The storm gathered and now the news has broken. Square Enix unveiled its big announcement for the future of Final Fantasy XIII at its 25th Anniversary Celebration for the iconic franchse, as it unveiled Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII. This will be the final title in the XIII sub-series, and will conclude the journey of its titular heroine.
Right now we know several things about the game. First, we know that it takes place many years after XIII-2 in a place called “Novus Partus.” The basic premise of the adventure involves Lightning in a race against time to save the world while an in-game clock records the last 13 days of its existence. We also know that there will be an emphasis on customization and the idea of a “World-Driven” experience. Everything else can be found in these videos below, starring the game’s creators:
Motomu Toriyama (Director):
Yuji Abe (Game Design Director):
Isamu Kamikokuryo (Art Director):
Yoshinori Kitase (Producer):
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII will be coming to Xbox 360 and PS3 sometime in 2013.

*pokes head in*
*doesn’t see anything hinting towards a Final Fantasy XV developed with the mind of trying to bring the game back to its roots*

Being one of the apparently few who actually rather enjoyed playing XIII and XIII-2, I think I’ll just sit back and say this: It’s completely redundant, and if it’s taking place FAAAAAAAR into the future like it has been suggested, then there’s no tie to the storyline other than Lightning. Then again, I do enjoy a good time limit, so eh. Day 1 rental, see how it is.
I never played either 13 or 13-2 so i cant relly tell, but if i’m not mistaken wasn’t lightning one of the more annoying characters in the games, so why bother bring her back? Wouldn’t that be if like Lucas made another star Wars movie called, “Star Wars Jar Jar returns” who wants to see that?
So, the next game will be called ‘Lightning Forever’? And after that we will be “blessed” with ‘Lightning & Serah’?
Final Fantasy XIII – The Squeakquel
Why don’t they title it for what it really is?
“Bland and Uninspired Mary Sue Returns”
“I’m still calling it XIII-3.”
I’m still calling it Rubbish.
“Lightning Returns” That is the worst way to entice me to want this game.
Lightning Strikes Back was so obvious a sub title to. It’s a pun AND a Star Wars reference.
I hope the next instalment is called ‘Ride the Lightning.’
RAIDO ZA RAITONINGU!!!
Titles to run away from really fast
*blink*
…oh sorry, i thought Square-Enix was avoiding high profile games or something so i wasn’t paying attention.
Make up your mind SE…
Much like 13-2, I have a small amount of hope for this game. The further we get away from the mess that is the 13/13-2 Actionturnbasedrpglolnododge4ubutenemiescan mess the better.
With that said, I still do not care about the story, the characters, the world, or any thing that occurs… mostly because 13 showed us all the characters are just horrible people and Serah and Noel (people who I didn’t outright hate) seem to have no presence here. Additionally, now we have yet another world we know nothing about when we barely know anything about the world we started in 4 years ago.
Also, and perhaps this is just me having wishful thoughts, but I think this is them testing the waters for Versus and Agito. The combat sounds/seems to be similar to what those two are employing. Though, I’d rather see either of those games released and not yet another FF13 spinoff. FF7 didn’t get this many spinoff games.. and that was 7.
I also think this marks the end of the FF series having any “traditional” RPG elements. They’ve completely committed themselves to this “Action game for the roundeye bro” mentality and this game perfectly illustrates that. Oh well, at least Atlus, NIS, and Xseed are still making/localizing good stuff.
“I also think this marks the end of the FF series having any “traditional” RPG elements.”
Want a bet? The entire reason this title is *not* called XIII-3 is because it doesn’t have the necessary RPG elements. They want to distance it from the franchise proper because it doesn’t have enough RPG in it.
Don’t get me wrong: I think the title sucks and hope they change it, but I understand why they did it.
I’d take that bet. I think a big part of the reason that stuff people actually care about, Vesus and Agito, are taking so long to get done/over here is cause they aren’t dudebro enough.
Well, I don’t exactly remember any time S-E’s dev team sped through games. I’m hard-pressed to imagine Versus as a prequel, so I guess developing Lightning Returns also develops parts of the world for Versus. That’s how I would do it, anyway, but since when has anyone done anything my way?
Still, I imagine all these sequels are S-E’s way of recouping losses for developing Crystal Tools. They’re probably wanting to showcase what the engine can do for an action game, not just an RPG. I’m keeping my fingers crossed that they’ll license the bloody thing, but I doubt it.

I suppose any Final Fantasy game is better than none. Of course, i’m not talking about online versions.
Rather than continuing FF13, i’d rather see a sequel to one of the older FF. I’ve never really liked the technology and settings after VII. Far too ‘clean’ for me. I’d rather see a dirty steampunk style seen in VI and to a lesser extent from VII.
I’ll admit I’m interested, but not that impressed so far. As much as I want them to finish Versus 13, but I’m equally as curious as to why Square Enix seems to have pretty much shot down localizing Type 0, a game that sounds like it has a really good story to it. I get that the PSP is pretty much dead, but why not a Vita port or a PSN release that can be played on Vita or PSP?
Because that would make sense and give everyone what they want.
My first reaction: Spoony will probably cast his “world ending spell” of FF XIII hate at the end of a game with a doom-counter.
That’s an awesome coincidence.
That said, let’s look at the specs here.
Crystal Tools engine? Check.
Action-Adventure game? Check.
Same team that made Dissidia and Kingdom Hearts? Check.
Blueprints lifted from Majora’s Mask? Check.
No chance of selling well even if awesome? Check.
Not gonna lie. Slight chance of Epic Win here.
So much hate and bile is being thrown at this announcement. I wish they would finish VS XIII too, but that is no reason to condemn the game this early. Considering that XIII-2 was a vast improvement over XIII, I quite look forward to see what they will do with XIII-3.
No way in hell am I buying this after the sh*t pile that was FFXIII and FFXIII-2.
Wait, so this is a spin off title from a direct sequel of a franchise sequel?
I’m going to throw some numbers out there, but I can’t really say I know the actual ones. From what I get, Final Fantasy Versus XIII has had trailers out since 2007. Squeenix at the time, was talking about how that along with Type-0 and FFXIII was to be some collective big deal, right? And now here we are in 2012, five years later. Over the course of those five years, we have gotten Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII-2 and now Final Fantasy XIII-3, while Versus XIII has been in development hell, and (don’t quote me on this) Type-0 has fallen into obscurity.
I can only hope that these games were designed back when XIII was and that Versus XIII isn’t just another Duke Nukem Forever, because this is getting ridiculous.
It’s even worse when you consider they started on FF13 in 2004 and this is all we have after 8 years of squeenix working on it(Yes, I know FF12 came out in 2006, but that just shows that we could have had something else since then besides FF13 and it’s sequels).
That’s the price Square has to pay for announcing too many FF games.
Theres also a 13 and 13-2 collection coming up in september 18
at 72 dollars but with no DLC on the disc for 13-2…….. i though it was impossible but they Capcom themselfs
72 dollars?! Used and separated they go for half that!
I want an excuse to be parted with my money because that’s how developers make a living, but it needs to be a good one. Excellent game? Works every time. Complete sound-track? I’ll bite. Shiny character trinkets? Maybe.
Make it worth my money.
Not even half of that
i got 13-2 at like 6 dollars for the Ps3 at gamestop and the disc was in perfect shape
Great…just great. Cuz what the Final Fantasy needs is a freakin’ TIME LIMIT TO COMPLETE THE ENTIRE GAME! I’m sorry I hate this mechanic in RPGs/open world games, (I know you can reserve the clock in Majora’s Mask but that still isn’t good enough for me)
Those games are meant to be played at the players’ own pace exploring the world and immersing yourself in the world (finding power ups, talking to people etc). I do not want a Time Limit forcing me not to enjoy the world and just get to the end credits. (Worst case offender of this is Breath of Fire 5).
If Square Enix seriously wants to make fans happy they either need to put actual EFFORT into their flagship franchise so that the story makes sense again, the gameplay is actually PLAYABLE, stop ripping off other BETTER RPGs and anime and be unique and fire that art-hack Tetysa Nomura so they can a character designer who makes BELIEVABLE and APPEALING character designs and doesn’t rip off character designs from other RPGs and freaking BIBLE BLACK!
Otherwise just let Final Fantasy die and just focus milking and ruining Kingdom Hearts, cuz I am sick and tired of seeing the franchise that got me into appreciating the story in a video game forced to parade and slut around like a sex slave from a hentai….
They would first need to fire Toriyama for making shit scrips
then they “can” another character designer
Also i am missing the part where Nomura added details to camel toes
Nomura is more of a dude with a Belt fetish and a fascination with zero-G hair. At least he’s a step up from Toriyama, that man has already ruined some of square’s greatest franchises.
What? Toriyama RUINED square’s greatest franchises? Like what?
Toriyama is the reason RPGS flourished the way they did in Japan. His designs are instantly recognizable and memorable!
He worked on the Dragon Quest series correct? That’s NOT “Square’s” that’s Enix. He’s worked on the art for the Dragon Quest games since the start.
Lets see.. he ruined the Front Mission cannon with DEvolved and don’t get me started on what he did to Aya Brea in The Third Birthday.
And what the hell are you talking about, Motomu Toriyama never worked on the Dragon Quest series or has ever been associated with Enix until the merge. The guy is a just a bad storyteller, l mean this is the dude that wrote the story for Mindjack….MINDJACK.
I think he thought you meant Akira Toriyama
How the hell does Nomura rip off from Bible Black? Final Fantasy X came out in 2001, and he was character designer before that. He’s also apparently a scapegoat creator, with him getting a lot of blame that he shouldn’t have when his character designs are really the only thing he deserves to get flack for, and even then they’re not all that bad. I don’t have too many problems with Toriyama, but I wouldn’t miss him. They need to get rid of Kitase, however, because I think he’s the biggest one at fault for Final Fantasy turning out like it has, and he’s the one who put Toriyama in the position he has anyway.
I didn’t hate 13 as much as some people seemed to, but I wasn’t exactly thrilled with the idea of 10-2(bought and played it anyway), didn’t see 13 really needing a direct sequel so I didn’t bother with 13-2, and now 13-3? We still don’t have Versus 13 yet(not that I’m waiting on it, but it’s apparently holding up KH3′s development and that’s irritating). But who was really clamoring for this? Where’s FF-15 at? Did Square just waste so much time on FF13(and they really did take way too long on it) that they’re cramming various unused resources together into sequels to turn a quick profit and make up for the years spent in development? I can only guess that the PS3 pretty has been pretty much written off then by “Squeenix” if this is all they want to give us for FF games.
No new tactics game(on the PS3 anyway), no new KH game on a home console, no Versus 13 yet…
The “world concept”, yeah they mean day/night cycles and weather effects driven by seasons. I don’t care, I want a new game. That stuff would have been great, in a new game. Out of all of the characters in the FF games over the years, the developers/producers have gotten attached to these, while ignoring fans. I don’t get it.
There is already talk about a Demo impression, it seems they are ripping off/inspiring from Persona 4, The Last Story, Valkyrie Profile/Majoras Mask, Assassins Creed/KH3D parkour
with Lightning going as the only playable character in the game

This seriously feels disjointed from FF 13 and 13-2 and we still have no clue if the other Gods will have a role in this because Toriyama just forces Lightning down our throats with “She is The face of Square Enix and FF”
Seriously? FF is supposed to re invent itself with each title and the Ps3 literally has no other FF to enjoy except Ps1 titles because of all this FNC garbage
I also call Bullshit on the “Murder Scene”, the world is supposed to not have life or death
I wish they would just call it Final Fantasy XIII-3, because the title is really kind of meh to me. I think it’s interesting that they’re calling it the end of Lightning’s story, although I don’t think that necessarily means it’s the end of the main XIII subseries.
I need to beat XIII-2 first, but for now this game is making me think of Majora’s Mask.
Can we just get Versus XIII already?
