This technology has already justified its existence.

You remember Agni’s Philosophy, right? The tech demo was an impressive showcase for Square Enix’s Luminous Engine, upon which Final Fantasy is presumably going to be built upon in the future. Well, SE brought it to computer graphics conference SIGGRAPH to show it off again, only this time they came prepared to show off more than its raw power.

Watch as Square Enix Chief Technology Officer Yoshihisa Hashimoto puts his years of expertise to the test by playing with a digital beard:

Then take some time to marvel at the droplets of meat that form together to make a giant dragon:

We probably won’t see the Luminous Engine in a retail game for some time, but it’s still amazing to see it in action like this. I fully expect to see Square debut the landmark beard simulator of our time during the next console generation.

Gameplay > Graphics, Square-enix…unless you’re planning to go into Hollywood and bitchslap Dreamworks and Pixar in the CG Movie department…stop this shit.

No one is gona give a damn if your game looks sexy but performs like a leprosy ridden whore in the gameplay and FUN department.

Also, your bullshit with TWEWY recently for iOS can burn in hell..the deepest pits of gaming hell.

Honestly, if this is the shit they can make I’d rather they stop making games (since most of them aren’t very good anymore) and just focus on this shit! Let the developers who can make awesome games get their hands on this baby.

Agreed. I see this engine as wasted potential. It’s Square-Enix making this engine. Would they ever allow another better developer under them to get a hold of it, like Eidos, Crystal Dynamics, or Rocksteady? HELL NO. They didn’t share their Crystal Tools engine (although admittedly that was just a souped-up Unreal Engine 3), so why would they bother giving their engine to great developers who could use the potential for something like a Deus Ex 4, or a mind-blowing original IP?

This engine looks amazing, I’m not gonna lie. However, I never doubted they could make things pretty, I doubted (and still do) that they can make games that feel more interactive than a movie where every hour or so you get to touch a controller. …And that they could make good business decisions as a developer.

Hey how bout you stop focusing on making Final Fantasy pretty and start trying to make them good again. Though the Bushido Blade idea is certainly enticing :)
