2D sprites? I know, I’m surprised too.

The official videos released for SMT IV thus far have been interesting. We’ve seen snippets of characters, locations, and demons, as well as brief glimpses of the way certain mechanics have evolved. Now the full Tokyo Game Show reel has hit the internet, so we can all take a nice long look at Atlus’ upcoming dungeon-crawler.

The biggest takeaway from this lengthy video is that while some things are changing for MegaTen, other things are staying the same. For example, dungeon crawling seems to be a much more modern affair, with a third-person perspective and the ability to attack enemies on the overworld map. Conversely, battles appear to be mostly untouched, as only the 2D sprites of your enemies are visible on the top screen. The actual art is much improved though, especially when it comes to that “being sliced in half” death animation. What do you think about the alterations and the stubborn mainstays?

Shin Megami Tensei IV will arrive exclusively on 3DS sometime in 2013.

It seems that the Mesians once again are on the top of their game. Not matter what happens or how many of them you kill, they always find a way to survive. When will be the Cult Of Gaia ever have a chance at not be suppressed.

    I always root for Chaos.

I’m not into handhelds but this is one game that can get me to look the other way.

I’m excited for this game and cannot wait for it.

I already love this game… The 3D movement, the Dead Space-ish interface with the COMPs (even though I never really played Dead Space, mostly in protest it wasn’t System Shock 3), I still love me some turn-based combat and Shin Megami Tensei is always epic in the main series installments and out. I just want this and Soul Hackers and Etrian Odyssey to get Western release in U.S. and U.K.

Why did you not play Dead Space for that? I thought the people who made system shock 1 and 2 made Bioshock (see the resemblance?) So REALLY you should have protested Bioshock.

      Yeah, you protested wrong.

Not really. The reason BioShock wasn’t a System Shock game was because EA kept the rights of the series from the people who made it. Basically, they stole the IP from the people who built it, just like they did with Wasteland until they FINALLY gave up the rights to that 20+ years later, allowing InXile to finally make that promised sequel 22 years later via kickstarter. (Still looking forward to that.)

Before Dead Space came out, rumor was that EA was making another System Shock, and further rumor suggests Dead Space’s prototypical design was going to be System Shock 3, but rather than keep a respectable series going, they changed it into a ‘new’ IP for seemingly no reason. About the only part of the ‘Shock formula that’s missing in Dead Space is a looming, seemingly omnipotent villain you appear to have no hope against.

Again I think your looking at this wrong. Bioshock has WAY more in common with those games in how the game uses its location as a way of trapping the player in small linear enclosures, the plasmids were just like in System Shock.

Bioshock IS System Shock just a dumb-ed down one. The only thing I can guess you (and the rumor mongers) got the idea that Dead Space was even supposed to be a system shock game was the local of space and the horror aspect. And really once you SAW the footage of the game you could easily tell it wasn’t a system shock game, the feel is different. The atmosphere is also quite removed from SS, the gameplay is NOTHING LIKE IT. The game company didn’t do ANYTHING, YOU DID. You set up those expectations in an unreasonable fashion and then blamed the company when rumors and flights of fancy didn’t take.

Besides the man in the wheel chair (who might either be ‘Steven’ or ‘Louis Cypher’) did they actually show anything new?

It’s definitely Stephen. But yeah, most of this is older footage elaborated on and extended.

The game looks pretty damn good, had no idea what was going on but I want it. But I live in Europe. So I’m screwed. Dear Nintendo, you guys are fucking retarded. I don’t care what reasons you have for region locking it doesn’t justify it. You’re also gay and I had sex with your mum. Wait… that’s too much Xbox live for me.
