Early copies of Japanese gaming magazine Famitsu have begun to hit the internet, and with their translation comes news of a new Ace Attorney title. Capcom’s visual novel/adventure game isn’t just returning though–it’s bringing back Phoenix Wright. The new game, tentatively titled Ace Attorney 5, is “set one year after the events of Ace Attorney 4 and sees Phoenix Wright return to being a lawyer.”

The only other information we have right now is that “Wright has a new partner, a mysterious girl in yellow clothing.” We’ll likely know more in the next couple months, as official English information on the 3DS exclusive is made available.

Additionally, it seems as though an ad in the magazine contains a hint at a “November 29 release date” for Professor Layton vs. Ace Attorney in Japan. This is consistent with the official “late 2012″ line. Rumors seem to indicate that the West will be seeing this anticipated crossover as well, although it will likely be a few months after Japan gets through with it.

Sigh well at least this news helps temper the case of depression brought on by the announcement of the final professor layton game. I can’t really add more to this that hasn’t already been said, I want to see maya, pearl and the rest from the origional trilogy to see how they have changed over the years. However if they write off Apollo Justice, Emma (a character from the 5th case of the DS {and downloadable for wiiware} from the first game)and Trucey would be a really wasted oppertunity, I really want to be able to play as both of them both in the courtroom and investigating like in the final case of AJAA making use of both the Magamata and Apollo’s Graymere gift, I also want more answers about what happens to Gavin and edgeworth, possibly Godot getting off for good behavior :)

Huh. I thought we weren’t getting Professor Layton vs Ace Attorney? I mean, if we do get it, that’s awesome, I just don’t want to get my hopes up.

Hope it’s not 3d dimensional like Layton and Phoenix above. the Sprite work in the other games looked gorgeous and gave the series a distinct style, at least to me.

Its been confirmed to be 3D in courtrooms. Blah.

Also, no Maya makes me sad. She’s Wright’s main partner. Disappearing in Apollo Justice without a word was out of character enough. If she’s not even mentioned this time again, I’m going to be upset.

Besides, I’m sure we all want to see Pearl as a teenager… or to see if Maya grew to be like her sister… if you know what I mean. :3

Wow. I’ve just played through the Ace Attorney series for the first time this year, and am now on the last case of the last NA-released game (Edgeworth’s spin-off), and now they announce a new entry in the series. That is pretty perfect timing for me.

I hope they can fix Phoenix up from the weird things they did with his character in Apollo Justice, since this is occurring a year after that. Also, it’d be nice if they explained what happened to Maya, since for some reason she was never mentioned in that game, even though Phoenix was so important in it.

I really hope they don’t write off Apollo in the same way…

      1. They never referred to Maya by name in AJ.
      2. They never referred to Phoenix by name in AAI1, though he did get a minor cameo appearance (with no reaction from anybody in-game).

Both games referred to those characters by vague references.

Now, it makes some narrative sense in AJ: Maya was never relevant in AJ’s story, so Phoenix never needed to bring her up. Not so much in AAI1 though, because Edgeworth would sometimes think something like “just like… him”, obviously referring to Phoenix in context.

If they don’t write off that thing that should have major affects on this sequel (avoiding spoilers here), I would be upset if Apollo was completely absent. I would still be upset if they wrote that thing off too, though, unless they show a good reason in the plot (not tell).

I do agree that seeing Maya would be very nice. They did that for Ema, after all.

Yeah, obviously now that Apollo has been introduced, he’ll have to be kept in-continuity. It might be nice to see Phoenix develop some kind of actual mentor relationship with him, or at least see what the heck Phoenix’s point-of-view on their relationship is, given that was where Phoenix seemed most out-of-character in AJ.

I’d like to see both Ema and Gumshoe around, too. Gumshoe’s another one whose absence in AJ (aside from the flashback case) was annoyingly unexplained, and it’d be nice to have that addressed; but personally I really like Ema as well, so I wouldn’t want Gumshoe to completely replace her just because he was Phoenix’s detective and she’s Apollo’s.

Actually, if we’re talking about characters from Phoenix and Apollo’s games both showing up, what I want to see is Edgeworth and Franciska meet Klavier Gavin. Just to see how they’d react to a prosecutor like him. :)
