I miss the N64.

We know how much the Wii U costs. We know what games are coming out for it. However, we are still missing a few key pieces of information. Namely, what about the controllers? Also, how much are the games themselves going to cost?

Nintendo has confirmed that the Pro Controller, a.k.a., the one that looks like an Xbox or PS3 controller, will retail for $49.99. It should be available on November 18th with the rest of the launch day hardware. There has been no word on the North American price for Gamepad “tablets,” but since no announced games support more than one at a time, this is less of an issue. However, it will quickly become important when the devices start breaking. The confirmed Japanese MSRP is ¥13,440 ($173.62).

Additionally, Nintendo has revealed a base $59.99 price point for retail boxed games. Presumably there will be variation, but this more or less brings this console in line with the other HD platforms.

I think that once reports of broken GamePads pile up, Nintendo will be tempted to release them separately.

The price of games is fair, so no complaints there. The price tag on the Pro Controller is daunting, but I’ll get it anyway.

The cost of the tablet gamepad is about HALF the cost of the full Wii U basic set… (which is ¥26,250)

On first glance, that means the basic level console is just about as expensive as that gamepad…

    Phew.

But in reality, the price of the gamepad is probably reduced within the bundle, since it’s part of the bundle. Still rather expensive.

If you take the ratio of the US price over the Japanese price (converted to USD) of a basic Wii U and multiply that with the Japanese cost of the gamepad (converted to USD), you get just over $125. I’d say something around that price would be expected for the United States.

The tablet gamepad price will be one of the reasons why this system won’t go over well with parents because who wants there playing with will most likely priced at 150-125 usd and having to pay half the cost of a new system to replace it.

Meh. That is significantly less than an iPad and parents have still bought those for their kids in droves. Price is all relative after all.

And how many games could you buy for the system for the price of that pad like 2 to 3 games depending on the prices that is a big deal no console has ever had a main feature controller cost half the systems price.
