THE PAIN…THE PAIN.

Well, while it is one of the most troubled movies in recent years, the adaptation of Max Brooks’ famous novel, World War Z, is likely going to have a video game adaptation. Paramount, who is producing the movie, has filed for trademark in “downloadable electronic game program, electronic game software, and video game cartridges/discs.” Paramount has had a hand in both the Star Trek game, and War of The Worlds (distributed by Namco Bandai).

As a fan of the novel and a skeptic of both the movie and movie-to-video game adaptation, all I can say is… I am a touch pessimistic. Now, while I cradle my signed copy of the book and pretend that I didn’t just type this news, please discuss your thoughts in the comments below.

Gonna call it now, it’ll just be a bland shooter, possibly third person, with a far too short scenario and little other content.

The Subtitle for World War Z says it all: “An Oral History of the Zombie War.” The novel was written as a series of interviews, with an ensemble cast. And there are all of two characters who have a usable plot arc for a game. What made the book charming just CAN’T be converted to film or Video Games. It will definitively be a horrible game.

The irony? A faithful adaptation of The Road could, conceivably, be a good stealth survival-horror game, if it were done carefully and thoughtfully. Could, but probably wouldn’t; adaptations tend to have horrible effort put into them because they have built-in markets.

What if they do something like Goldeneye 007 and decide to go a completely different route with the plot and end up revolutionize games like Rare did back then? Well, no, doubtful.

It is possible that they let the game plot be closer to the book and actually put some effort into it. Although unlikely, we’ll have to wait and see. In either case, I’ll let some poor sod of a critic go through the game before I do. If it sucks zombie balls, I’ll atleast get sadistic pleasure out of seeing some critic getting pissed.

I have low expectations for “(insert media) -> film -> game” adaptations post-Battleship.

I really don’t get (aside from money) why they would make World War Z into a movie. The way the novel told isn’t really told in a tradition narrative style. It more or less a collection of stories from many different characters about a fictional major world wide event over a 20 year period, which is a rather huge scope. A miniseries adaptation of the book seems like a better approach.

As far as a game adaptation, I would be interested as to see what they would do with it. I would imagine it something like DayZ, except they are slow slumdering zombies can only be killed with headshots. But again, there a plenty of zombie games to play from, I’m not sure how it would really stand out. And it definitely doesn’t help it’s being made for the movie.

I know I love zombie games, but this is taking a zombie game and mixing it with a movie license…ehhhhh…This probably won’t be good.
