaving in droves. People just didn’t care anymore. You’d have to resort to emotional blackmail to get your good raiders to show up to waste five hours of their lives trying to push through the three people who actually wanted to be there.

I’ve gone on mostly about my experiences as a sage, coloured by my experience as guild master. But the cracks spread further than this, as any long time player could attest. The fundamental flaw, the fault line on which the rest of the game is built, is at the very core of the matter. Style over substance. Oh what’s that? The game has space battles? Oh, they’re kind of crap on-rails things with little or no reward. Wait, you have companions with their own individual stories that you can get involved in? Oh wait, they’re of no use anywhere but solo questing. You have your very own space ship??? Oh. That’s right. You’re a jedi. Your ship is small and ugly and can’t be customized. Lots of useless frills that sound awesome in concept, but fall woefully flat in execution. Your very own speeder bike? Ah, every single one looks like it was made out of spare parts and scrap metal. So much for my dreams of hot-rod glory. At one point, when it became obvious that the game was in trouble, the devs held an honest to god guild masters’ summit. I regrettably could not attend in person, being as I live in Australia, but I viewed the live stream. Basically what it amounted to was “Hey! We have all these really cool ideas for gimmicky gadgets and whatever. Look at our legacy system! Isn’t it gimmicky and gadgety? Um…. please tell us what we’re doing wrong. Please?” What they got in response was a bunch of “hey, there’s this gimmick that I personally am interested in that no one else in the world gives a crap about? Could you put that in the game too?” Of far more use would be if they’d actually had some of their staff GET INVOLVED WITH A GUILD. You know, rather than asking, find out what it’s actually like on the inside first hand. Would have cost them a buttload less money too. The result of this exercise in futility was that, once again, we got a lot of flashy new toys to play with, but they failed to address the actual underlying problems that people were having. Nobody quits a game cos they don’t have a damn pet tauntaun. People quit because there’s no more PvE to do and their class is too frustratingly unbalanced for PvP. There it is. MMO designers of the world take note. It’s not a mystery.

Oh, and for anyone interested in the result of the Expendables/Disciples rivalry, outside of an instant and often hilariously specific vendetta in every game of Huttball (which the Sith usually dominated by virtue of it being the only thing they ever got to play), we had approximately one open world battle, which amounted to a couple of our guys getting their butts kicked by means of massively superior Sith numbers. Cos, you know, evil is cool.

TL/DR: if you don’t want your game going F2P, give your players enough progression to keep them interested, and prioritize game mechanics over vanity items.

      Hi Elenee!

I have to agree with you on everything, I didn’t so much mind having to wear an elaborate bridal gown as a sage, but alas I never found my prince and was left at the altar. Not sure if I agree about weak smuggler healers being a bad thing, making fun of Dizz’s inadequate AoE heals was half the fun of raiding for me.

Also, I’m certain the only reason the Disciples beat us is because they were using aimbots and wall hax. Such is the way of the dark side.

As for TOR I will not be returning until I can play as an Ewok, or at least a Jawa on a TaunTaun.

Ah, the bridal gown. You know, I’m almost tempted to try the F2P version just to see if they fixed my radiant white headpiece poking through the top of that brown off the shoulder hoodie chest. I can see that particular paid feature being something of a problem, lol.

I agree with you on much of what you say, particularly about the consular class’s story. It sucks so hard. I got mine to the end of coruscant and just couldn’t make myself play him anymore.
I’m a little confused as to why there were so many consulars, as you say. The Knight is a much more lightsaber-focused class (and an easy transition from WoW’s and Rift’s warrior, they play very similarly). In addition, the knight’s story draws a lot of parallels to Luke Skywalker. You get a little droid that looks like R2, then another droid that looks like C-3PO, a smuggler healer that passes for Han. You get Kira so you can fap every 5 minutes. You’re constantly tempted by the power of the dark side and you see visions, etc.
I came in late to the party but my time with my guardian, whom I’ve dressed up in customizable trooper gear, has been very enjoyable. I think the knight has the best story in the game.
The problem I saw was that once you hit 50, the game takes a drastic change. And this is true of really any MMO. Up until now, you’ve been going from planet to planet, completing quests that further both your faction’s goal of securing that planet and your own personal class story. Then you hit 50, and all of a sudden all of that stops. The game turns into WoW at the level cap: A bunch of dudes sitting in the capital city looking to run some dungeon or raid to get better gear so they can do a harder version of the same raid over and over. Or you go to some themepark full of daily quests, grinding them day in and day out for cash and gear so you can do… more of the same.
The bottom line, IMO, is that the fun part of the game is the journey, the story you experience from 1-50, and then once that’s over there’s nothing to hold your attention anymore. And they haven’t really fixed that, the only new world content they’ve released since I started playing is a new daily quest theme park (which does have a small story quest to get a new robot companion, which is good, but then as you mentioned, what do you do with him except more theme park grinding?)

Yeah, you’re absolutely right. From a story standpoint, the knight is very much the more archetypal jedi. Unfortunately none of us knew that going in. I remember looking at the classes when choosing what I would live my SWTOR life as, and thinking “hmm, jedi knight. Yeah, that’s a warrior. Tank or melee. I want to use the freaking FORCE, man!” I never really had cause to complain about the way my consular played (up until the point she got nerfed like a mofo), I loved the hell out of rescuing people out of harm’s way (or into it, if I was feeling mischievous) and hurling chunks of the room at things. Iresso, Nadia, and all the other consular companions can go right to hell though. Moochers.

You can tell by the storylines which classes Bioware felt were the most important. Knights have to face off against the Emperor, while Sages deal with diseases and such. I think the Devs expected more players to want to be lightsaber-bashing warriors than Force-wielding scholars…which makes the Sage Nerf hurt even more. To me on a role-playing and story basis, the Sage feels more like the Jedi ideal than the Knight…a seeker of knowledge and understanding, someone who uses the Force for defense and healing. Saber duels are kinda secondary to someone that can throw tanks around WITH HIS MIND! The only force-users I max-leveled were a Sage and a Sorcerer, I pretty much ignored the Warrior and Knight as boring.

A couple of notes from an ex-subscriber who came back for f2p.
Yes, the restrictions placed on preferred and f2p accounts are harsh. However, every cash shop item, afaik, is an item. After it’s purchased, it’s bound to the character who purchased it for a day or so. After that period of time expires, it can be traded, sold, and put on the auction house like any other item.
Therefore, if you’re serious about playing the game but want to play f2p, and you’re willing to invest some effort in, you can buy these unlock items that will permanently remove one restriction or another, either from one character or from all characters on your account. If the unlock you’re after is common, you may be able to find it listed on the auction house. If it’s rare and expensive, you may have to spend some time looking for someone willing to buy the item for you, in hopes that you’ll pay them back over time.
I have had some success in doing this, but I had the advantage of having a level 50 character, and therefore my ability to earn ingame currency is superior to someone who is just starting. So your mileage may vary, but it’s worth mentioning that it is indeed possible to alleviate many of the f2p restrictions without putting money down yourself.

Yeah they went out of there way to make sure you can’t enjoy the game if you aren’t willing to put any money in it. It sucks but it’s pretty obvious why, in comparison to all the other MMOs that went F2P, I don’t think any of those other MMOs were still struggling to make back the budget that went into the initial release.

As for the similarities to WoW, that was the main reason I avoided this game in general and had high hopes for GW2. The one thing you can’t really claim about GW2 is that it apes WoW, because it’s about the furthest you can get without changing genres.

Active subscriber since launch with the mega super nerd edition (read: Collector’s Edition for 200 bucks), and still subscribed, speaking.

I and several others have been actively petitioning that Bioware remove a lot of the restrictions and refund the cartel points for those who spent money to alleviate those restrictions. Many of them are complete nonsense and I’ve been stating this since day one of their F2P details.

It is insanely restrictive and they even limit the amount of quick slot bars you can have. If you’re considering playing this game and consider putting money for the quick bars, please do NOT. We are attempting and pleading with Bioware to change this.

I’m a paying subscriber as mentioned and even I feel like I just got kicked in the teeth because they’re limiting the number of players who would otherwise join if it weren’t for the complete and utter baffling choice in restrictions. Even hide headslots are restricted. Why? Its a basic function of the game that should be standard to even those who didn’t have an account before.

Not allowing purple items? Fine. Limiting space missions? Okay. Limit number of chat channels? Its passable since most other MMOs do it. Mail restrictions? Now you’re pushing it. Limit to how much you can chat? Now I think we need to have a nice long talk Bioware.

I’d practically told her several times that I would wait for it to go F2P and she’d screech at me that it would never go F2P (Ha-ha). I hated it. I told her after after two hours of play that the game was nothing more but a WoW clone with Star Wars. I didn’t play it after that and I was seriously pissed off I’d wasted money on this.

For a game praised so highly for its story and writing, from what I’ve seen its absolutely atrocious. Twilight has better writing.

The choices for moral choice are something a 5 year old would think up. “Dark side” is poisoning a bunch of slaves so they die slowly but “light side” is poisoning a bunch of slaves so they die quickly? Less Cartooinishly Evil =/= Good.

And yeah, the F2P restrictions are insane.. its not F2P, it’s a long trial and if I wasn’t playing with someone, the game would become unplayable in short order and my partner, who’s subbed, is a quickly out leveling me.

All I can say is if I were still playing WoW, SWTOR sure wouldn’t have made me leave WoW for it and the F2P wouldn’t make me think about it.

This may be the first MMO Grinder I not only enjoyed, but also agreed with the majority of the review.

First off, THANK YOU for making some mention of what the role-players may be interested in. For me and many other players, one of the key factors to enjoying a MMORPG is role-playing and having the game support that. Without it, I could care less….barely.

SWTOR…really DOES feel like a single-player game. 90% of the content and all of the class storyline elements can be easily soloed. The only time you need other players are Group, Heroic and Flashpoint quests. With the exception of the Flashpoint quests, you will notice it gets harder and harder to find groups to finish them as you progress. Most players don’t bother with them, as the rewards are normally tame. There are some high-end Daily quests you can do for VERY good gear, but that’s around level 45-50.

To second another commenter here, the storyline and dialogue is just awful. There is a lot of it, it slows the pace to a crawl, the voice acting is bland and it’s as basic a story as you can get. Worse, the storyline has absolutely no effect to your character beyond getting your ship and a few items you’ll like have out leveled. It’s BORING and you will have no desire to do them again. Lastly, your choices make no difference In the story save collecting Light/Dark point for buying items later.

Let me give you a hint: the end story for the Jedi Knight is killing the Emperor. The end story for the smuggler is gaining complete control of the criminal underworld. Game effect? Nil. You gain no benefits, nothing changes in your play, the Emperor is back alive and Hutts still try to screw you. Even the companions get boring after a while, as all romance options lead to proposing marriage, which leads to off-scene sex…and then no more conversation options or quests.

All and all…this was a very average, mundane game with a Star Wars logo. Boring, expected, no innovation and quiet. Not worth your time or money.

As a trivia note, the Bioware debs were questioned several times about the species choices and limited character creation options. Their response? ‘People want to play humans, they don’t like playing characters that don’t appear human.’ ‘We don’t don’t feel that players will want to play a species (I.e. Wookies) that require subtitles.’ ‘ We wanted to control character dimensions so they would sync up better for the kissing scenes.’

Ummm…yeah…kissing is SO important in-game…..damnit I wanted a Wookie Jedi, you bastards!!!!

I started a trial account for this game to establish a maximum amount of non-restricted characters. It was even before the server merge, so a few had to have name changes as a result. I was enjoying the story for three or four classes and eagerly awaiting full free-to-play…

And when it did, I dropped it like a hot rock. Take away the side quickbars? Take away certain quest rewards? Lock out even taking my bloody helmet off? The relentless nickle-and-diming killed my interest and passion for the game within minutes; I deleted the game from my computer 72 hours later.

What little love I still have for the game is for the story content… and for that, I turn to Youtube. Hell, the player character of the Vette romance compilation looked more or less like my Sith Warrior anyway.
