After seeing this video I really want to play this… unfortunately Zen United still seems to have way to much trouble to cope with the scale of the project (or it’s licensors for that matter) in order to release it here in Europe.
And thanks to this beeing the only PS3 game in existence with a region-lock… *sigh* T_T
I have to disagree with your critique of the story mode. I very much so like that, with one or two exceptions, they did not try to force fights into this just because it’s a fighting game (a problem, in my opinion, with most fighting game story modes, including MK9′s), and used them only where it made sense instead. If you’re going to have a story mode in a fighting game, the story needs to be the focus of the mode – the game has every other mode to give you all the fighting you could want, after all. By far the strongest part of P4A’s story was Labrys’ chapter, and that had only one fight at the very end – which honestly was probably the most unnecessary in the entire mode to boot, so I’d have had no problem if there were no fights in that chapter of the story.
I’d disagree with holding up Mortal Kombat 9′s story as getting much right, too. While I appreciate that it had a lot more effort put into it than most fighting game stories do, the end result was nothing but the video game equivalent of a dumb action movie with a bloated cast. Its use of cinematics, which is really all that it does different from other fighting game story modes, comes nowhere close to making up for its lack of good writing. Among fighting games, the BlazBlue series and P4A both offer much better stories than that mess.
Really, my one complaint with the story mode is that the ArcSys style of giving each character their own story to play through doesn’t work so well here. Because everyone is going through the same events (Labrys and parts of Elizabeth’s story aside), there’s a lot of repetition between the stories, especially with Yu, Yosuke, Chie, and Yukiko. Naoto and the P3 characters offer some variety by coming at things from a different angle and having an alternate ending, but once they’re in the TV world, the repetition is still present up until the tail end.
Beyond that though, I’d say they nailed it.
I’d have to agree with you on the story basically seeming the same, just from different perspectives. When playing through the story I mixed up the characters a lot so I didn’t see the same story 4 times in a row.
While I can definitely see people enjoying this style of story-telling, just wasn’t my cup of tea. Thanks for the discussion!
Nice to see another Episode of ‘Shinkara’! (and on the same month as you said lol)
Ah yes P4A/U. For a game that crosses both the RPG and Fighting World, Atlus and Ark System game got it right.
I’ll admit for someone who joined the fray of fighting games of BB & MVC3, this one I was the most comfortable in. It was easy to get into and I can actually hold my ground in most online matches.
As a fan of the Persona series, the change of VAs isn’t something that bothers me. Although the only thing that scares me is that the New English Teddie just reminds me of Japanese Kuma… is that even possible.
So yeah if anyone who has this on PS3, add ‘DJ_Jet89′ and maybe we can get a match together someday.
The story mode is less a fighting game with plot and more a visual novel with fights every 20-something minutes? Just like BlazBlue then.
I like both BlazBlue and Persona, so this is a perfect mix for me.
Yup, if you like the visual novel style of BlazBlue then you’ll love this. Plenty of it.
And you sir got your Persona in my fighting game? Wanna fight about it?! Just kidding. Great vid Taylor.

Music Mondays revisits the band that brought us tunes from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Bit.Trip Runner.
Not knowing anything about the Persona series i went into this thinking it was some kinda weird arc system Jojo’s Bizarre Adventure clone, though after checking out some stuff on persona and the SMT stuff was pretty intrigued, would anybody know a good place to start in either series?
Actually the story is really good, just the deliver of it isn’t good. It sets up more than just a reason for the Persona characters to fight one another but also hints at whats to come in a possible future game.
I was the PR representative for Atlus when P3 came out. It makes me so, so sad to see that THIS is the direction they took my beloved MegaTen series into.
If you had any knowledge about this you would know it’s a spin off title and not a replacement for the RPGs. P5 is still going to be made. It’s still going to be an RPG.
Your comment makes no sense.
You apparently didn’t grow up playing MegaTen like I did. My top three favorite games are SMT Nocturne, Persona 2, and SMT Devil Summoner. When they chose to “cutesy” up the franchise (starting with P3), I knew it was the end of MegaTen as we know it. We went from badass demons, forging contracts and secret lairs to annoying sentient stuffed animals and an on-rails game design. SMT was the whole reason I took the job at Atlus, and I even got to meet the MAN, Kazumi Kaneko himself! He’s an awesome dude. I can’t stand the pussification of my favorite game. XD
I’m not saying this is a bad game, I haven’t played it but I tend to like GG-style 2D fighters. But why couldn’t Atlus just make it a stand alone fighting game? Why’d they have to tie it into the Persona universe? And IF they went that route, why just P3 and P4? Where is Philemon? Or Mary?
OH. That’s what you meant, I see.
Also, OH god you’re one of those people. Listen. And listen closely. SMT is still being made. I have Strange Journey, it’s an excellent game. SMT 4 is being made right now.
Persona is NOT SMT and if you really were any part of ATLUS you would know that.
Persona is a spin-off series. It’s not actually a Shin Megami Tensei game. Atlus USA just stuck the SMT on it for brand recognition.
Wait a minute… did you just say that the graphics aren’t “technically impressive to look at”?!
Sage… I can officially say that you have no eye for art.
Dude, it’s Arc Systemworks… you should have honestly known what you were getting yourself into. Much like the Blazblue series, story mode is done through somewhat long, text-based scenes. As for the fighting system, again, what did you expect? P4E is similar to Blazblue… and Blazblue is similar to Guilty Gear. If Capcom was to make this, it would more resemble Street Fighter. If SNK made it, the game would be like King of Fighters.
I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head when talking about semantics… because the complaints pretty much are. I’m also surprised you glazed over the music like you did, seeing is how much of the game’s music comprises of remixes of Persona music.
Oh well…
Dude if you think Blazblue plays like Guilty Gear then you haven’t played either game.
There’s a lot of things that separate GG from blazblue. And this game doesn’t play like BB either.
I also have that with FF Dissidia. The fighting is fun, but oh those cutscenes where they endlessly talk between battles is boring, unless it involves Kefka or them actually fighting in the scene… XD
I disagree with you regarding the story.
From Persona4 perspective, this is a reasonable and enjoyable Character arc. Not just something putted in for the sake of just to have a story mode.
While at the same time, inner story also retain the grim sense of despair and sadness which is the trademark of Persona3.
As such, P3 characters also blend in well overall.
I enjoyed it more than the actual fighting itself.
If anything it feels much more like GG than BB. I love having a “dust” button again. Also, fighting with personas feels very different than other games. I feel like I have to be a little more careful throwing out my more powerful attacks.
The stories were pretty good too, I had no problem sitting through them all (especially Labrys!). If you don’t want to read, play arcade mode.
That’s exactly how I felt, The way the game feels, and plays is more along the lines of Guilty Gear than Blazblue. Some of the reasons I listed before. But it’s honestly much more complicated than Blazblue.
Not sure if I agree totally about the story, it is short for an RPG and long for a fighting game but it also appears to set things up for Persona 5 whenever it’s released.
I honestly love the dialogue over animated cutscenes. the gameplay is simply fantastic. plus, if you think about it, this game has more spoken dialogue THAN persona 4 probably does in the longrun, which I like because of the amazing voice cast for the game. and the similar playstyle to BB is another strong part of it. which would you rather have, something new that will probably ned to be patched at some point, or something that has been tried already and succesful?
and I personally think labry’s accent is kind of endearing, seeing as japan has its own variations with its language, like osakan accents.
For one I’m glad the story mode is as expansive as it is.
And yes there is allot of dialogue to sit through before a relatively easy match. If you don’t want to sit through that, I would like to introduce you to the arcade mode.
Also is the fact that this game is derived from the Persona series being used against it in this review? I couldn’t really tell.
Sage, I think I can honestly say now. You don’t like visual novel games. For every game that uses a cutscene style like that you act like it’s a negative trait. When in all fairness, it’s a valid form of story telling. Plus what did you expect them to do? Full anime cutscenes for every piece of story? I can’t think of any other way to tell the story for a 2D fighting game unless you use cutscenes done like in Phantom brave. Full anime cutscenes would just be too time consuming and cost too much to make. I’d rather Arc system works and Atlus make a game that is sexy to play and visually appealing than amazingly visually appealing and shit to play.
Also honestly I don’t think the latest installment of BB was that strong. while a great fighter, it makes things fairly simple for people not gonna lie. I honestly prefer Guilty Gear over Blazblue, but I’m sure a lot of people do XD
Sage just wondering how much have you played P4A vs. wise? Cause I can say from my experience with fighters and this game. It plays very little like Blazblue. To many differences. if anything his feels more like Guilty Gear.
For one movement and recovery are different. There’s no tech rolling in this game and you only hold a button to recover like GG. there’s R action which is more like KoF style rolling. There’s no Negative Edging and no Throw reject Misses. Not to mention BB is slower in comparison to this game and GG.
Hmm, it does look interesting. Sadly, I’m not into Persona, so I imagine those dialogue scenes would drag on even longer to me.
This was hardly a bad comment.
