Now with Kid Pix lettering!

GameStop is looking to corner the kiddie market this holiday season with the release of GameStop Kids. Yes, you read that right, we’re talking about kid-themed stores carrying E-rated games and game merchandise aimed for children, including toys. What is not to love?!

The first store has already opened in Grapevine Mills Mall in Texas, and GameStop is planning to release 80 more stores this holiday season by November 15th. GameStop is definitely confident in the decision to create children-themed stores, apparently a plan that was conceived by the company roughly eight months ago, according to CEO Paul Raines. Raines is also very confident that the new strategy by GameStop will be a winning one, so he can show those pesky toy stores a thing or two this holiday season. “This is really a way for us to take share away from people who are in the toy business and have an expanded assortment,” Raines said, “and show people how to drive kids to new experiences, new products or an expanded assortment of existing products like Skylanders and Angry Birds.”

Despite the rather arrogant statements by Raines, the idea is not totally insane. After all, a themed store based out of a GameStop could work if they have the right demographic targeted. If GameStop Kids catches on and sees expansion to several of the 4,500 stores across America we might see more specialty stores carrying vintage games in the future.

Who am I kidding though? In the end, this is an idea that could be good, but will likely be poorly executed and abandoned by GameStop in the end.

I actually really like this idea. I can’t say it’ll be sucessful, but I think it would be good to split game-stops in to two stores. Not only would it reduce the number of stupid shit kids in Gamestop, it would give Normal Gamestop a pretty simple “We don’t sell to unattended kids” enforcement policy, since they could put all the “Kids” games in the other store.

I think the idea has a certain degree of merit. Parents who don’t know their ass from their elbow when it comes to discerning what an ESRB rating means can easily go in, buy basically anything, and it’s been pre-approved by Gamestop to be kid-friendly.

This store will vastly reduce the number of annoying underage kids online I hope. Parents will only take them to this store, and they can’t get their Call of Duties here.

But if that fails, at least I have a place to get Plush Yoshi Dolls.

I can sense the futility in your typing. This is something you wish but will never get. (I wish it too)

I really don’t see the point of this. Everything that they would sell is already in normal gamestops, the only thing this does is add superfluous video game themed toys and I guess this might be a cool thing if you don’t live next to a local Toys R’ Us.

I live in the mystical Layton filled land of the UK, so this decision doesn’t affect me but it’s a nice idea. I hate children due to the way they treated me when I was a child, and if all the little shits can go to a Kid-friendly store, that leaves us more mature people to play our Mario’s and Kirby’s in peace without all that “omgurd Black Cops! Mum! I want it! All my fwends! have it ! garjkleklwelk323!!!!!111!!”!”

Kids are stupid, I was in a game store once and this little shit grabbed a luigi plush toy and said “Look Mum! This is TJ! He’s Mario’s’ friend.”

I believe this is fueled almost exclusively by the Skylanders boom. When Skylanders drop out of favor these stores will need a new fad or they’ll quickly be converted into normal Gamestops or shut down altogether. But I can see how this might be attractive to parents, whenever I see a kid in Gamestop they’re always grabbing Gears of War or Batman Arkham City and the parents have to say no because the games are obviously too violent for little kids.
