Rumor: XCOM Screenshots and Survey May Reveal More about Troubled Game, 7.0 out of 10 based on 3 ratings

Mass Effect: 1960.

With only a week to go before XCOM: Enemy Unknown is unleashed upon an excited fanbase, it’s only fitting that some new information would appear about that other XCOM game. The screenshots in question, which were provided by a Kotaku user, come from an alleged survey by 2K Games Marin to test the marketability of the shooter.

In addition to screenshots which seem to suggest the title will be a third-person shooter, as opposed to the first-person shooter it was originally teased as, the survey also tells a bit more about the game. The survey states that the game is being made by the same development team that worked on Bioshock 2, will be available on the 360 and PS3, and asks if the survey taker would prefer a $30 downloadable version instead of a $60 retail release.

After hours of interrogation, the agent determines that this man might be from out of town.

Now, 2K games has denied releasing any new information on the game and refuses to make comments regarding the survey. So, what are your thoughts? Do these new screenshots and the possibility of a cheaper downloadable title interest you? This game isn’t just a betrayal….it’s freakin’ blasphemy it is.

“BETRAYAL” turns into “Oh thank fuck, they have finally seen the light”.

They wanted to turn XCOM into a Fallout 3/Bioshock variant
without doing the market research, and it turned around and bit them on their collective bottom’s.

The first screen shot looks like what the ghost busters would have been like if they were born twenty or so years earlyer.

    30 dollars. Hmm.

Well.. let’s look at it this way, and I apologize for the rather crude analogy in advance.

Dogs like eating. Dogs, if hungry enough (malnurished in particular) will eat their own shit. However, if you instead present to a dog a T-bone steak, I’m certain the dog will have a preference.

That’s basically what we’ve run into with this title & the nearly released “X-com Enemy Unknown” – that’s your T-bone steak, which leaves the other title to be… well – I’m sure we’ve all figured that one out already. On that note – since I have a title that will not only satisfy my franchise lust for an X-com game & will provide an undoubtedly better gaming experience, I’m not interested in paying any amount for our canine generated ‘treat’.

After playing the Firaxis demo, I hope the guys responsible for this design cry themselves to sleep at night.

    Just… change the name.

Why do you NEED it to have that name?!?

You can release any old crap under any other title.

As for the idea of it being a cheaper, downloadable release… I’d have to give that a big negative. Being unemployed, I am certainly not made of money, and if I had $30 to throw away, I’d rather do it on an old classic game (or multiple) I missed that I would want in my collection. I have better things to spend my money on, especially considering I can get quite a few great games on GOG for cheaper.

    OH GOD, THIS ‘X-COM’ GAME…

What do I have to say about it? Well… They’re trying really hard to make it a Mass Effect knockoff despite calling it a ‘Tactical Shooter’. Newsflash, Mass Effect is both hardly tactical and nowhere near what you want any X-COM game to be like. I’d imagine a true X-COM tactical shooter to be quite badass, though. Imagine a squad-based Tactical shooter X-COM game where your normal planning preparations were the X-COM norm (research, hiring staff, developing and producing new weapons) but the missions played like Irrational Games’ SWAT 4 or Ubisoft’s earlier Rainbow Six entries.

SWAT 4 especially was a very creepy game in its own right, without the unknown threat of aliens, and SWAT 4′s style of randomized map layouts each time would also work damn well in an X-COM game. Irrational should be working on this instead and they’d make it so much better, but I guess they’re busy with BioShock Infinite, and I don’t see anyone chomping at the bit to hire me as a design consultant, so I guess they’re complacent with the piece of crap they’ve got…

…And dear lord, is it looking like a trainwreck here…

Ever since I played original Rainbow Six all those years ago I have wanted an X-Com game with that kind of tactical squad action, combined with researching and everything else necessary for a X-Com game. It would be fricking amazing!

I know right?!? It seems like an absolute no-brainer to me! But instead of using Rainbow Six 1, Rogue Spear, Rainbow Six 3, or SWAT 4 as an influence for this ‘tactical shooter’ XCOM, they pick Mass Effect and Gears of War…

I mean… WHAT?!? Who would call those tactical shooters?

I know I’m being the cynic here, but I don’t think this game is going to see the light of day. If it does, it will be a complete mess.
