Square Enix has a lot going on with their headline franchise. First of all, as previously reported, something is going on with Final Fantasy XIII. After hints from the game’s director and some quotes in Japanese magazines, we have finally got some official word about the future of what the company is calling “The Lightning Saga.” Unfortunately, that word is “We have news.”
As you can see from the header image, a teaser site has gone live explaining that a big announcement will be coming on September 1st, 2012. The reveal will certainly deal with Final Fantasy XIII and its main character, Lightning, but we don’t know much beyond that. The smart money is on XIII-3, but it could always be a spin-off or even a film.
In other news, Final Fantasy Dimensions, the retro mobile game, has an official release date of August 31st, 2012. The title plays just like the old 8 and 16-bit RPGs that we all so fondly remember, as you may have seen in our hands-on preview. Dimensions will be compatible with Android devices, iPhone, iPod Touch, and iPad.
Last, but not least, there is a strange rumor going around the internet about Final Fantasy XIV. The embattled MMO will be relaunching in the near future, but that apparently isn’t enough for Square. A NeoGAF thread started by a purported Gamestop employee alleges that the publisher is ordering retailers to destroy all physical copies of the old game. The memo in question states that “a field destroy credit of $16.00 each” will be paid to stores that comply.
That’s quite a bit of news for gaming’s premiere name in RPGs, so take a minute to digest all of it before letting us know your thoughts in the comments below.

IMHO, the best strategy for FF XIV is “Try again next time” not “Use more Phoenix Downs! You can’t die! We need you! You have to LIVE!” It’s like repairing the Titanic’s hull as it’s sinking. Abandon ship and build another one.
About FFXIV,
i played XI for about 5 years strait and atm its an on and off again play for me, but i really can’t get into XIV… .
I resubbed XIV about 3 weeks ago to see what has changed since the last time i played it (wich was last year when they had a summer event).
and i just can’t get into the combat/job system, i do like the crafting and i do see alot off changes so far, such as the UI that is somewhat better now and the combat is faster too, but still from what i have seen SE is kinda gonna destroy the 2 fav. jobs i loved in XI (mainly SMN wich if i got it right has been said to have some main summon skills but then you’ll have summons like ifrit and garuda who only 1 person on your server will be able to own for some time… only to be released again and be left for your server to have a fight over who’s fast enough to get them again).
Ofcourse we’ll have to wait for 2.0 to be sure how it’ll end :/ but i can’t see SE saving the game no more since it is too late by now, and i’ll prob play the first month after 2.0 just to be sure, but to be fair and like i said i re-subbed 3 weeks ago and after 5 days i kinda already had it with that game again… .
It is a promising game, but not something that should be charged monthly to play for cause it feels somewhat too empty for that.
(sorry for wall of text).
Still waiting on vsXIII…
And I’d actually prefer the Lightning Saga to be a movie or straight up action game a-la Kingdom Hearts.
XIII-3? Used and unsold/new copies will be bargain-bin fodder within two months of release. Why would you *not* get it?
I liked XIII-2. It was basically a remake of VIII’s plot, if you think about it, and Lightning and Caius are very… “Shakespeared,” but it was still a pretty good game, and definitely earned the Final Fantasy name in ways XIII did not.
Still, I’d rather hear XIII Versus is being ported to 360. I’d rather be convinced to preorder than buy a used game any day of the week.
How cute. They still think people actually like their game.
If anyone has been following their newsletters, they’d know FF14 is due for a v2.0 release soon. They’re obviously relaunching the game. Still no word on the PS3 release though, so I think they may be jumping the gun once again.
Honestly, if SE were going to try and look humane by asking retailers to destroy copies of FF14 they would have done it a month or so after launch. That ship has long sailed.
All those hours monster collecting are about to go to the trash can
As one of the three people in the world who -liked- both XIII and XIII-2, I’m looking forward to whatever they announce. But then, I am a perfect example of a Final Fantasy fanboy, so my opinion doesn’t really mean anything. XD
I wish they hadn’t gone into the MMO market, though. That seems to be a bad move financially for almost everybody, and I don’t think the relaunch of XIV is going to do much for them.
Aside from XIV (as of yet Dragon Quest X has no continuing subscription numbers out), FFXI have brought them more money than anything. XIV was just poorly made. That and the extreme scrutiny that has been placed on the series.
“The smart money is on XIII-3, but it could always be a spin-off or even a film.”
a two hour film written and directed by Motomu Toriyama? Please square, don’t let that happen.
I want FF dimensions on a handheld or a console, not some stupid phone or a stupid pad. Stupid stupid stupid!
Square enix needs to just understand that graphics isn’t everything to make a good RPG like they used to. I don’t want a movie in my game. Or is that a game in my movie?
Well, to be honest, Square has been on the ‘graphics train’ since FF6.
Yes, I know it’s hard to believe, but FF7 actually looked really good back in the day.
I also don’t think lengthy cutscenes are the problem either. I always thought of those (and nowadays even dialogue if its in a well written story driven game and doesn’t drag too much) as some kind of ‘reward’. Though that might be just a statement of the time I grew up in, where cutscenes and thus character developement where relatively rare.
Of course the gameplay is most important though, and that’s certainly a part where FFXIII lacked. Pushing ‘x’ over and over sufficed for most non-boss battles, and the few battles that required doing things manually and switching paradigms often felt kinda off.
Though I totally agree that FF Dimensions is wasted on phones. Give us a least a version on the Nintendo E-Shop and the PSN-Store or something.
Still need to get through XIII-2 and get the DLC to prepare for XIII-3, but just make it a trilogy of games and then move on.
I would have just said “Android and iOS”, but whatever. I might get it once I get an iPhone.
It’s really a testament to how much Square Enix is ashamed of XIV if they’re asking retailer to outright destroy it, although to me it just seems like they’re trying to make XIV into more of a money sink than it already was. Is this like what happened with the E.T. game, only the game is being destroyed rather than dumped in a landfill?
