0x10c Footage Debuts, Takes Inspiration from Firefly, 10.0 out of 10 based on 1 rating

That looks like it is made out of science!

Mojang is the company behind Minecraft. It is also hard at work on Scrolls. But Markus “Notch” Persson has another game in development, and he recently gave a lengthy interview with PC Gamer about the unique space game, 0x10c.

While the new footage above shows off a game-in-progress (and some Team Fortress 2 assets), the real good stuff is in Marsh Davies’ write-up. He asked Notch about his inspirations for the sandbox sci-fi experiment, which opened the name-drop floodgates. Elite, FTL, and Firefly all got mentioned, which is good company to find yourself in. “The goal is to have it feel a bit like Firefly,” Notch told PC Gamer, “You can try to land on a planet but you mess up and, instead of having the ship just explode like it would in real life, the landing gear gets broken. Then you have to try to fix that by finding resources.”

With lofty goals like that, it would be easy to get your hopes up–something Mojang developer Tobias Möllstam is all too aware of. “We don’t know where 0x10c is really headed,” he admitted, “We’ve built a lot of hype around it – now we need to take a step backwards and not raise too many people’s expectations.” With both the dedicated fan-base of Minecraft and the rabid constituency of hardcore science fiction aficionados to please, they’ve sure got their work cut out for them.
