Sony should have forgotten trying to make an independent library for their portables and consoles: launch the PSP as a fully-fledged PS2 and offer a console-to-portable program.

If they had done that, developers would have continued to develop for the PS2 long past its prime (it’s now a portable AND a console) and Sony could have pushed back launching the PS3 another year or two…avoiding that $600 “get a second job” launch price, and possibly getting *even better* hardware for it.

Then, when the PS3 was in late life and you *could* launch the Vita as a PS3 portable system (not really possible at the moment), it could kick life into the PS3 library and stave off the PS4 for a while.

And Capcom? I am convinced Capcom is trying to kill MegaMan, not use it. Why can’t they just launch a title which officially ends the series, though?

I’ve never watched your podcast before, but I’m going to now.:) By the way, thank you for mentioning Digimon adventure the game. I thought I was the only one excited about games for the franchise, especially when I’ve seen other people making petitions that only reach 1,000 signatures at the most. Right now I’m ordering this game called Digimon re:digitize, which has the exact same game mechanics as Digimon world 1. DW1 is one of my favorite games of all time since it felt like I was playing digimon adventure. Now that Digimon adevnture is actually going to be made into a video game I’m happy ,but I’m also sad since Namco Bandai are too scared to even think about localizing it. That just frustrates me that they are releasing One piece Kaizuko Muso, which by the way looks pretty kick ass, but not these games. I’m thinking if they just release this game on psnstore they would make alot of money without worrying about a total money loss.

The big difference between ON:PW and Digimon Adventure is that well the PS3 has a far larger install base than the PSP these days, especially when it comes to a game nominally aimed at children. And even then, OP:PW is going to be a PSN download only in the US despite getting a full retail release in both Europe and Japan. Nor will it feature any English voice work despite there already being an active cast for the still in production dub. So its release here should be seen for what it is: Namco Bandai taking a gamble while also minimizing the risk from said gamble as much as they can. Dollars to donuts, the decision to actually release the game stateside was likely a near thing.

But decisions like these that can work for a game mostly aimed and/or possessing potential appeal for a more hardcore and/or older demographic just would not be viable in the same way with a property that is technically aimed at kids. Whatever appeal to a nostalgic older audience, or those of us who simply just like the franchise regardless of age, Digimon might have, at the end of the day don’t kid yourself about the role that younger audience plays in keeping the series around. These games do have to be able to reach that vital younger audience after. And as relativity weak as general sales of the PSP where in the US, they were even worse in terms of that very younger age bracket.

The shame of it all is that US Digimon fans are kind of getting screwed over by the same Monster Hunter effect which is still keeping the PSP viable in Japan. Without the continued success of the PSP there, not mention its wide install base among all ages, perhaps Namco Bandai would have felt the time was ripe to take Adventure and make it a Vita game. But the reality is they don’t have to because Adventure can still tap into that aforementioned audience to be a big success on a system that will require far less expense and resources to develop a game on than the Vita would.

It is less risk for more potential reward and I cannot honestly blame Namco for making this decision. But all the same, it is a decision that likely dooms the game to being Japan only. The fact that Digimon has never really built up popularity among younger viewers today that it once had with the ones of the past does not help matters either. If the show was a hot commodity at the moment in the States, maybe then we might have seen a port of past games or at least increase the chance of this one getting released on more systems.

If there is any chance of the PSP version of Digimon Adventure coming to the US, it lies in a Project Rainfall style campaign to show Namco that there is indeed a sufficient audience for the game. But as you yourself said, previous attempts at such a campaign have not gone anywhere, which in turn probably means that such an audience likely does not exist in the numbers required especially as it relates to PSP owners.

The best we can hope for is that Digimon Adventure is a big enough hit to warrant a port to a system where localizing it might actually be viable. It is a slim hope but better than none I suppose. And of course there is always importing for those who don’t mind wading through tons of Japanese text. Thanks for the comment and the kind words alike and I hope you keep enjoying the show.

My problem with the Super Slim PS3 is that I have yet to hear if they’ll be putting back in PS2 backwards compatibility, which I don’t expect them to restore anyway. The PS2 classics library isn’t complete, and I consider the removal of PS2 compatibility the primary reason the HD collections aren’t just fun, but necessary.

As for the Vita, I could care less. Like Shaun said, the Vita is a more powerful system, that doesn’t mean it’s superior in all fronts. I rather like the idea of a second screen you can control with a stylus, as opposed to a backside that serves as a substitute, although the fact that it can apparently serve as the L2 and R2 buttons is a plus.

Never considered that Capcom could sell the IP to someone else. On the one hand, it would allow that franchise to be placed in better care. On the other hand, I don’t think even Capcom is stupid enough to sell off one of their most popular franchises, even if they’re going to screw it over until the end of time.

As for Kingdom Hearts, I’ll try and justify the name. HD is obvious, so why not include that? ReMIX could be derived from The World Ends With You -solo remix-, as well as a reference to the premix in Re:Chain of Memories and Re:coded. As for 1.5, that was alluded to in the secret message from Dream Drop Distance. In terms of what they should have called it, I decided last year or so that they could call it Re:Collection. It’s simple enough, but it conveys so much.

Oh I understand where the name comes from and it does make sense in its own way. That does not change the fact that a. its still something of an overly descriptive mouthful and b. plays into the general habit of overly busy naming practices that Square has made a habit of in recent years.

Basically I am just having some fun with them. It is not like one of their names has ever put me off playing one of their games. And I think it is obvious from my work on this site that I am a fan in general of the company and their work.

I think for the first time ever I might be in 100% agreement with everything Shaun said here. I’m perfectly happy with the Vita and its offerings, but it will never be the smash Sony wants it to be.

Capcom…ugh…oh Capcom. Not even going there. The one game that struck a chord with me more than any other though was E.X. Troopers, which is an anime style Lost Planet spin off. It looks gorgeous and Capcom said they don’t currently have plans to localize it :( .

Also, Ys: Celceta, Sea of Treas looks amazing. I’m hoping Xseed will localize it, if not, another import!

Rockman X-over doesn’t look bad, it will likely be an amusing time waster and practically no one would be up in arms about it if it was being released in between other Megaman titles, but its the only thing right now, and its completely unsatisfying that this is all we will get. the amount of disrespect they show for their own franchise and fanbase is astounding. Surely most of the company still loves Megaman, but there’s that one higher-up that has some bone to pick with Megaman or more likely Keiji Inafune and wants the company to have nothing to do with Megaman anymore. Hopefully their management changes soon or they sell off the rights to another company, preferable to Inafune’s.

The new PS3 was a terrible decision by Sony. It’s been many years since the PS3 came out and there’s people already talking about the next generation consoles (which already started with the Wii U), so why just NOW did they decide to release this new version of the PS3? It makes no sense to me.

Also, can you explain to me how exactly different color models boost a console’s sales? Really, who decides not to buy a console because it’s not, say, purple? Or who, after knowing all the details about a console, its game line, and etc, only decides to buy said console after it is announced it will also come in, say, purple?

Now, about Megaman, I mean, come on. Capcom is up there with EA on gaming companies that apparently understand NOTHING of their public. They don’t make terrible mistakes, they keep making them as if thinking that if they kept fucking up long enough, reality would shift so that they became suddenly the right party. I’m with Shaun on this, if Capcom is going to keep up this mockery, they should just sell the rights to the Megaman series to someone who will treat the franchise with respect.

About Kingdom Hearts, I’ve read somewhere that the collection would indeed be localized, but its veracity is debatable. I -am- hoping that it will be, however, but even so I think I’ll wait for the collection with KH II Final Mix (and hopefully Birth By Sleep?).
