“Outlast” the Horror from Creators of Assassin’s Creed & Uncharted, 10.0 out of 10 based on 1 rating

That’s never a good sign.

Red Barrels is a new game studio headed up by David Chateauneuf, Philippe Morin, and Hugo Dallaire, all of whom worked with Ubisoft on headline franchises like Prince of Persia and Splinter Cell. They may have named their unit after the ubiquitous explosives, but their first project is a first-person horror title called Outlast.

The game follows independent journalist Miles Upshur on a trip up to the remote mountains of Colorado and into the Mount Massive Asylum. It’s a well-worn trope to be sure, but the team is promising a “fear-based emotional rollercoaster” that will separate it from your average haunted madhouse tale. More information will be released on October 30th.

Outlast is scheduled to release on Steam next Summer.

I’m worried that it’s going to have a lot of scripted sequences like Uncharted or Assassin’s Creed where there’s not much fear because you know that every situation is made with a way for you to escape. Like how every other hand-hold when you’re climbing in Uncharted breaks but Drake always manages to find some other way to scramble to safety. I’m not asking for cheap deaths, I just want it so every time something attacks you it’s not part of some set piece.

For a genre that Capcom so proudly states is dead, there certainly seems to be a lot of actual horror, not bro-shooters masquerading as horror, titles coming out these days.

It’s almost like the horror genre is fine.. and Capcom just has their head so far up their collective ass that they’ll never see the light of day again.

Well Ubisoft has at least something of a track record for gameplay matching the desired mood, so here’s to hoping they actually succeed.
