Oh Capcom, you troll.
This year is the 25th anniversary of Mega Man, one of gaming’s most beloved and iconic characters and franchises. To celebrate, the company which owns the rights to the Blue Bomber (but seems to want to forget his existence) is pulling out the small guns and releasing a “social RPG” for iOS.
The game is called Mega Man Xover (pronounced “crossover”) and will feature different iterations of Rock Man as he tries to defeat classic villains like Dr. Wily and Sigma. That little “Autoplay” button in the corner of the available screenshots seems to indicate that this will also be somewhat of a casual experience. Not much else is known about the title, except that it allows you to customize your player character and play with friends.
I eagerly anticipate your reactions to this news.

Sounds like BETRAYAL to me.
To be completely honest, Megaman Xover (was it too expensive to spell out crossover?) sounds like a cool idea. Duking it out with a customizable…super-fighting robot(?) against villains spanning across the franchise with the (faint) chance to unlock previous protagonists, as well? I’m all for it.
It’s a real shame that they decided to make this an iOS app instead of giving it a console or even an online game. I don’t have an iOS-supported devices, but are “social RPGs” a popular game genre for these devices?
The question now is where do we go from here? Do we mindless buy this as a show of force that the fans will take anything that has the Megaman name or do we refuse this and perhaps give them a reason not to continue this series?
I…just don’t know anymore.
I’ll get heat for this but to me the only true Mega Man titles are the “Classic” series games. So I can’t say a cell phone port/rehash of MMX really screams 25th to me. Especially since the Classic series started it off. Mega Man 11 would have been the product to pique my interest.
That said I know some of the younger guys here grew up after the Classic series went on hiatus, and feel more wistful for the future to the future series like X, and Zero while others got more into the Legends Action/RPG or the Battle Network or Starforce stuff. But even there I don’t see an iphone retread of MMX being that great especially when it’s already been on a compilation (X Collection GCN/PS2), and on digital storefronts like Wii Virtual Console for eons.
A real 25th anniversary should be a new compilation featuring every game from every series ever, an entirely new game in one of the series, or a game that finally bridges the various continuities together like where Classic finally meets X.
Anyway, color me unimpressed.
Sorry Capcom. If you spell it Mega Man Xover, then the last word is pronounced zover.
…
Or if it near the end of the year, Christover. Which is a strange way to blend the two holidays together.

Now, I will probably get downvoted for saying I’m not a fan of Mega Man. I’ve played only a couple of titles in the franchise and I thought it was good, just not my cup of tea. However, I do sympathize with fans and Capcom should just go shove it. I haven’t bought a Capcom game since Resident Evil Revelations for the 3DS, and I’m even reconsidering my thoughts about buying RE6.
…Capcom, have you suddenly become averse to money? I mean, here you have one of the biggest and most iconic franchises in gaming, Mega Man, and yet you insist on doing nothing with it that will not enrage its fans. I’m having a hard time coming up with an explanation for that that makes a lick of sense.
A Megaman game without any involvement from Keiji Inafune…yeah, I can see this turning out to be a good game that doesn’t smell the least like a quick cash grab(rolls eyes).
……….if its free…maybe.
Bottom line if THIS is all that capcom is doing, ignoring the Energy Tank music CD collection, it’s worst than Super Mario All Stars put onto a Wii Disk. With the Music CD’s its still kind of worst.
Let’s look at the two other screen shots. The same feels like a auto scrolling game. The background is horrible in the sense that it’s literately only a far far off background. In fact right now I feel that it’s on auto.
This, isint it. This is like a Flash game version of Megaman Universe.
Again, if it’s free I’ll try it. Right now I don’t quite like it. I can’t hate it yet, but I will when it gets out and sucks.
Dont give capcom the saticfaction
I want to say one thing, please don’t tell me the main reason they did this is because cellphone game sales have “supposedly” greatly increased over the years. If it’s just to continue trolling Capcom fanboys, then it’s fine.
Capcom has once again used Megaman in a way no one wanted. First it was cancelling his games, then only having him be a costume in Mvs.C, using the fat and ugly Megaman from the first game’s box art in SFvs.T, and now this. I will again propose the theory that the corporate heads at capcom have gone insane and are deliberately trolling their fans.
Can’t recall who said it, but someone said (and I agree) that Bad Boxart Mega Man would have been a great joke if not for all the other shit Capcom’s pulling right now with on-disc DLC and limited game modes and the like. Seriously, they need to get their act together.
so like. I’m wearing this shirt. Got it online. only spent $7 on it. it has a Badger on it and the text reads “honey badger don’t care’. It’s a good shirt. But i think Capcom deserves it more.
Here you go Capcom and (ENTRY DELETED).
Are you fucking kidding me? Are…are you…

Just….just that.
Personally, I prefer this one: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PbDzsUqfViQ
If this will stop the “Mega Man is Dead” comments then it’s alright in my mind.
Sounds similar to Sonic Generations if you ask me. Would be interesting to see what the first trailer is like.
See, that would be an awesome thing. But we were going to get something like that, called Mega Man Universe. And then that got canned. In it’s place, we have this simplified, rushed out the door “social RPG” for cell phones. Sonic Generations got a full on console release, plus a handheld release for 3DS. This is only going to be a mobile game. The entire thing smacks of a complete failure to remember that a huge milestone in Mega Man history is coming up, but they just don’t care enough to develop a game that such an anniversary deserves, instead opting for the cheap way out. Sonic Generations, this is not.
Don’t forget Sonic Generations also got a PC release.
This however…
No health bar? Recycled enemy sprites? No level design? is it… just enemies coming at you while Mega Man automaticly runs forward?
That’s not a game, that’s a fucking Mega Man X credits sequence where you can tap the screen to make X jump and shoot >.<
A glorified version of the Mega Man 9 and 10 endless mode would've been more exciting than this.
I can’t even stand playing games on handheld consoles. Let alone a cell phone. So, this means absolutely nothing to me.
