My Little Pony Game is Set to Bring the Adorkableness to Mobile Devices, 5.3 out of 10 based on 4 ratings

Ponyville beckons.

A My Little Pony game has been in development for mobile devices by Gameloft, one of the masters of these platforms, for some time and now it seems the release of this title will come just in time for the hour-long third season premiere of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic set to air November 10. With that date fast approaching, it only makes sense that footage and details of said game have started to slip out and the picture they paint is of a game that will be familiar to many – for good and ill. That is because at its core, the MLP game will follow the now well established city building formula that has taken the mobile market by storm in recent years. The question then is this: will this game have enough unique elements to allow it to stand out from a crowd that includes countless similar games staring everyone from the Men in Black to The Simpsons and beyond?

Without having actually played the game myself, I cannot say for certain one way or the other but there are at least some promising signs for the game, at least as far as the diverse demographic that constitutes the show fans are concerned. For one thing, the people at Gameloft have clearly approached the game with a better than decent level of familiarity with FiM. So not only does the game seek to recreate the visual style of the show, it also goes so far as to include new arrangements of many of the most popular music from the series as well. Another aspect of the game that will come across as promising to fans, particularly those of the older set, is just how all-in the people at Gameloft seem to be in regards to including references sure to make these very fans squee. Check out the below screenshot for proof of just how far down the rabbit hole this game is prepared to travel:

The Dude abides. I don’t know about you but I take comfort in that. It’s good knowin’ he’s out there. Takin’ ‘er easy for all us sinners.

Why yes those are Pony versions of characters from The Big Lebowski and yes they are taken directly from the show. And that is only a few of the ultimately 46 ponies that will be available when the game launches with the promise of more to come down the line. Every pony will have their own unique set of animations and some will even make use of voice work taken directly from the show as well. Nor are they just there for cosmetic purposes either since the ponies players unlock or purchase will play into a number of gameplay elements. These will range from the city-building that lies at the heart of the game and extends all the way to the three mini-games that will be included with the game at release. Speaking of mini-games, Gameloft also intends to expand the number of mini-games available at various points post-launch). Indeed, the developers at Gameloft in a recent interview with Game Informer promised that “We have tons of ideas that will really add to the core release experience.” Another excerpt from that interview that will likely be of interest to fans of the show, along with screenshots and footage of the game in action, follows below.

Q: Why do you think My Little Pony appeals to such a wide audience?

I guess some of it is partly due to the nostalgia for the original show and toys of the ‘80s, but no one can deny that the new cartoon, Friendship is Magic, has done incredibly well. It’s extremely well-written for what could initially be perceived as a TV show just for little girls. I think the strength of Friendship is Magic is that the creators didn’t forget that parents will watch it with their children; keeping that in mind has really made the show appeal to adults, whether they’re parents or not. We’ve really tried to capture that same vibe with our game, so I hope that fans and newcomers alike will appreciate it as well.

Perhaps my biggest personal concern is the way the game will monetize aspects of its gameplay because for all that such an approach is more or less the norm these days for games of these types, some do a better job with it than others. Hopefully this title will be one of the ones that strike a decent balance; time will tell. Gameloft’s My Little Pony mobile game arrives for iOS and Android devices on November 8 with a release to Google Play promised for soon after. Those 3d models aren’t looking very good when they turn towards the camera. Just look at Rarity in that screenshot.

The scary bile-spewers haven’t commented here yet? Good, YAY PONIES! I don’t own an iPhone at the moment, but this looks like a pretty promising game and something I might want to try it out when I get my hands on an iOS device. It’s good to see not every interesting MLP game with potential to it is fan-made anymore.

No. As I said in the article, the game is coming to all iOS platforms along with Android ones as well initially with a Google Play release planned to follow soon after.

hmmmm. A, what looks to be, simcity style game but with mlp and minigames. It looks to be ok for what it is and who it’s catering to, but I think it may turn out to be as fun as farmville. aka not very and only serves as a time eater when you have nothing better to do. Coming from a brony, I like what their trying to do, but it doesn’t look too interesting when there are similar games out there already.

The only thing this makes me wonder is…where’s ponified Walter? Someone has to explain what happens “when you find a stranger in the Alps”, lol
