Dragon Quest VII Remake Headed to the 3DS,
The latest issue of Shonen Jump in Japan has brought with it some Dragon Quest news that in the context of the overall series is actually not really that surprising. What news? Namely that Dragon Quest VII, originally released on the PlayStation back in 2000, will be joining previous DQ titles I-VI in getting an enhanced portable remake. This is a trend that goes all the way back to Dragon Quest (nee Warrior in the US) I & II for GameBoy Color and most recently occurred with the release of Dragon Quest VI: Realms of Revelation for DS last year. So the precedence is certainly there. Actual details about the DQVII remake remain scant for the moment. We know that it will be a 3DS title, will be a full 3D remake that significantly updates the 3D graphics of the original among other things, and will include StreetPass support that will allow players to exchange what are being dubbed lithographs.
While DQVII was of course the first DQ game to actually get a US release (under the moniker of Dragon Warrior VII) since the release of Dragon Quest IV in North America in 1992, it was also a game with some real problems. For one, the graphics struck an odd balance between the style of old titles and the newer advancements just starting to make their way through the industry. Even more importantly, the gameplay was a little too much of a throwback to the older titles, right down to forcing players to access a menu in order to move up and down stairs.
There was a good game at core the of Dragon Quest VII and I am hopeful that a remake will bring that core to the forefront while leaving behind weaker elements of original. Certainly that was the case with the other portable remakes and I have no doubt this one area will history will repeat itself. Dragon Quest VII for 3DS is currently set for release in Japan in February 2013. A US release has yet to be confirmed but seems likely in light of recent portable successes for the series. Stay tuned to Blistered Thumbs for continuing coverage of the game and be sure to share your thoughts and opinions in the comments section below.

Here’s the real question: Is Level 5 developing this remake? If so (and the game gets localized) I’ll definitely get a 3DS just for this game. No lies!
Edit: Looks like ArtePiazza is developing the title.
Color me interested. Of course, I’d be even more interested if Squeenix re-released a certain other game ending in 7…
…That or it’s predecessor, I’d really like to see them give that one a 3DS tune-up.
A friend of mine played this on his PSOne. I was always curious about it, wondering if it was right for me. Unfortunately the graphics were so horrible I could barely stand them (one reason why I haven’t played a lot of PSOne games). If the graphics are improved on the 3DS, then I’ll definitely get DQ7.
Oh, and another thing: My friend said he got stuck in the game due to a glitch. There was no way he could proceed in a dungeon and no way he could go back to a safe place. I dunno, maybe he didn’t try hard enough … or maybe game-breaking glitches were always a danger in the days before downloadable patches.
God I really hope this gets released here in the States, this is my favorite game in the series, I’m a sucker for time travel.
I can’t imagine this will have steps taken to actually improve the game (for example, chopping 50 hours out of it) so I feel confident saying this’ll get a pass from me.
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I don’t think you ever use the Stairs command in the menu Dragon Quest VII. That’s something that was gotten rid of early in the series.
Eh… I really wish one of my favorite RPG series was not condemned to being on handhelds now. Guess this ensures the PS1 game won’t be showing up on the PSN.
*Raises eyebrow* http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dragon_Quest_X Yeah. So there is that.
Maybe he doesn’t want to play a MMO DQ which forces you to be online and has a subscription fee?
It may be far off, but who knows what the state of DQ XI will be.
