One of the many who can’t wait to get your hands on the latest expansion to World of Warcraft? Well if you’re one of the 10 million+ players you’ve just a little longer to wait, as this morning Blizzard finally announced the release date for their long-tested and much anticipated Mists of Pandaria expansion, September 25th of this year. They’ve even started the inevitable pre-sale and download of the expansion… but with no word on a Collector’s Edition yet, I am a bit hesitant.
With a laundry list of new features and additives to the game, this expansion promises a land to explore that is unlike any in World of Warcraft’s history. Focusing primarily on the mist-obscured Isle of Pandaria and it’s native peoples (more than simply just Pandaren). With a new class and race added to the game’s heavy roster (The Monk and Pandaren respectively) and the opening of many new class combinations that previously were impossible, not only is the game tempting for those wanting to experience the new content of the expansion, but others that perhaps might have skipped the last.
Speaking as someone who was on hand for the expansion’s announcement at Blizzcon 2011, I had been at one time worried about the reception this expansion might bring. Certainly there has been a resounding call of “Lol Pandas” and endless references to Jack Black’s famous Po character in the Kung Fu Panda movies, but by and large the majority of responses I see from existing players is positive. But I would remind everyone of Chris Metzen’s words at that very same Blizzcon… “This expansion, this land you’re about to adventure through… is the calm before a great storm (of war)…”
The closed beta of the expansion has been running for months working out an immense list of bugs… but even I know there’s still going to be bugs that ship to live, but in the end this will likely do little to distract players from the immense list of content available this go around. I for one look forward to the Pet Battle System, as I’ve got a team of eccentric murloc warriors from every Blizzcon who are thirsty for the blood of my enemies! Will you be bringing your team of 3 pets to battle, Pokemon style? Perhaps the new raids are to your liking? Or are you going to be the first on your realm with a max level Pandaren Monk?

You know they did have Mists of Pandaria Collector’s edition info out when you posted this article. Then again, I guess you would have to do more than a quick, single story in a week to know that.
Panderans = cool enough
Pet battle = Do you luv my Pokemanz
New Talents = I hope I get used to only have SIX!!!! options wtf blizzard.
Setup to PVP game = SUCK MY DICK I HATE PVP /RAGEQUIT
my thoughts do with them as you wish.
I’m just not sold on the new expansion on the trailer alone. MMO needs both good content and good features. I’m not interested in any of the 3 new features and trailer does nothing to build up new content.
I’m sorry it’s just not a good trailer – it doesen’t really do it’s job unless all you are interested in are the pandaren.
The trailer is lack luster (This came out before the expansion was even 1/4 of the way done), but from what I’ve played of the beta this is shaping up to be one of the better expansions for WoW, the dungeons are interesting, the raids are fun and challenging, the new BGs are rather fun, and the new areas are really nice, not much that I can find to complain about honestly
“…but by and large the majority of responses I see from existing players is positive.”
The dedicated WoW player-base is unconditionally positive about WoW. Also, water is damp and the sky is blue.
I also like ““This expansion, this land you’re about to adventure through… is the calm before a great storm (of war)…” which to me reads “We just needed something to pump out this year while we thought of something interesting.
Well… when the “Dedicated player base” is 10+ Million…
Though don’t get me wrong, I was there when Metzen said that and “These next few years… the big bad guy, the big nemesis… is us.” or something close to that effect. Even I did go, “Well… that doesn’t seem… hrmm…”
But… then again… the last few expansions people have been screaming for PvP. PvP-this and that. Not a huge fan of it myself (I do ok, OP Death Knight after all), but I worry that this renewed focus on PvP over the next few years might not be the best way to go.
I feel PVP ruins PVE which is what in my opinion an MMO should be. If you want to play PVP there are plenty of shooters I could point you too. MMO’s are about experiencing the world they made and banding together to take down some big ole mean boss. Not nerfing classes so they are more balanced in pvp.
*Angrily stares at 20sec recast on his word of Glory.*
I like that WoW caters to both, saying they “Ruin” one another is a bit much, I like that WoW lets me do Raids AND PvP instead of just being laser-focused on one or the other, yeah I have to deal with nerfs to skills that might not deserve from a PvE standpoint, but I get to enjoy 2 flavors of content.
