Leon, you have now become my favorite contributer to this podcast just for defending FFX. I am so damn sick of everyone bashing it with next-to-zero positivity. I’m not a fanboy, I can recognize its flaws, but I’m so freaking sick of people acting like there’s nothing positive.

On graphics in horror games, I will just say: I find Silent Hill 1 far scarier as is for the state of its graphics, considering the state of the town itself. While I do like the other classics, I think that a downgrade in graphical quality in at least a few installments would actually be an improvement.

Hmm, “re-” subtitles…do Red vs. Blue seasons count for games? Season 6: Reconstruction; Season 7: Recreation; Season 8: Revelation; Seasons 6-8: Recollection; a miniseries in between 6 & 7: Relocated.

Thank you Leon for defending FFX, its a great game with good gameplay and has a great story and character, yes after reflecting the story has quite a few holes, flaws and inconsistencies, but I don’t think that most people see these the first time around and would be able to go through the game very immersed in the story. The characters are good, Tidus is yes a bit annoying and cocky; and is selfish up till the end, but I had a lot to relate to him with, I may not have any interest in most sports(though I might if Blitzball was real) or uncomfortably extroverted, but we share some traits, as much I hate to admit it(and so does Tidus) we do cry, probably more then we should, and we both feel out of place in the groups were in.

Yuna was done really well, and Auron is just awesome and one of the best characters ever. The other character all really good, except Wakka, I don’t hate him, but certain things about him bug me, like he is an overly religious zealot and is racist because of it, though games have rarely dealt wit that kind of character before to my knowledge, and I can’t say they handled it badly.

And Rikku is hot, who cares if she’s 15, she’s not real, the creators can make a character that clearly looks like an adult be a child and vise versa, age is truly just a number when it comes to fictional characters.

One thing I noticed Leon is that you didn’t talk about Lulu at all during your run down of the characters, what do you think of her? Personally she’s also done well, and has a distinct character growth over the course of the story, probably more then anyone else.

As for games that made me cry, I can’t say I seriously have, which is surprising cause I get heavily invested in the world and characters of a game, and do get really sad when a major characters dies, like I feel empty, but can’t really cry for some reason, I did however cry at FFIV on the DS, yeah 4, not 6, or 7, or even 10, 4. [spoilers] When Yang dies I started realizing that almost everyone that joins you dies, and it didn’t help that Cid dies almost immediately after. Its pretty saddening that everyone keeps dying, but then all but one of the characters that died, turn out to be alive anyways, some with the most contrived reasons, like being saved by faeries in Yang’s case.

Wow that was longer then I expected.

I don’t know if books would apply to what the 2k guy was talking about: you can imagine characters in a book to be realistic, while in a video game, they’re already made for you. I still agree that what he said is complete BS though.

    *SPOILER ALERT*

There are a handful of games I recall making me cry, but the one I recall most vividly is Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door.

No seriously, seeing Admiral Bobberty read a letter written by his deceased wife that had been lost to him for so many years was one of the greatest happy-sad moments in video game history. I was still able to hold the tears back at that point, but they all came rushing out when it appeared that Bobberty was on the verge of death later in the chapter only for the game to jokingly reveal he just fell asleep a few moments later. I was laughing, crying and angrily shouting, “FUCK YOU GAME, THAT MADE ME CRY” when it happened. I didn’t even know I was capable of exhuming that many different emotions at once.

And all of this I point out was done using characters that are quite literally cardboard cutouts. “Photo-realism is needed to produce deep emotion” my ass!

I didn’t know that. I’ll have to amend my historical data of myself *gets out the eraser and pens*
Done. Though, suddenly I find myself in a dire situation against East Asia as a side effect.

May be off topic, but I’m wondering if any of you have played any of the Ys games; it seems like they could appeal to you.

Ys is definitely in my backlog. I plan on picking up Origin and The Oath in Felghana eventually.

I’d also recommend them – played through Origin (little more then halfway through it on nightmare now – fk. It’s hard) and playing through The Oath in Felghana. If you don’t mind a challenge, they fit into a nice little action niche.
