Update: A Japanese trailer for Earth Defense Force 4 has hit the interweb. Bask in its ridiculous glory!
Original Story: I was disappointed by the last EDF game. While all of the games have been bad, they have usually somehow fallen into the “so bad, it’s good” catagory. Unfortunately, developer Sandlot attempted to bring the series into the modern day and take the gameplay from extremely lacking, to diverse. The problem was, by making the game more complicated, they lost what made EDF great and actually produced a terrible glitchy game with no “campy” B-movie quality.
However, despite negative critical response to Insect Armageddon, Sandlot have decided to try again. In 2013 we can expect a brand new Earth Defense Force to hit the shelves. I for one could not be more excited. Forgive and forget, and all that jazz.
Due for release on both PS3 and Xbox 360, it would appear that the 4th installment in actually a sequel to the 2nd! Based 8 years after the events of EDF:2017, humanity has discovered that the alien menace, previously thought destroyed, has survived underground. My Japanese is not great, but from what I can roughly tell, I think that humanity has used the defeated aliens technology to help rebuild civilization too. I sure this all backfires. Then again, who played EDF for the plot?
EDF 2025 (i’m calling the title now) will apparently also support an online multiplayer mode. No word is yet out on if this is going to be a co-op or competitive mode, but I would hazard a guess at Co-op.
Additionally, there is no official word on if the game will be released on EU or US shores, but I remain hopeful. Show your EDF love in the comments people!

Looks neat, but I’ll never play it. I’m squeamish enough about spiders as it is, and I’ve just recently upgraded to a 42″ widescreen… which also has to be closer to me since it doesn’t fit in my old TV cabinet. Yyyyyyeah. >_>
Giant robots? It’s good to see the series returning to the outlandish variety that was (based on what I’ve heard) one of its greatest strengths. Here’s hoping the game gets a release here so it can remind us of the ridiculosity we’ve been missing!
