The bad news for PopCap sadly continues, as the 96 employees at PopCap’s Dublin-based studio were let go today when their office closed down.
The good news is that PopCap and EA are doing what they can to keep their employees in-house. According to a statement made to Gameinformer, “PopCap has provided outplacement support and many employees have offers in other parts of PopCap, at EA or new opportunities with technology partners in Ireland. Europe remains a critical market for PopCap and we will continue to grow our presence through centralized services operated from our North American offices and through the extensive European EA network. Worldwide, PopCap is still growing, and intends to continue hiring and developing current staff.”
This is the second wave of layoffs that has struck PopCap, with fifty employees being let go recently in the U.S. All told, that is 146 employees either out of a job or being shuffled around in-house. Hopefully, this is the last wave of cuts PopCap will go through.

Wait wait wait… lemme get this straight:
“We’re firing all these people..but we are going to continue to GROW and HIRE more people and develop current staff” (paraphrased)
So you’re going to fire/layoff people but go and “grow” while hiring more people rather than keep the ones currently with you? HOW ARE YOU EVEN GROWING IF YOUR FIRING PEOPLE!?
My business exp goes as far as earning an A in Business 101 during college…but that makes no sense to say you’ve had to fire peeps (likely due to financial problems) and then contradict yourself saying you’ll continue to grow and THEN a swift kick to the balls of the people you fired by stating you’ll hire more people.
Why am i even trying to figure this out? Every dev under EA suffers this same, painful, self destructive financial death.
Prediction: Popcap gets WORSE then eventually dies due to continuing financial pain.
Is it not surprising that PopCap have started haemorrhaging staff now that EA took over? Or did I miss something?
