Rumor: No More PS-All Stars Characters, 5.0 out of 10 based on 1 rating
20 characters have been revealed for SuperBot Entertainment and Sony’s PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale. While absolutely necessary inclusions like Kratos and Nathan Drake made the cut, many fans are still holding out hope for classics like Spyro the Dragon or Crash Bandicoot. I may have bad news.
In a post over on PlayStation.Blog, Social Media Manager Sid Shuman stated in the comments that “We have revealed the full launch lineup of characters.” This came only a short while after expressing the same sentiment on Twitter. I think it is safe to say that this off-handed confirmation will end up overshadowing the video released today:
Of course, the insistent terminology of “launch lineup” seems to imply that we will be seeing some downloadable characters after the initial release. Familiar faces like Assassin’s Creed‘s Ezio and Final Fantasy XIII‘s Lightning have been among the more likely, especially given a certain Sony advertisement that ran before the game’s announcement, but the road to DLC fighters is always paved with controversy. Let us know what you think in the comments below.
PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale will be available on November 20th, 2012 for PS3 and PS Vita.

See Kat and Emmet in action!
Currently, Sackboy is one of the most broken characters in PlayStation AllStars Battle Royale. So to have a little fun, me and my buddy tried to demonstrate this one match while streaming. The following video is the hilariousness that ensued.

How… shocking.

Now we just need Spyro the Dragon.
If this does turn out to be legit, there are some interesting choices here.
Music Mondays revisits the band that brought us tunes from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Bit.Trip Runner.
I’ll pass on this game. Apart from the moronic inclusion of a certain character whom has yet to prove himself and is widely hated around the internet,I see no reason to give this game a chance. I’ll stick to Super Smash Brothers where the roster is not a complete joke and not having to worry about DLC.
First, I can understand with Sony and this having to have 20 characters since those seem to be the characters that are important to Sony. Second like someone said that there are unknown locked characters for the game. Hopefully they wont pull the Capcom thing and pull that *****ing **** ****y thing they did for $20 and I will have some respect for them. Third, stop ****ing about Spyro and Crash guys. I know they were also the best they are done and are property of some other company. The one thing however that worries me is that they could’ve pulled more time to add somethings or put in something that would’ve been a huge surprise for the game.
We still don’t know if some characters will be unlockable. It’s possible the comment was just poorly worded, and that the rest of the not-DLC roster could be hidden.
When was the last time that a fighting game actually kept its unlockable characters unannounced prior to release? Brawl itself is the last I can recall, and everyone knew it was the case with that one because several obvious veteran characters were among those unannounced (Luigi, for instance).
It seems pretty standard these days for fighting game makers to announce everyone in their games, even if some are unlockable.
Sometimes I wonder whether my statement of “No Crash and Spyro in a game like this, is like no Mario and Link in a Smash Bros game.” would make sense at a time like this? Shaun K.’s sad comment also isn’t doing me any favors. Usually when it comes to games, I know exactly which ones I want, regardless of what some reviewers say, but with this one…maybe a rental and after seeing the DLC characters just to make sure.
Sony, I am disappoint
I’ve been a Sony fan since the PS1. I’ve bought multiple versions of the PS1, PS2, PS3, and even the portables. I get every multi-platform game on a Playstation if possible, and I’ve spent way too much money getting PS1 and 2 classics on the PSN.
And yet… I still can’t find an ounce of caring in me for this game, and I can’t figure out why. I love Super Smash Bros., why don’t I care about this? I think it’s because Sony isn’t known for characters, not like Nintendo. This is kinda like if Microsoft released an Xbox All-Stars game.
Does anyone else feel this way or is it just me? And if it’s not just me, I’d love to know if someone has an idea -why-.
I definitely feel similar but its more than just an issue of characters. Taken in and of themselves, Sony has a perfectly reasonable selection of characters to draw from. Certainly more than enough that they didn’t need to fill this title with so many third party, multi-console characters.
Now between the various beta weekends and E3 I have actually spent a decent amount of time with this game. And all of that time points me to one conclusion: this is a game that Sony is rushing out the door as a cash grab.
Say what you will about Smash Bros., but the game originated from a deep and passionate love of the characters involved. And later games have featured the same kind of commitment and if informs every aspect of those game. Meanwhile PS All-Stars just does not come from the same kind of place and it shows in everything from the character choices to the stages to the gameplay itself.
Take the stages. Sure the mash-ups sound kind of clever in theory… But in practice I think they lack the charm that often accompanies the stages of a Smash Bros. game. Maybe a couple mash-ups mixed in with more regular takes that serve to act as loving tributes to the titles in question. As it is, it all just feels messy and ill thought out to me.
I just think that the game is half-baked and while it may sell I don’t think it is going to acquire the same kind of following Smash Bros has. Leaving aside everything else, the gameplay is just too shallow. Its lacks the depth of the series its ripping off in my opinion.
Wouldn’t surprise me if it is indeed being rushed. I mean, it was only announced less than half a year ago, yet it’s being released in just a couple months? And that after a delay to the original release date? Seems extremely fast to me.
Personally, I also find myself ambivalent about it, but that’s likely in part because I’m not a long-time Sony fan. My first Sony console was a PS2 that I picked up cheap after the PS3 was already out, and the only other one I have at this point is a PSP that I barely have any games for. I don’t recognize most of the characters in the roster, haven’t played the games of most that I do (Sly Cooper, Jack & Daxter, Ratchet & Clank, that guy from Infamous), and the remaining ones are not characters I’ve ever felt any great desire to see in a Smash Bros-style game (Kratos, Dante, Heihachi).
I might be marginally more interested if they were using the original Dante rather than the reboot one, but eh, I have him in UMvC3 anyway, so maybe not.
Thank you Shaun, I think you’ve nailed it. There’s just no passion being put into the game, so it’s hard to feel passionate about it myself. That’s sad, because I think this kind of thing -can- work well – as I said, the Super Smash Bros. series is one of my favorites, and I’m even a big fan of the Dissidia Final Fantasy games (although that’s just characters from one series).
I don’t think it helps that Sony has never seemed like a cohesive whole, really – it’s just a platform, while Nintendo has more character and a stronger personal touch.
Also, no Crash Bandicoot, what? I remember him being a huge Sony character, almost to the level of Sonic, in the 90′s. And what about lesser-known (these days) characters like Gex? You’re right, there’s no need for all the multi-platform characters. Super Smash Bros. has always had strong nostalgia to it, and I think they’ve forgotten that ingredient here, as well – while there is some, most of the characters are recent.
You’re wrong. First of all, many of the included characters are fan favorites. There is passion involved; just watch the “Michael” video.
Second, this game is NOT a ripoff of Smash Bros. I am a hardcore Melee and Project M fan, and I see MANY MANY differences. The only similarities between the two add up to the common genre, but All-Stars is not a ripoff.
First, how does the “Michael” video fit into any of this? It has absolutely nothing to do with the production of this game. Sure it may have fan-favorite characters, but that means nothing about the amount of passion that goes into a game. Second, if this game isn’t a ripoff of SSB, then I’m the King of England.
1. The Michael video fits because it shows Sony actually CARES about its characters and fans.
2. I’m serious. This game is almost nothing like Smash Bros. Are they similar enough to be in the same genre? Yes. But does anyone accuse Tekken of being a ripoff of Street Fighter? Does anyone accuse Borderlands of being a ripoff of Fallout 3? Does anyone accuse LittleBigPlanet of being a ripoff of Mario? No. People like you are just being quick to judge without learning about the deeper mechanics. Again, I know A LOT about Smash Bros. I know all the advanced techniques, the competitive play, the character tiering, et cetera. This game is sufficiently different. Mechanically, it’s very different from Smash, but people think it’s a ripoff because it happens to star popular mascots.
Since I can’t even reply to you Flowteau, I guess this message will have to suffice.
1. The “Michael” video was never about the characters, period. It was about a celebration of the gamer; nothing more, nothing less. Even still, the people behind that video have absolutely nothing to do with this game, so if one group of people shows passion, that doesn’t mean another group will have the same kind of passion. A company’s passion towards its fanbase is defined by its actions, not some amount of ingenious pathos from the marketing team.
2. I will give the game a fair shot when it comes out. I’m not calling it a bad game; I’m calling it as I see it, which I just feel is a rip-off. Your analogies just boggle my mind because Little Big Planet has absolutely nothing to do with Mario, and Borderlands and Fallout 3 have the same mix of FPS and RPG and a vaguely similar setting, but that is about it. SSB and Playstation All-Stars have far too much in common to be purely a coincidence.
You’re not alone, dude, except I only care a little bit for the game, mainly because…it lacks soul, like something is missing from this game.
You’re not alone, dude, in my entire gaming life, Sony consoles were the only consoles I ever played and grew up with.
but I only care a little bit for the game, mainly because…it lacks soul, it lacks charm, like something is missing from this game.
20 is a little on the small end really. Standard seems to be around 30 for a fighter these days, unless your going to have a lot of character interactions between them. Plus Blazblue, a series known for it’s small character roster to emphasis balance, hi res artwork, intertwining story with all characters and such, will pass 20 playable characters with Chrono Phantasma when that gets released.
Best wait for when the reviews start rolling out. See if it holds up. If not, wait for it to be given out on PSN+ a year or two after release.
