It might just be the desperation in the air, or perhaps it’s the honest want to improve things, but BioWare’s Star Wars: The Old Republichas seen an increase in activity lately since the release of free character transfers. Looking at the data, it’s an easy task to see the majority of servers being offered to transfer out-of are the lower population servers. Destination servers are typically newer servers and are limited to 1 server per a dozen or so “departure” servers. According to BioWare, “Hundreds of Thousands of People” have already transferred their characters using the system… but there must still be a few holdouts.
The reason for such a statement can be gleamed from the recent news that BioWare will be offering new incentives for people whose characters are transferred to, or are currently residing on any of the “destination” realms that people can transfer to. A staple of the MMO genre in recent years, an exclusive non-combat mini-pet (The “Gannifari”) is amongst the rewards offered. Now while I’d love to believe that this is all being done out of the kindness of their hearts, the Sith in me grumbles that it’s only being used as a ploy to lure the last few holdouts from their caves on Tatooine. They’re also sweetening the pot with a collection of 25 “Blackhole Commendations”, the current end-game currency which allows players to buy some fairly decent gear.
I am glad that they’re offering these rewards to those who have already taken advantage of character transfers to get to better servers where there’s a great deal more people to play the game with, but I do wonder where it goes from here. I can certainly say that transfers have stemmed the tide of people departing the game from within my own circle of friends, but will that be a constant throughout The Old Republic‘s player base? Only time, and my crossed fingers, will tell.
An eccentric millionaire bent on world domination, or at least trying to find happiness and ponder the existentialism-… oh who are we kidding he's just an evil eccentric who wants to take over the world while having an amazing time playing whatever games strike his fancy. Known amongst the Blizzard community as "The Dreadmist Man".

Music Mondays revisits the band that brought us tunes from Scott Pilgrim vs. the World and Bit.Trip Runner.
I be more happy if my toon on the headstart server, I hade to stop playing becous of the hours+ ques at release, was allow to join the same server as my other toons.
That is why he is still holding out on the old server, hoping to move to a better place.
I remember an article from a few months back citing data that showed the overall sever load to be fairly low so a migration makes sense to cut the upkeep costs in get higher player numbers making the place not so dead.
