Lotus Prince Let’s Play: American McGee’s Alice (Complete), 10.0 out of 10 based on 1 rating

Here it is, everyone: the Let’s Play that got people’s attention!  American McGee’s Alice is one of those games that people saw on store shelves back in the day, but didn’t necessarily pick up.  I myself got it relatively shortly before stores stopped selling it, back in 2000 or 2001, and the game blew my mind.  It is a dark and twisted take on Alice in Wonderland, and boy, is it handled well.  You meet almost everyone from Lewis Carroll’s original story, including some characters that even the Disney movie didn’t cover, such as the Mock Turtle!  This game is a true adventure, and I hope that you enjoy it as much as I did!

NOTE: There is a cutscene that’s blacked out, due to an error in rendering, in the installment with Level 24.  Here is a link to the “March Hare and Dormouse” clip, so you don’t have to go back and forth between videos.

MARCH HARE AND DORMOUSE

NOTE: I now have the series in playlist form!  YYYEEEEEAAAAHHHHH

I like how well adjusted she looks when she came out of the Asylum. The only thing I missed from the game was some more explicit commentary on Victorian mental health care, I mean there was the messed up kids walking around but maybe some more symbolism of the external sources of anguish. And on the other hand, I am not found of the notion that mentally ill people could cure themselves if they only pulled themselves together. That’s one message I take away from the game.

On the videos. In one the early parts there was this reference joke where you cut to something else for a second. I liked that, it’s something that I can’t remember having seen before. I also appreciate the readings you did from poems and other stories, it made me more interested in the world around Alice. Now I don’t know if it was on my end only but sometimes I got the feeling that you commented and reacted to things that happened half a second later.

Well, you saw a bit of the inside of the hospital during one of the “sanity effect” moments late in the game, but otherwise, yeah, the Victorian mental health care stuff was more apparent in the first game, with the Insane Children.

The thing I cut to was an episode of the anime Trigun. It’s a blast. :)

Also, this was my second Let’s Play ever, so I might not have perfected synching yet. I think I estimated where my commentary should be, instead of taking the time to really sync the stuff up.

Thanks a lot for your support!

Up until now I’ve been satisfied with Alice: Madness Returns, and I mostly shrugged off the fact that I never got my Mac version of the first game to work. But now I’m seriously considering spending the extra $10 to be able to play the locked copy of this one in Madness Returns. I think it’s more to my liking than the sequel.

Yeah, Madness Returns was a good game, but there was too much open, empty space, and almost no boss fights. I really think the first game is the better game, though the second one is still worth it.

I put them into a playlist, so there’s only one embedded video. Load the embedded video, and you should be able to highlight the bottom of it, and click the center part (between the arrows) for a complete list of installments.

Great! I didn’t get to see this when you made it because i didn’t start watching until Deus Ex, so i finally get to see it now!

By the way, are you still playing Dead Space 2? I noticed you haven’t posted any more parts on Blistered Ones for a while now…

I am indeed still playing Dead Space 2, but I’m wondering whether it’s cool to continue posting in my regular channels, or if that would be presumptuous of me. I’ll see what Holly says about it.

Well it would be best to finish posting Dead Space 2 at the usual places, at least. Otherwise you’ll just leave people hanging in the middle of the game. Then after that just stick to Blistered Thumbs.

Yeah, that definitely crossed my mind. I might just finish up DS2 normally, then.

I still post at my site, as well as everywhere I posted before. (Save for one place, but that’s because I wasn’t really getting posted there anyway.)

I’m sure you’re not going to have issue. Technically everyone who posts at Blip is doing the same thing.
