Wii 25-in-25: The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword

At this point, what can be said about The Legend of Zelda series? This Nintendo stalwart has been compared to the Lord of the Rings of video games, or even the Godfather of interactive adventures. The gameplay and storyline are practically timeless, following classic tropes that deliver an experience that is enchanting despite its familiarity. I can wax nostalgic over Zelda as a series any day of the week, and discuss how Link is emblematic of the hero’s journey, but in regards to Skyward Sword, Nintendo was able to do it again, to create something unique yet familiar in the universe that will no doubt stand the test of time with its green-clad brethren.

It is fitting that on the 25th anniversary of the Zelda franchise, we go back to the beginning of the now official timeline with Skyward Sword, as we see the first incarnation of Link above Skyloft, a floating city amongst the clouds. Of course, tragedy strikes when the self-titled Demon Lord Ghirahim shows himself and starts terrorizing the world below Skyloft, including kidnapping Link’s childhood friend Zelda by using dark magic.

The story and pattern of the game is timeless, as I said, because of how it is told. Simple and effective like every adventure title out there, you traverse complex and beautiful dungeons littered with puzzles and weapons that help you do battle against the dark forces of Ghirahim, eventually fighting larger than life bosses to quell the evil for good. For many, this tired but true gameplay of Zelda has become irksome to the point of deep cynicism, but the trick to any good Zelda game is to know how to change your world without changing much in-between.

For Skyward Sword, it is both the controls and the use of the Loftwing. The controls have been revamped to map to the Wii Remote fully, allowing Link to finally slice and dice enemies with precise motions by the player. The change is rather subtle, allowing a progression of skill to be the bearer of success over quick button smashing. It also becomes an exercise for strategic striking, as enemies and bosses can be damaged by only one version of attack. So mastering horizontal, vertical, or thrusting sword strikes becomes a valuable key in Link’s arsenal.

But perhaps the most overt change is the use of Loftwing, your feathered companion among the clouds. Using Loftwing to fly, dive, and glide in the open air with ease just allows you to marvel at the majestic beauty of both Skyloft and Hyrule below you. Floating islands, hidden grottos, and far-reaching forests are just some of the areas you will explore in this wide, open space. Not since the Great Ocean in Wind Waker has a Zelda game felt so open and alive, allowing you to revel at the impressionist-inspired art style that director Hidemaro Fujibayashi ordered for.

So really, what else can be said other than having a solid Zelda experience to fall in love with again. As non-complicated as the storyline and progression are, the journey to each dungeon, and the actions the player take, is what keeps us going back to replay this myth in many forms. This is what makes Skyward Sword, and the Zelda series as a whole, memorable.

I don’t care what anyone says, but for all its flaws, I love this game. Yes, I have my fair share of problems with it, namely the management of items, especially when it comes to how many arrows and bombs you can hold, but there are so many things about this game I like. I’ll admit that I can’t love Wind Waker as much as other people do because my controller was infuriating, but I’m hoping that should it cover come to the Wii U Virtual Console, I can be more willing to understand.

Skyward Sword had decent dungeons, good boss fights and pretty good art direction and music, but everything else was middling to poor. But as I understand it, they were focusing more on the combat engine, and they plan on reusing it in the next game. It doesn’t excuse Skyward Sword’s quality, but it does leave hope for the future.

While not quite my favorite entrant in the series I loved Skyward Sword quite a lot! It found a good balance between having a large world a-la Wind Waker while keeping it small enough that the unimaginative cretins-I mean people whose mindsets differ from mine and who didn’t enjoy Wind Waker’s over-world still found it fun.

The only part that really pissed me off was that water level that asked me to collect those notes/tadpoles.

This was an enjoyable game and a worthy addition to the franchise. Unfortunately, I can’t see the series progressing much after this point, sticking to tried-and-true mechanics instead of trying out very different things.

Best case scenario: Nintendo creates a Zelda game with a living, breathing world ala Assassin’s Creed.

Worst case scenario: Disney buys Nintendo and and throws Zelda (and perhaps Link, too) in their “Disney Princess” brand. It’d be nothing but cute puzzle and platform games from then on! (Hell, they just bought Lucasfilm and Marvel Comics, so why not Nintendo?)

I really hate to say this, but I don’t feel Skyward Sword is a very good game.
In fact, it’s my least favorite 3D Zelda, which is a shame, as it had SO MUCH potential.

The opening of the game, while slow as molasses, had some potential in the cutscene department, teasing the beginning of a more involved plot. But the second you go off to search for Zelda, that feeling is gone until the ending cutscene, which is a real shame.

The overworld, aside from the City of Skyloft itself, feels incredibly empty. While “Not since the Great Ocean in Wind Waker has a Zelda game felt so open and alive” may be true, the open part is the problem here.
I didn’t like the Great Ocean because it felt tedious to get anywhere for the majority of the game. And while the world above the clouds does improve a lot on that department, it also has way less interesting things to explore.

And while above they have the great emptyness, the areas on the ground don’t feel like a Zelda overworld with lots of things to explore and find, but more like dungeons that lack roofs. Some might like that, but I’m missing the freedom of going off on my own.

Straying into Gerudo Valley as young Link, just to see whats there, then gliding – hanging off a chicken – to a heartpiece just to end up in Lake Hylia is a kind of experience that was severely lacking in Skyward Sword.

There’s also a few questionable monster/character designs in the game. These are entirely personal taste, so I won’t harp on them for long. I do want to mention how incredibly stupid the Imprisoned looks the second he grows legs. When you see him in Link’s dream without any hint of arms or legs he actually looks pretty cool IMO.

Anyways, the by far biggest gripe I have with Skyward Sword is that it thinks it’s playerbase is rock stupid.
Yes, I realize the game was made for kids.
But by making Phai the developers created a plague that was a bazillion times more annoying than Navi ever was.

Enter a new area? “Master, I’ll tell you everything you need to know. Yes, you just saw what you need in the introductory cutscene, but please let me repeat what you could just see onscreen in as many words and textboxes as possible.”

Have a cutscene? “Master, let me give you a retelling of what that person just said to you, just spelled out in a way that even your non-existend dog would know what to do next.”

Wii-Mote battery low? “Master, let me beep very annoyingly until you give up and press the hint button. So I can come up and tell you in the s l o w e s t p o s s i b l e
u n s k i p p a b a b l e t e x t s p e e d that your Wii-Remote is about to run out. And with about to run out I mean in one to three hours of playtime. Oh, and did I mention the beep will return the second you leave the area? What, there’s a symbol on the bottom of the screen to inform you about the battery life? Nah, I don’t think you understand that. ”

Solved a puzzle that shows you in a cutscene exactly what happened and really everybody realizes what they have to do next? “Master, I am not entirely sure about this, but it seems that Z just happened. We should try using X on the Z that just happened at Y. To get there, pass through A and B. Which is the only way to go anyways.”

    Worst. Sentient. Sword. EVER.
You know, in Baldur’s Gate 2 the description of the talking blade Lilacor jokes about how most adventurers can’t take it’s rants for long and throw it away.
That’s how I started to feel towards slightly after being about halfway through Skyward Sword.

It doesn’t help that the game gives you the exact description for every little collectable every first time you get it in a session either. I already didn’t like that Twilight Princess but that game at least had a likeable companion that knew when to shut up.

Anyways, even after this entirely way to long rant on Skyward Sword, I do not think it is a bad game. It’s just very bleh compared to most other Zelda games. And had a lot of great ideas not fully thought through. Missed opportunities always hurt alot.

That said, I still enjoy letting Link fall onto the ground after a nice, long skydive every once in a while. That animation just never gets old.

Also, how the f*** did I manage to write THIS much? Feels good to have that rant out of my system though.

I don’t think this game holds up, but that has nothing to do with it being another Zelda game. It has to do with the game being sub-par in almost every category.

A paper-thin, barely present plot, populated by characters who are original only if you’ve never seen a japanese anime before and who never expand beyond those stereotypes. A complete lack of significant tension, urgency, or drama.

Gameplay that has no learning curve and is fundamentally broken. Blatantly repeated enemies, bosses, and activities, and unashamed busywork that contributes nothing to the plot.

Fantastic art-style, ruined by animations ripped straight from the nineties. Well orchestrated music brought down by similarly outdated sound design. Creative gameplay elements that are overused to the point of banality.

There is not enough breath in me to describe how shallow and overrated this game is.

You know, some games with long histories sometimes get a special treatment in small ways, like a book highlighting its successes or a re-release of the original title commemorating the anniversary. You got to hand it to Nintendo though; when they want to give you something, they go all out!

I’m a little disappointed to see a BT review following the trend set by every other reviewer. Granted, I don’t expect a font of wisdom dripping from each and every word, but I find myself genuinely let-down by the level of generic here.

Every other reviewer and their dog has pitched in about how good SS is, but the ones that do invariably use the same tired language.

“expressing himself in a way not seen since Wind Waker”
“deeper characters than previous Zelda games”
“works far better than the previous system”

Comparing a game to its previous iteration is a given, but comparing it SOLELY to that is not. It’s clear that you hold this game to the standards of Zelda games only, and not to games as a whole.

For instance, I’m guessing, since they were your listed cons, that the hit and miss graphics and motion plus implementation are the main reason this game got a 9/10. I can infer, then, that you thought that the story deserved full marks.

How deep are these characters, as shown in this game, compared to other games? How interesting is this narrative, compared to other games? How meaningful are your choices, compared to other games?

The answer? Not very. Groose, a character you wink at in this review, is a paper cut-out in comparison, who spends literally half of the game crying a corner, and the other half developing off-screen. Groose is not a well-handled character, except in the context of Zelda games, which have traditionally had weakly-developed characters.

Skyward Sword is fun, for a bit. But it is sorely lacking in more areas than one, and definitely doesn’t deserve the label of “an utter triumph in entertainment.” Quality is subjective, and you’re free to your opinion, but the criteria on which you base your opinion, how it measures up to Other Zelda games, leaves this review pretty useless.
