Obsidian Teases New Title, 10.0 out of 10 based on 1 rating

Hmmmm. I wonder if the new game will have anything to do with 4?

I don’t care what anybody says: Obsidian Entertainment kicks ass. Sure, they somehow manage to make their games even buggier than Bethesda, but I think that’s only because they keep shooting for something magnificent, accrue errors on the way, and then slowly fix them up once somebody points out that their game is an absolute mess. I’d rather have a messy work of genius than a spotless example of mediocrity. I admit to having been a touch worried about their future since earlier this year they announced cutting some staff members, affecting a future project as well as their impending South Park RPG: The Stick of Truth.

Is this that future game? Are they still making it? We can only speculate, but it does seem, regardless of the effects of the layoffs on the studio as a whole, that The Stick of Truth isn’t the only game in Obsidian’s bag of goodies. There’s not much known about the title so far, with a teaser page adorned with the number 4, wreathed in Ouroboros, accompanied by the text: “‘What do the words mean?’ ‘Nothing. The Dirge of Eir Glanfath is sound without form, a lone voice crying out in mourning because it must.’”

Clicking on the splash page brings us to a forum section dedicated to discussion and speculation on “Project X,” Obsidian’s codename for this upcoming RPG. Questions arise – What’s an Eir Glanfath? What’s he dirging for (yes, I just verbed the word dirge)? Why Ouroboros? Four? Surely, this can only be the role-playing adaptation of Hungry, Hungry Hippos we’ve been expecting.

Or, more reasonably (if that’s your style) it could easily be Dungeon Siege 4. But where’s the excitement in predicting that? IT’S AN RPG ABOUT THE LIFE AND TIMES OF BETTY WHITE!

Okay, this just recently ended and the update is that it’s a new kickstarter project to make an old-school infinity engine style isometric RPG combining the best aspects of Baldur’s Gate, Icewind Dale, and Planescape: Torment called Project Eternity! Spread the word and give it support!

Ooh, I sure it’s referring to a realistic adaptation of the life of an alchemist, the earliest examples of modern scientists. Because if we loved the pretend science of Portal 2, the pretend science of turning lead into gold is the next logical step!

But yeah, Dungeon Siege 4 would be pretty cool, I guess.

I don’t know if the Siege series has any life left in it after Space Siege and Dungeon Siege 3. Also, “Eir Glanfath”? I thought made-up words like FF 13′s ‘fal’cie’ and Amalur’s ‘dokkalfar’ sounded dumb ‘Eir Glanfath’ takes the cake.

Somehow, I am convinced this might be Dungeons and Dragons-related. Probably not a spiritual successor to Planescape: Torment (the Black isle Studios magnum opus Chris Avellone had recently stated he wanted to revisit in some way), but as for what it is, I couldn’t tell you… The number four in context of D&D games is unclear, unless somehow they are making Eye of the Beholder 4, which would be quite a stretch. As for the Ouroboros, I believe they’ve been using that as their company’s emblem for a couple months now… Either that or I’m just getting confused by the Elder Scrolls Online symbol, which is a three-snaked ouroboros (still not looking forward to that game, BTW, Bethesda).

I don’t know if they are deliberately leaving out letters/characters ,but Eir Glanfaath sound very Irish Gaelic.

    Eir-Eire

Glanfaath-sounds like glanfaidh (I will clean/i will clear or to clean/to clear)
