Hmmm, Planetside eh? Basically a giant FPS thinly disguised as a MMO, Planetside removes most of the elements that go with a MMORPG (such as a large amount of character creation options, story, quests, crafting, guild support, etc) in favor of constantly blowing things up. It is, in essense, a very expensive Battlefield game. I played the first Planetside in beta and for about 2 months after and MAN did it get boring quick. So far, the beat for P2 is about the same.
On a side note…say ‘ChaosD1′, I’ve noticed that you tend to focus on the solo gameplay aspects of MMORPGs and not so much on…well…role-playing. It’s only resently that game producers have started dropping the RPG section in their titles, but as MMORPGs were originally CREATED to be role-playing games…do you think that maybe that aspect should get a bit of attention? I say this mainly because I feel you skimp on a lot of areas that matter to me far more than the soundtrack (which I regularly mute or replace with my own) or how the quest system works (which can change in about 2-3 months). Also, a lot of attention is given to cash shops…which in my experience few players care about. I think you are a decent reviewer, but unfortunately I don’t use your reviews as a basis to what I will look at or play…or even as a opinion for others…due to their focus on aspect that honestly don’t appeal to anyone I know.
And yet another person falls into the trap of thinking that *ALL* MMO games are RPGs. This is not a “giant FPS thinly disguised as a MMO”, this is an MMOFPS. Of course there is no questing, crafting and other such trappings of an MMORPG, because this *isn’t* one. There is character progression and guild support however, but of the sort that comes with an FPS rather than an RPG, because, you know, that’s what the game IS.
I’m an avid roleplayer and I’ll be the first to admit that nearly NOBODY roleplays in MMORPGS lately. I came from one of the most prominent RP servers in World of Warcraft, and watched that server, and eventually that game crumble into nothing more than a grindfest numbers game filled with text speak and memes, where Roleplayers and those who bother to type sentences in full are mocked incessantly, forcing the RP community to speak only in party chat, like secret societies.
If I came across a game with an active and open RP community (Like I mentioned in City of Heroes) I’d remark on it, but sadly, more than often, it’s just NOT there. I even remark on games with a TON of RP potential not being utilized in the slightist. (See Aion.)
Trust me. There’s a reason I have a poster of my WoW character behind me, and the fact I remake and use similar names for characters in every MMO I look at.
Frame rate is a problem in the beta but the devs are always talking to the community and improving on the points that the community don’t like. The game is also worth a try at least.
This is unquestionably true.
There was a major change made to the base taking system, done in the midst of my playing it. Originally, all you had to do was blow the generator with a weapon or C4 charge. It was pretty quick and simple to take a base. Now the generator is impervious to weaponry, and you need to hole E next to it to start an “overload” sequence forcing it to self destruct. Once started, you have to defend the point or enemies will be able to stop the overload sequence. It’s a much more “fair” approach, considering how long it takes to repair these things.
Blowing the generator is considered a big no no in PS1. It shows what a cheap player you are, and that you’re not willing to actually take the base. While some may argue that the object is the take the base, the playerbase considers this a major infraction, and you will actually get camped from your own faction for doing such things. The only reason for even going near the generator is if you’re trying to take an interlink facility or the fight has been going for 2-3 hours without any advancement.
Something else you didn’t cover is the size of the maps and the size of the factions. I’m not sure of the projected PS2 numbers, but on PS1…you could be on a population locked continent, at one base, with 399 players total. It basically was a giant swarm of players all trying to fight for their piece. Multitudes of tanks, aircraft, engineering deployables, ground vehicles, snipers, cloakers (think rogues in WoW), heavy infantry, light infrantry, medium infantry, turret fire, bombs dropping, mortars, space tech, max units, etc etc. All firing on this base or defending it. This review doesn’t do the scope or potential of the game justice at all.
@GiftoftheMagi
The beta was nothing like the actual game. You missed 9 years of amazing gameplay, and I feel sorry that you didn’t get to experience that.
This isn’t a review. It’s a first impressions video. All Sidequests are. I’m not sure how people keep missing that, considering it’s the first thing I say in all of them.
Not gonna lie, I’m rather looking forward to this game.
So.. its Modern Warfare 3 in space and a persistent world?
No, it’s Battlefield 3 in space and a persistent world, Modern Warfare 3 has no vehicles. =P
On another note, this game looks fascinating. I’ve always wanted a PvP based FPSMMO that was an ACTUAL MMO, and not just a lobby based game with small maps, and with the sci-fi setting, I think I might have to check it out.
