City of Steam Beta Code Giveaway! – CLOSED, 10.0 out of 10 based on 4 ratings

Enter a world of industry and magic, a land of wonder and impossibility, & a city of steam.

Mark my words, City of Steam is a game that is going to really turns some heads over the course of the following year and not just because it is an independently developed and published Free to Play MMO. This is a game that oozes potential and has been described by BT’s resident MMO guru Oda Nobunaga in his preview of the game as “actually somewhat familiar in playstyle to the recently released Guild Wars 2 in places.” And I know how much you people love your Guild Wars 2. Additionally, BT regular ChaosD1 also had a lot of positive things to say when he looked at the game earlier this year in an episode of MMO Grinders Sidequest. Now we here at Blistered Thumbs are joining forces with developer/publisher Mechanist Games to give away 2000 closed beta keys for the game’s upcoming four-part closed beta test events.

CURRENT STATUS: CLOSED

These events will be running at various points from this Friday, November 16, through the end of December and will each reflect a different season in the world of City of Steams. The exact dates and names for the events are as follows:

Springtide (Nov. 16th to 20th)
Summercrest (Nov. 30th to Dec. 4th)
Autumnwane (Dec. 14th to 18th)
Winter Festival (Dec. 23 to 28th)

We will be giving away 500 keys for each of these events, starting today with keys for the November 16-20 Springtide event, and even better a key for one event also unlocks access to all other events as well. So if you get a key this around you are set for all four events and if not, then you can try again on the week of November 30 when we will be giving away keys for the Summercrest event. About City of Steam

So what is City of Steam? It’s a 3D industrial age fantasy MMORPG. The debut Unity3D-based MMO from Mechanist Games, it transports players to a world where clockworks, steam power, and arcane technologies suffuse every aspect of existence, from the half-organic, half-mechanical dwarves to the giant gears of the World Machine itself.

Key Features Include:
• Character and Weapon Customization – Weapon appearance changes when modded
• Branching Storylines – Choose the path your story will take
• Lightweight – No massive download or install required
• Full Featured – Content you’d expect from a AAA MMO, but all easily accessed from a browser
• Beautiful graphics and scenery
• 10 races, 4 classes, with more on the way
• Content for casual and hardcore gamers alike

History & Culture
City of Steam is set on the World Machine, a vast and ancient system of interlocking gears powered by unfathomable energies. Long ago, a race of ingenious conquerors called the Paragons sought to claim those energies for themselves, and destroyed themselves in the attempt. They left behind a shattered world and a complex legacy. Even now, millennia after the Era of Myth, that legacy continues to affect the course of history on the World Machine. To the races that already inhabited the mechanism – humans, goblins, orcs, and hobbes – they added the charismatic riven, insular draug, and half-mechanical dwarves. Life on the Mechanism has been revolutionized by the study of the Paragons’ lost technologies. Airships soar overhead, robotic steamtoilers patrol the streets, and great factories produce weapons wielded by heroes and villains alike. Four great human nations have emerged since the fall of the Paragons: the confederated city-states of the Heartlands, the allied kingdoms of Ostenia, the patriarchal Republic of Avenoss, and the harsh Empire of Stoigmar. At the site of the Paragons’ fall lay the City-State of Nexus, a once-great industrial center whose connection to the Era of Myth continues to attract attention from across the Mechanism. Rumor has it that something deep within Nexus has awakened – a secret that will change the world forever.

Player CLasses
During the Sneak Peek players will be able to choose from the following classes and 4 races: Draug, Riven, Aven and Goblin that were chosen by a player vote on the City of Steam forums.

Warder:
Heirs to an ancient martial tradition, Warders meet their opponents with righteous fury. They are united in a common focus on personal Duty, unflinching Leadership, and swift, punishing Judgment of enemies.

Arcanist:
Armed with state-of-the-art aetheric manipulators, the Arcanist wields the fury of the elements against any enemies foolish enough to approach. A variety of Fire, Ice, and Lightning abilities provide them with a wide array of tactical options.

Gunner:
Regardless of whether they stalk individual targets with the art of Sharpshooting, conjure occult effects with Trigger Magic, or utilize the varied abilities of Support Fire, Gunners prove that modern firearms have incredible potential on the battlefield.

Channeler:
Whether they draw from ancient Church hymnals or perform their own compositions, Channelers’ powerful melodies move the Mechanism to bring their allies into martial Harmony, restore them with Faith, and punish the unworthy with blinding Radiance.

Should we run out of keys, this page will be updated (along with the official BT twitter feed) so if you have any questions be sure to check back here. The official City of Steam website is the place to go for even more info on the game, not to mention a wide variety of pre-order packets with an equally wide variety of bonuses included for those interested. We look forward to seeing you all in Mechanism this Friday for all the steam-powered fun and action anyone can handle. Stay tuned to BT for even more coverage of City of Steam in the weeks ahead and as always be sure to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

I’m half tempted to enter the contest just because I want to play it. Not sure I’d be a good Beta tester though, it’s hard for me to separate Beta Testing from Early Demo.

I think I’ll wait for open Beta, and let other people who are more serious about testing try the game.

You can come in to just play and offer suggestions/feedback, too. Despite being a “Test”, it’s not just for finding bugs (though that helps immensely to improve it for Open Beta :P )

Certainly looks interesting. I’d love to see a decent game that has a setting besides “Generic Fantasy”
