I’ve never had much faith in last year’s reveal of Command and Conquer Generals 2, and this next set of news doesn’t do anything to brighten my spirits of the Real Time Strategy franchise that basically raised me growing up as a PC gamer. Bioware Victory’s premier title, a game announced at last year’s SPIKE Video Game Awards, is now turning into Command & Conquer, a new free to play “universe” of the series brought to you by Electronic Arts.
One unknown but not unforeseen development of the game is that the new RTS will be using the Frostbite 2 Engine, as most AAA titles under EA’s belt seem to be adopting rather quickly. C&C will offer all the materials that were going to be in Generals 2, as well as being the frontline of providing other universes like the 1950′s parallel universe of Red Alert and the futuristic warfare between the GDI and NOD (and maybe even the Scrin) of the Tiberium franchise. Command and Conquer looks poised for closed beta, and hopefuls can sign up at their website. What I’m a little bit concerned with is the fact that the new C&C will be an online multiplayer affair only. While some will jeer at the campy acting, the single player experiences of most of the games in the Command and Conquer franchise were phenomenal and it really wrings me the wrong way.

The way that the game was announced last year suggested we would get a full fledged sequel to C&C:Generals which (we assumed at the time) would have a extensive campaign with 3,perhaps 4 factions, skirmish as per default and a return of the “Generals” mode which made Zero Hour a lot of fun,all that with a decent multiplayer component.
Now i guess due to the failure of Knights of the Old Republic at retail and other losses EA are cutting back and scaled the game WAYYY down to just Multiplayer ..which the “possibility” of additional single player content if demand warrants it (read the FAQ).Not good enough EA,sorry.
Well I think it LOOKS good like most Frostbite 2 games. And that’s about it.
No singleplayer missions?
No (solo) skirmish vs AI?
No deal.
IF there is coop vs AI then it MAY be something to think about. But it will still feel like only half a game.
I don’t even want to think about what EA will bring to the “real money” shop or “premium accounts” to fund this.
Worked for the Mass Effect Multiplayer, the real money shop. That is why they were able to release 3 DLC’s for that already, its a self-funded economy.
And it’s also optional. Of course, we don’t know enough details yet to say if the game will have anything missing, but we shall see when release comes closer.
HAHAHA Oh EA you always know how to make me laugh.
seriously though, seeying how EA likes to milk their prices on custom stuff (like that one virtual car for 100bucks, or hell hearing my niece on the sims 3 store)
no thanks.
To bad though i mean i was looking forward to this and simcity, but my entousiasm is fastly dieying out.
Fuck. Fuck you EA.
I was really excited when i heard that BioWare, freaking BioWare, was making the next Command & Conquer. And they actually also said tht the game would feature compelling storytelling.. Meh
I don’t like what EA is turning BioWare into. BioWare used to stand for great and compelling stories, not so much anymore i guess.. Now they are more a “This and That” company. meh. screw you EA. BioWare was my favorite company
Bioware Victory? Has EA turn every studio they own in to a Bioware something?
No westwood, no mytic?
Mythic was turned into BioWare Mythic, as it was floundering on it’s own after the release of Warhammer Online. It’s now working on Star Wars: The Old Republic.
Victory was a new studio that was created just for BioWare, out of EA Victory, to work on new titles. Westwood hasn’t existed in a while, since EA bought them out, the staff walked out on them, and they had to put in a skeleton crew to finish I believe it was Tiberian Sun. It also didn’t help that their CEO at the time at EA was a complete prick, so that hurt them as well.
They got dissolved in 2003.
To sum my thoughts on this whole matter up quite nicely: BETRAYAL!
Ok, it might be an overreaction, but after waiting for Generals 2, having that announced with a ‘epic storyline’, and then to see them take it and scrap into this online only thing….it really really hurts. C&C story missions are almost always the highlights in the games, so I sincerely hope that they manage to put it in somehow. And before anyone says that I shouldn’t complain because it’s now F2P and I won’t have to pay 60 bucks for it, just shut up.
Got signed up for the beta, let’s just hope that what’s there is good.
Disappointed it’s not gonna be a full title like the original, thinking that maybe it would be a good time to hop back into the series after staying away from it, but now I’m less certain. I guess if anything, for being a F2P title, it LOOKS really nice, running with that sweet Frostbite 2 engine, but the F2P games are kinda starting to wear on me abit.
