MMO Grinder: Tribes: Ascend,
Gotta go fast! Grab your jetpack and ski downhill while you fire your explosive frisbees! Chaos looks into Tribes: Ascend by Hi-Rez Studios! Is this a faithful adaptation of Tribes 2, and a worthy successor of the franchise? I don’t know, I never played it, but let’s look at this one anyway!

Oh wow I didn’t know this came from EarthSiege series! I was on a Mechwarrior high and looking for other big mech games until I found this series.
According to wiki, Mechwarrior 1 came out first, then the first Earth Siege, then Mechwarrior 2. But I didn’t know about Earth Siege until I finished Mechwarrior 2.
Okay I’ll watch the rest of your video now
if you are new to tribes i would agree that game might seem fast pased and it is alot faster than what you get with any CoD game. i find it once you gotten into the grove of the game that is acutally a game of timing and prestion rather than speed.
sure going fast is improtant for your survival but waiting to fire a spinfuser shot when you know you will hit is just so much more since a good 2-3 shots kills any medium or light armor guy.
Love the bloopers
Gonna have to correct you on something. The in game voice command shortcuts were created by Epic in the original Unreal Tournament. Hi-res have simply enhanced it to make it even easier to use.
Speaking of UT, I pity the newer generation that missed out on the Arena FPS era. They just have no idea what they’re coming into, with the super-fast combat and weapons that aren’t insta-hit, and the fact that opponents won’t go down with just a couple of shots. Those of us who played UT and Quake back in the day will feel right at home once we’ve gotten used to skiing.
Since you expect people to ask you to review TF2, I’m gonna go ahead and surprise you by suggesting Blacklight Retribution, which has progression and therefore is fair game.
The playstyle is very similar to CoD, though in a futuristic setting which among other stuff includes big-ass mechs and HRV (Hyper Reality Visors) which give you a sort of digital vision that allows you to see the entire level and everyone in it though the walls for a couple seconds. It’s a core mechanic of the game, since it allows you to spot cloaked players and the randomly placed weak spots of the mechs, the catch being that you are completely defenseless throughout its duration.
I’d love to hear your thoughts on your marketplace. It basically allows you to rent premade guns or even parts to customize whatever you have for fair prices, but if you want to own something permanently your only option is to buy the parts seperately and the asking prices are abysmal (something like 5$ for a muzzle if you use ZEN which is the real money currency).
The community I’ve encountered so far has been friendly and helpful with silly (in the good way) chat mostly taking place in the lobbies.
And before I forget, concerning the after credits scene, I believe the proper in-game “insult” is “sandraker” for Blood Eagle -> Diamond Sword and “butcher” for Diamond Sword -> Blood eagle. Cause “sworder” sounded kinda awkward.
And that concludes the pointless geeky trivia of the week.
Umm, that was a direct quote from the game. Well, “Make the sworders pay for their treachery.” is the actual quote. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVircQzK9VM
Well, huh. I guess it’s been a while since I decided to cover my gameplay with podcasts.
Ignore my second post then. Come to think of it, I probably heard that in one of TB’s episodes and assumed it was directly from the game. I’m 100% sure about the “butchers” part though.
I never found this game all that chaotic or that ‘fast’ sure you zip around on hoverboots and fly through the air, but UT2K4 was faster paced, as well as Quake Live considering how quick you can jump, rocket jump bounce off a wall and kill 3 people in 2 seconds.
To me the game was slow, sure I could hover fast on the ground but the need to lead your shots by a lot, and just the ho-hum of ski here, shoot some guys mid-air, move along, just wasn’t all that amazing to me. It’s not bad game by any means but trying to say “Most difficult shooter. Ever.” (their website saying this) is hardly the case once you learn how to lead shots.
The cash shop to me seems alright. As far as an MMO goes, sure there’s level progression, but it’s there for BF3 and CoD for upgrades and unlocks. I guess being F2P and having a Cash Shop would be the better turn to look for the MMO title. Not a big deal.
Anyway it’s okay but I find myself leaving this game months at a time for other shooters or just games in general.
Yet another game I’d love to check out if I had the hardware for it. Anyway, good review. Bonus points for the hilarious Cristopher Walken impression at the end.
