Bravely Default: Flying Fairy Still Not Confirmed for English Release, 10.0 out of 10 based on 1 rating

It's time to play "Square Enix's male or female?"

The ridiculously named Bravely Default: Flying Fairy has been on the peripheries of my radar over the last several months, but has come to the forefront of my “Most Wanted” list rather recently. The Square Enix 3DS RPG looks like a lot of old-school fun, so check out the newest trailer below.

The game is supposedly a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, a DS title that no one seems to remember exists. Both games are very “traditional,” i.e. have random encounters, turn-based combat, and the classic job system that defined many a Squaresoft release. Such a return to form is something I see requested on the internet with quite some frequency, so it will be interesting to see if there is a large movement for a translation. I’d imagine they would give it a better name if it came to the West.

Bravely Default: Flying Fairy will be released on October 11th,2012 in Japan. No localization information has been made available at this time.

4 heroes of light was pretty fun, but it had the problem that older ff games had of having zero plot. But as opposed to the current problem of having reaaaaally shitty plots, I’ll take a sequel to this any day over, say, 13-3: lightning’s train simulator.

I actually like the title. It stands out, and sounds interesting.

This game is looking great, so I really hope we get an American release. And I also hope that on the matter of the title, Square Enix will… bravely default.

“The game is supposedly a spiritual successor to Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light, a DS title that no one seems to remember exists.”…Cause it was terrible. Auto-targeting in a turn-based rpg? Really, REALLY? Just a sign of the FF13 series’ mentality of letting you play the game as little as possible was starting to infiltrate other areas of Square.

Which even if the game wasn’t “that bad” it came out in the shadow of FF13… which if we may recall may have slightly harmed the FF brand name and Square’s reputations.. being one of the most hated games of recent history and all. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that this spiritual successor is evading the FF name.

Huh, haven’t heard of this one before. An old-school JRPG for the 3DS is something I’d definitely be interested in, though. I’ll keep an eye out for it, and hope it gets a NA release.

From left to right: female, male, female, male.

4 Heroes of Light had a relatively quiet release, I think. Square Enix loves those weird names, although I think Flying Fairy does have an in-story explanation (Although the title implies that fairies that do fly is apparently uncommon), and “Default” is a in-game mechanic. It just seems like Square Enix makes these names up, and then makes the game justify the title.

Oh, at least this will be a wholly original title for the 3DS, spiritual successor or otherwise.
