Disney Buys Lucasfilm for $4 billion, LucasArts Included in Deal, 10.0 out of 10 based on 3 ratings

Disney CEO Bob Iger and the one and only George Lucas make entertainment history.

That sound you heard earlier was the collective noise generated by millions of jaws hitting the floor all within a close period of time. That is because news has now broken that The Walt Disney Company has officially acquired Lucasfilm lock, stock, and barrel for four billion dollars. Yes, that Disney and yes, that Lucasfilm. Basically, Disney now owns everything Star Wars and Indiana Jones related and has confirmed that Episodes VII, VIII, and IX are already in production with plans for Star Wars: Episode 7 to arrive in 2015. Oh, and George Lucas will not have creative control of these films or the Star Wars property as a whole for that matter going forward. I will just let all that settle in for a sec before we continue, shall I?

If I may interject amidst all the thoughts of Disney replacing Jar Jar with Goofy in remastered versions of the Prequels or a WII-set movie featuring Indiana Jones and Captain America teaming up (now possible since Disney also owns Marvel as well, for those of you who may have forgotten) likely filling your heads, the question remains: What does this mean on the video game side of things? While it will likely be sometime before the full effects of this deal can truly be sussed out, some information has already become available.

For one thing, it has been confirmed that ownership of LucasArts and all of its associated properties were included as a part of this deal. In regards to currently announced projects from the company such as Star Wars 1313, a LucasArts representative commented that “For the time being all projects are business as usual. We are excited about all the possibilities that Disney brings”. As for what Disney might do going forward with Star Wars or Indiana Jones, not mention beloved yet otherwise long dormant properties such as Grim Fandango or Full Throttle, in terms of video games, Disney CEO Robert Iger had the following to say:

Robert Iger, Disney CEO
We’re likely to focus more on social and mobile than we are on console. We’ll look opportunistically at console, most likely in licensing rather than publishing, but we think that given the nature of these characters and how well known they are, and the storytelling, that they lend themselves quite nicely, as they’ve already demonstrated to the other platforms.

Make of that what you will. Personally, I have got my fingers crossed that we see Star Wars in Kingdom Hearts 3 along with the next Pirate of the Caribbean movie featuring appearances from a certain mighty pirate and his demonic skull friend. Oh the possibilities… Stay tuned to Blistered Thumbs for continuing coverage of this major entertainment story and be sure to share your thoughts, opinions, and wild speculations/hopes & dreams in the comments section below.

This might be the best thing for Star Wars. Lucas has been doing nothing for the franchise and spits on the expanded universe (despite it being handled by people far more dedicated to the lore).

This is a chance for people with honest love for Star Wars to get behind the helm of new movies and the like.

I remember when Star Wars first came out, the comics were published by Marvel. Who knows? Maybe we will finally see Luke Skywalker team up with Spider-Man, or Indiana Jone meet up with Captain America.

But please, for the love of God, NO HOWARD THE DUCK!!

I’m just happy to see the Star Wars movie franchise out of the hands of crazy George before he can do any more harm to it. Not to mention, if there’s one thing Disney knows its how to make buttloads of money off releasing old movies.. perhaps we’ll get re-release of the laser-disc versions of the original trilogy on blu-ray or something.

“We’re likely to focus more on social and mobile than we are on console.” All my middle fingers are for this. As far as films go Lucas already screwed them up so hard Disney couldn’t possibly be any worse.

Despite the inherent awesome of the idea, I wouldn’t count on Disney’s newer properties ever showing up in Kingdom Hearts. We didn’t exactly get Marvel last time around.

I don’t have a lot of faith in Disney to do right by Star Wars (better than what’s been done, quite likely, but not right). Still, there’s definitely untapped potential in these brands and new blood might be the way to bring it to the fore. Net good probably, but I’m not excited with how they lead off here.

I’ll be happy to see any characters from the original trilogy or KOTOR show up in Kingdom Hearts 3. Just please nothing from the prequel trilogy/era

I’ll leave the possibilities of crossovers to Kingdom Hearts and the fans. That said, I am quite happy with this merger.

Quick, everyone! Start playing “Star Wars: The Old Republic,” and buy a crapload of copies of “The Force Unleased” to make Iger change his mind!

It says pretty clearly that they’ll be utilizing licensing arrangements. This is already widely done with the Star Wars franchise. I mean, SWTOR is licensed through BioWare already. That’s the sort of thing they’re talking about. All that they’re saying about social and mobile systems is that that is what is likely to be focused on by the in-house devs. Third-party studios will likely continue to license and release Star Wars games just like they always have.
